Chapter 2

2059 Words
Damon’s Point of View I lift my hand ordering one more whiskey. The bartender nods his head without a word before sliding it towards me. I nod my head in thanks before picking up my glass and taking a slow sip. I have been on edge all day, my wolf clawing at me to get out and I don't know why. I thought a drink might help with the unease but this is my fifth glass and so far it isn't doing anything. The unease is still there, coiled tightly in my chest. I down the rest off my glass and set it down, before I push back from the bar. I should leave. I am about to stand when a scent hits me. A scent that makes my mouth water, and my wolf snarling in my head. My breath cathes in my throat. No... It can't be... Mate. My wolf growls in my head, irritated that I am even questioning it. I try to stand, to put distance between me and whatever cruel joke the universe is playing, but my body refuses. My wolf digs his claws in, demanding that I stay. My eyes begin scanning the bar, trying to find her. The scent keeps getting stronger, and stronger until suddenly the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen pushes through the crowd. I frown when I realize that she is human. Really? Of all the possibilities, this is what fate decided? Why would she mate me with a human? She weaves through the crowd and sits on the empty stool beside me, accidentally knocking her arm into mine. Sparks explode up my arm like I’ve been struck by lightning. I suck in a sharp breath. "Oh, I am so sorry." She says quickly, turning to me with a smile that would have made my knees buckle if I wasn't sitting down already. I swallow hard before shaking my head. "No worries, but if you really feel bad you can always make it up by having a drink with me." I say, giving her a charming smile and she laughs softly. The sounds makes me pulse and I shift uncomfortably in my chair. “Are you always this bold?” She asks, her eyes roaming over me. “Only when it pays off.” I say, grinning at her and she arches a brow. “And you think this will?” She asks and I nod my head. “I’m hopeful.” She considers me for a moment, then she nods her head. “Alright. One drink, but if I regret this, I am blaming you.” She says and I laugh. “I can live with that.” She smiles at me before ordering two drinks. We clink our glasses together as soon as the bartender hands them to us, and the moment our fingers brush again, sparks flare, through me again, and this time, I think she feels something to because her eyes widen slightly and she pulls her hand away. “Okay... That was… weird.” She murmurs and I shrug. “Must be static.” I say and she squints at me. “Sure.” She murmurs before taking a drink. After that conversation between us comes easily, too easily. We don’t exchange names. Somehow, it never comes up. It feels unnecessary, like names would anchor this moment to reality, and neither one of us wants that yet. She teases me about my “broody bar vibe.” I tell her she has a dangerous laugh. She says I look like trouble. I don’t argue. Each time she touches my arm, my wolf surges. Each laugh, each smile pulls me deeper. I keep telling myself that I need to leave, that this can never work. She’s human. I’m not. But my wolf doesn’t care. He wants her close. Wants to touch her. Wants more. At some point her friend that came in with her excuses herself to the bathroom. “She’ll be a while. I think she is calling her boyfriend. Again." She says smiling at me. Something warm curls in my chest at the way she says it, fond and amused. Another drink appears between us that I don’t remember ordering it. “So that means that I am stuck with you.” I say lightly. “Oh no. Whatever will you do.” She says. “Survive.Barely.” I say teasingly and I watch her mouth curve into a smile. She lifts her glass again. “To survival, then.” “To survival." I agree nodding my head. “So...” She says, turning slightly towards me, her knee brushing mine. “What is your deal?” She asks and I arch a brow. “My deal?” I ask and she nods her head. “Yeah. You have been dodging every question I have asked about you.” She says and I arch my brow again. “Am I?” I ask and she nods. “Yes. Every time I ask about you, you redirect.” “Maybe I’m mysterious.” I say and she scoffs. “Or hiding.” “Or selective.” She studies me again, slower this time. “Selective about what?” “Who gets to know me.” "I guess that's fair." She murmurs and I grin at her again. “Or maybe I just like listening to you.” I say teasingly and she rolls her eyes playfully. "No, seriously." She says and I grin. "Maybe we should have a few more drinks before I tell you all of my dark secrets." I say and she laughs. “Careful...” She says, lifting her glass. “You buy me too many drinks and I might start thinking that you are trying to get me drunk.” She says teasingly and I snort. “Trust me, you are doing just fine on your own.” I say and her eyes narrow at me playfully. “Wow. Charming and rude.” “Hey, you laughed.” I point out. “Against my better judgment..So whose fault is that?” She asks and I grin at her