Chapter 1
Ava's Point of View
"Hey baby. What's wrong?"
I smile as Adam's voice comes over the phone.
"Hi there. Oh no, nothing is wrong, I just wanted to see if you have settled in okay. How is the apartment?"
I ask, leaning back against my car.
"Yeah, I did. My stuff is pretty much set up, and the apartment is great. But it would be better once you and your things get here. Are you sure you can't come earlier?
He asks for the hundredth time and I laugh softly.
"I'm sorry, I told you. I still have to work, but I will be there next week. I promise."
I say and he groans.
"That is 1 week to long."
He numbles and I laugh again, shaking my head.
"Stop. You are being ridiculous. You have basically gone all vacation without me, you can survive one more week without me.
I say teasingly and he sighs dramatically.
Yeah, and it was absolute torture. But I guess I have no other choice but to wait one more week. But just one more, otherwise I am coming to fetch you myself."
He says and I chuckle, glancing at my fully loaded car.
"That won't be necessary. I will see you soon."
"Good..."
He begins. I hear a commotion and he trails off.
"Hold on baby."
He suddenly says and I hear him talking to someone in the background but I can't make out what they are saying.
"I have to go. There is a bonfire tonight for new years and me and some of the others are going over early to take a swim."
His voice suddenly comes back over the phone and I nod my head, even though I know he can't see me.
"Yeah, okay. That sounds fun. Enjoy and be safe. I love you."
"I love you too."
He says quickly before ending the call. I straighten and smile at the gas attendant, that filled up my car.
"All done?"
I ask as he closes the tank and he nods his head, wiping his hands before grabbing a card machine.
"Yes mam. All filled up and ready to go."
He says and I smile at him
"Thank you."
I say before quickly tapping my card on the machine he holds out to me.
I thank him again before sliding back into my car.
I glance at the time, 17:30. Two more hours then I will be at the apartment to surprise Adam. I smile, quickly starting my engine and pulling back onto the road.
I managed to get off of my shift earlier at the hospital and they allowed me to leave a week earlier than planned. Adam and I have been dating since the beginning of high school and we are both busy with our last year of medschool. We decided to get an apartment together close to the university and the hospital, but because I was still working he came here earlier to get the apartment ready. I can't wait to surprise him.
As I get closer I try to call Adam but his phone keeps going to voicemail.
I bite my lip, contemplating whether to head over to the apartment first or to where I know the bonfire is. I glance at the time and decide to head over to the bonfire instead since it is still early and that is where he is most likely to be.
I try to call him again as I pull up but there is still no answer.
Frustrated I get out of the car and make my way over to where I hear the music.
Along the way people I know greet me, but no one seems to know where Adam is when I ask.
I finally manage to find my best friend, Spencer with a group of our friends.
"Hey guys!"
I call out with a big smile, waving at them and greetings are shouted at me from different directions.
Spencer squeals as soon as she spots me before barreling into me, hugging me tightly. I laugh and hug her back.
"You're here!! How? I thought you were only coming next week? Why didn’t you let me know?"
She asks, pulling away slightly and I smile at her.
"Yeah, sorry. I manage to get off early and I wanted to surprise Adam."
I say and my smile slips away as I frown, looking around us.
"Speaking off, have you seen him? I haven't been able to track him down and he isn't answering his phone"
I ask. She frowns and looks around us.
"I swear he was here not long ago, but maybe he went home early."
She murmurs her eyes still scanning the crowd, looking for him.
I sigh and nod my head.
"Yeah maybe..."
I murmur, taking one last look around before I sigh, and run a hand through my hair.
"Okay, well then I guess I will head over to the apartment. I'll see you tomorrow?"
I ask but she shakes her head.
"Nope, I am coming with you."
She says.
"No, don't be silly. Stay, have some fun. You don't have..."
I begin, shaking my head but she cuts me off.
"I know I don’t have to come with you. I want to. And there is no use in arguing with me because I am coming with you whether you want me to or not."
She says firmly and I laugh, nodding my head.
"Fine, I guess lets go then."
I say and she nods her head as she links her arm with mine.
We quickly wave goodbye to the others, promising to see them the next day before we make our way to my car.
"So, where is Liam?"
I ask and she sighs before looking at me.
"He isn't here yet. He is coming tomorrow."
She says, pouting a little and I chuckle.
We quickly slip into my car when we reach it and begin making our way to the apartment.
My brows pull together when I see Adam's car in the parking lot. I stop next to him and decide to call him again but it still goes straight to voicemail.
"That's weird."
Spencer murmurs and I slowly nod my head.
"Yeah... It is."
I whisper and unease suddenly settles into my stomach, coiling tightly.
Something is wrong.
