Twenty three bloody years of watching my identical twin sister, Katalina Mendoza, living the life that I wanted. The life that I deserved. When she got new designer bags, I got new patches on my worn-out clothes. My mother and I suffered while my father and her lived recklessly.

Then just to make it better, Katalina Mendoza gets engaged to the son of the wealthiest billionaire in Mexico, Nicholas Santiago. His aura is like his name, cold and dangerous, completely out of my league. Well maybe not.

Because when I get a job opportunity, I see a chance to travel to the city, fate brings me to my fathers mansion and the revenge tastes sweet, time to take everything I’ve ever been denied.

Just one sleeping drug, one unconscious body, and one accomplice.

And I am Katalina Mendoza, my twin sister. The new bride. And my soon-to-be husband is Nicholas.

Tricking Nicholas seemed to be the easiest part, until it wasn’t.

“You’re different,” he says.

“What do you mean by that?” I ask, panicking.

“I really don’t know, but I like this version better,” he says, moving closer to me.

And that’s when I realized I was in trouble, because falling for my twin sister’s fiancée was not part of my plan.

Then the truth begins to unfold, and I realize, I thought I held the plan, but I was falling into a trap. A bigger plot that was being schemed by someone. Someone who devised the whole thing.

Chapter 1: I wasn’t supposed to be here.
Katerina’s POV: “Wait, is she breathing?” Oh God, I think I killed my twin sister. I quickly check Katalina’s pulse to see if she is alive. My hands shake uncontrollably as I put my two fingers against Katalina's pale neck. A huge relief washes over my face as I feel some weak thuds in her neck, against my fingers. Okay, so what do I do next? I attempt to carry her body, oh God she has weight. Does she eat the gold and diamonds she wears too? I wipe beads of sweat off my face before I continue. I place both hands under each of her shoulder region and drag her to the nearest closet. The closet is bigger than my whole room back at my house with Mama. “Where’s the tape. Oh s**t” I tiptoe to the other side of the room and pick the tape from the floor. I then begin to tape her mouth, this is the riskiest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I can imagine what the news headline will be like; the mysterious and hidden twin of Katalina Mendoza locks up her very own twin sister. I shrug off the thought as I also tie her hands from behind. I take a step back and look at what I have accomplished in this short while. I look at the motionless girl on the floor. She looks like a shadow of me, but in reality, I’m her shadow, her hidden shadow. “She isn’t dead, she’s just unconscious,” I remind myself, like chanting it will make the situation less of a crime. Nineteen years of living under the shadows while she was in the spotlight. She lived in a mansion, while mama and I lived in an old two-bedroom apartment. She spent thousands on designer bags while I starved for two days with no interruptions. The scent of her shattered perfume lay on the marble floors, the contents of the perfume mixing with the coffee she had just before this whole incident, they were all spilled on the rug. As I am about to shove her into the closet and lock the door. I hear a voice, I adjust everything and go into hiding. After a few minutes, “nobody’s around”, I utter. I continue pushing her into the closet door. Click click. Shit. The door to the room opens and I see him. Philip Mendoza, the man whose face latched the front covers of every Mexican magazine, my father. He is with a tall man in a long black coat in glasses, more like goggles. The both of them see me and they stand still, in shock. Philips eyes dart from my still body crouching beside Katalina, then the tape in my hands then to the spilled tea-cup sprawled in the floor. He takes a step inside the room. I see him in a clearer light now, he is even more intimidating in person. Shit s**t s**t. I brace myself for everything that is about to happen, the screams, the security guards busting into the room, but for now, I plead. “Please it’s not what it looks like” I say pleading. “Oh it is exactly what it looks like” says Philip, with a smirk. He gives the tall man a look and he bolts across the room to me, gripping both of my hands behind my back. I start to hyperventilate. “It was just for one night” I say tears already clouding my vision, “I just wanted to be her for one night” I look at Philip, “you never had the decency to even send mama and I some money, after you chased us out of the house” I say with blood boiling in my