again. “Mine. I have that effect.” I say easily. She tilts her head slightly, studying me in a way that makes my heart rate pick up. “Are you always this confident, or is this a special occasion?" “Only when I’m right.” She hums, taking a slow sip of her drink, her eyes never leaving mine. “About?” “About you not walking away anytime soon.” I say and her lips twitch slightly. “Is that so?” She asks and I lean in close. “You’re still here, aren’t you?” She laughs quietly again. “Unfortunately.” “Unfortunately?” I ask, arching a brow. “For my common sense...Very unfortunately.” “Then I’ll try to behave. For your common sense.” “Liar.” I grin at her. “Probably.” She shifts on her stool, her knee brushing mine again, and sparks snap through me, sharp and addictive. I inhale slowly, forcing my shoulders to relax. “So, will you at least tell me what brings you here tonight?” She asks and I shrug. "Just some business in town." I say and she slowly nods. "What about you?" “Bad decisions and thinking tequila might help fight the tears and the confusion." "I don’t see any tears." I say arching a brow and she shrugs. "Guess I am all cried out..." She murmurs. It is quiet for a few seconds and I am just about to speak when she does. “You know... you look like trouble.” She says quietly and my wolf growls approvingly in my head. “So I have been told.” I say quietly. Her gaze flicks to my mouth and I swallow hard, heat pooling low in my stomach. Her friend still isn’t back. I need to leave. The thought comes sharp and urgent. But I don’t move. The music shifts, bass deeper, slower. Her face lights up. “Oh. I love this song.” She says and before I can protest, she slides off her stool and grabs my wrist. “Come dance with me.” She says but I shake my head. “I don’t dance.” “Everyone dances.” “I don’t.” "You do tonight.” “I really don’t.” I repeat. “Please.” That one word, soft and hopeful, snaps the last thread of my resistance. “Fine. One dance.” I mutter, letting her pull me towards the dance floor. It is crowded, with bodies pressed close together, heat everywhere. She turns to face me, her hands resting lightly on my shoulders. She starts to move, hips swaying gently at first. I stand stiff, unsure where to put my hands. “Relax,” she murmurs. “You look like you’re about to run.” “I might.” "Don't. " She says softly and we continue to dance quietly. “See? It is not that bad.” She says after a while and I frown. “I hate it.” I mutter and she laughs. “Liar.” The music changes and instead of letting go she slides closer to me, her arms wrapping around my neck. Her body presses against mine, soft and warm and exactly where my wolf wants her. A low sound slips from my throat before I can stop it. She smiles, but she doesn’t say anything. Then she turns around. Her back pressed to my chest, her ass brushing against me, and I lose whatever control I had left. I groan. She gasps when she feels me react, and she still for a half a second. Then she begins to move again. Slower, every move clearly intentional. My hands grip her hips, my fingers digging in just enough not to hurt her. “Jesus.” I mutter. She tilts her head back, her hair brushing my jaw. “You okay back there?” “Not even a little.” “Good.” She says. The word sends a shudder through me and she laughs softly beforehand she grinds back against me, and my wolf roars his approval. Soon her arousal begins to swirl around us, thick and intoxicating, and my mouth waters. I lean down slightly, my mouth next to her ear. “If you keep this up, I’m not responsible for what happens next.” She laughs breathlessly. “That sounds like a challenge.” She spins back around suddenly, her arms locking around my neck again. Before I can even say anything her mouth slams into mune and she kisses me. Hard. I freeze for half a second, before I begin kissing her back hungrily. She moans, fingers sliding into my hair. The kiss is all heat and hunger, with no hesitation. My hands slide up her back, pulling her closer to me until there is no space left between us. When I finally pull back, we are both breathing hard. When I look down at hee, her cheeks are flushed, her lips swollen. “Wow...” She whispers. “Yeah...” I agree hoarsely. The rational part of me screams that this is wrong. She is human. This will only end badly. But when she looks at me like that, I don’t care. “I...” She hesitates for a second before taking a deep breath. “Do you want to get out of here?” She asks and I stare at her. Her expression begins to falters when my silence stretches a second too long. “I’m sorry. Forget it. I just...” I grab her face and kiss her again, slower this time. When I pull back, my voice is rough. “My motel is right down the street.” She swallows hard, nodding her head. “Good. Let’s go.” She says. I take her hand, the sparks flaring between us again, and I lead her out of the bar. If this was my only chance if being with her, I wanted more, way f*****g more. It's just one night. One night won’t change anything. I just need to be with her for one night and then I can forget about her.