veins. “You are cruel” He looks me up and down like I am some filthy rag, “your mother was the one that ran away with you, I had no use for her again, so why would I come looking for you” When he says this, I feel like my gut has been punched. I’m gasping for air. My mother worked a twelve hours shift, her hands nearly dislocated from the heavy machines she carries. Her chest heaves with every breath she takes due to her heart condition. I remain calm and I actually take in the scene before me. The tall man drops the sack he held on the floor, and I see the flash of a knife inside. The tall man sees my area of focus, “If you don’t cooperate, that knife you see over there will slit your throat” I shudder, something tells me that he isn’t joking. But why was he bringing a knife to his bosses daughter's room? Only if… wait no, my head settles as I realize these two might not be so innocent either, they were about to do something as bad, but I beat them to it. I keep this observation to myself. Philip, my father and the tall man share a look, then my hands are released, what’s going on? “Go take a shower” he demands clearly seeing how I look. “And when you’re done, wear this dress” I blink. Confused. He goes to the massive closet and handpicks a green emerald dress. “The stylists will be with you shortly” He walks to me slowly, his shoes shattering the broken glass in the floor even more. He lifts my face up from my chin. “Remarkable” he says in awe, you look exactly like Katalina, he says this without any emotion in his voice. I’m beginning to think he is psychotic.”You will do”. He turns to the man. I soon learn his name is Dr. Vance. “Make sure everything is ready, ensure she is sedated and unconscious throughout the trip” he says calmly. “The transport van is already here” My breath catches in my throat, “what, what are you guys talking about?” I ask. This man was the devil himself. He looks back at me and uses his right hands to grip my throat. “You still have the audacity to be asking questions?” He says. “If I was you, I would shut up and do as I’m told” I keep quiet. Mama warned me. “You think I didn’t know this would happen? You think I don’t keep tabs on your movements? You think I didn’t know when you applied for a job around here” he asks. I stare at him, disgusted that I share the same blood with this man. “Like hell I’m doing this” i say as i slap his hands away from my throat. He is shocked. This makes him to squeeze my throat harder. “You don’t have a choice , you will do this” he says determined. I start to tap his hands, my breaths are coming short as his squeezes begin to affect me. He lets go of me, as he adjusts his tuxedo. “You wanted her life? You will play her part to absolute perfection. Because if you mess up tonight’s event, you are dead” he says. I’m scared. “I will tell them that you hit your head against something, so for now, you have a slight memory loss” he says. “Play. The. Part.” Dr. Vance starts to haul Katalina's body over his shoulders. “She was planning to run away anyways, so we just made her plan easier for her” says Philip, “with a few altercations of course” Sick bastard. “Be ready in 20 minutes” he says as he leaves my room with the Doctor. Now I understand why they call him Doctor…he loves to get his hands dirty. 20 minutes later, “You look breathtakingly beautiful Katalina” exclaimed one of the stylists. “Thank you so much” I say smiling, I notice the shock on their faces at my sweet reply. Katalina couldn’t have been that bad. “You seem to be in a good mood tonight, Miss Katalina” one of the stylist says, the other gives her a deadly look and matches her feet so hard, she yelps Knock knock. Philip steps in, he reeks of power. “Katalina, you ready? Nicholas is downstairs waiting for you” he says, like he wasn’t straight up choking me a few minutes ago. I sigh and take a last look at myself in the mirror. The reflection in front of me was a stranger. I exit the room, and head down the marble stairs. Standing at the bottom of the stairs was him, Nicholas Santiago. The tabloids weren’t exaggerating. He was breathtakingly lethal. Sharp in the right places, not a single streak of light in his hair. This was finally it. I begin walking down the stairs, with every step I took, I suppressed a piece of my real self. Nicholas and I look at ourselves as I walk down stairs, the way he looks at me makes me feel so bare. Does he know? I am no longer Katerina Mendoza, but the heiress to a Real Estate Empire, engaged to Nicholas Santiago, the son of the richest entrepreneur in Mexico City. I am now Katalina Mendoza, I am my twin sister. We are one.