Spencer and I both get out of my car quickly, making our way up the stairs.
The door isn't locked when I try it and we share a look before I slowly push open the door. But before I can even call out to him, a noise coming from the bedroom reaches us and I feel my entire body go cold.
My feet begin to move in the direction of our bedroom but Spencer grabs my arm.
"Ava, don't. You don't have to..."
She begins but I shake my head, cutting her off.
"Yes, I do. I have to see this."
I say, my throat tight with emotion. She looks worried but she just nods her head and she grabs my hand, squeezing it gently.
I don't respond I just continue to make my way down the hall slowly, the noises getting louder the closer we get to the master bedroom and bile rises in my throat.
We stop in front of the door and I reach out to open it but I hesitate, my hand hovering over the handle.
"We can go. You don't have to see it."
Spencer says quietly but I shake my head.
"No... I have too."
I repeat. I take a deep breath before grabbing the handle and opening the door.
The scene in front of me makes my stomach turn.
Adam is so busy pounding into the girl on the bed he doesn't even notice us and I can't stop staring at them. Her moaning and his grunting burning into my mind.
Adam throws his head back and at that moment his eyes catches mine.
"Ava..."
He says, shocked.
After that everything happens all at once.
He immediately stops pounding into the girl on the bed, stumbling off of her.
His voice snaps me out of my trans and I immediately spin around, rushing out of the apartment with Spencer right on my heels.
"Ava, wait!"
He calls out to me but I don't stop, I continue to run out of the apartment, down the stairs, to afraid he'll catch up with me in the elevator.
I hear him calling my name again, but I just run faster, straight towards my car but someone grabs my arm just before I can get to it, spinning me around.
My eyes land ond Adam and I immediately begin trying to pull away.
"Let go of me!"
I hiss through my teeth but he shakes his head.
"No, please. You have to listen to me. I can explain."
"I don't think she need you to explain. It was pretty clear what we walked in on."
Spencer says coldly from behind me and he glares at her.
"Shut up. I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to my girlfriend."
He hisses at her, but the distraction was enough for him to loosen his grip and I pull my arm free.
"Don't talk to her like that, and I am definitely not your girlfriend anymore."
I hiss at him again and his eyes snap back to mine.
"Baby, please, just let me explain."
He begins again, but I shake my head, stepping away from him when he tries to reach out to me.
"No... Spencer is right. I don't need an explanation. I know what I saw."
I say. I shake my head, running a hand through my hair and I let out a bitter laugh.
"God, I am so stupid..."
I murmur.
"Here I was, excited to surprise you by coming a week earlier, with all of my things, ready to move in with you, just to find you pounding into someone else, and on what was supposed to be our bed!"
He flinches.
"Ava, I'm sorry, I didn't know you were coming, and I was drunk..."
He tries to explain, but I snort, cutting him off.
"Yeah, right. Just save it, Adam. I am not interested in anything you have to say. We're done."
I turn away from him and he touches my arm.
"Ava..."
I rip my arm away harshly, glaring at him.
"Don't you ever touch me or speak to me again, Adam."
I say before rushing away and getting into my car.
I wait for Spencer to get in and we quickly pull away.
I drive aimlessly for a while, trying to hold back the tears.
"Ava... Pull over..."
Spencer finally breaks the silence in the car, her voice gentle, and I can't hold the tears back anymore.
I slowly pull over and as soon as the car is parked she pulls me closer and the dam breaks.
"Shh... You're okay."
She whispers, hugging me tightly.
"I can't believe he did this... Why would he do this to me..."
I sob against her shoulder and she sighs.
"I don't know. But you deserve better than him."
She says, rubbing my back.
When I am finally cried out, I pull back slightly, wiping my face.
"Do you want me to drive?"
She asks and I slowly nod my head.
We switch seats and I lean my head back against the seat, closing my eyes. For a few seconds I just sit there quietly, wiping the occasional tear as I try to understand what I did to deserve this.
"So where do you want to go?"
She asks and I sigh.
"I don't know..."
I mumble, glancing at her and she nods her head.
"Okay, we can head over to my place..."
She begins but I sit up quickly, shaking my head.
"No, no! I don't want to go anywhere he might look for me."
I say quickly and she sighs.
"Fine... Then where are we going?"
"Someplace we can get drunk."
I say and she looks at me with a frown.
"Ava, I don't..."
She begins but I grab her hand.
"Please, Spence... I just need to forget about everything that happened tonight. Besides it is still New Year's Eve, right? Let's go have some fun."
I say smiling at her but she still stares at me with a frown.
"I really don't think this is the best idea right now."
She says and I shrug.
"Maybe not... But I still think that is what I need right now. I deserve a drink and to get my mind off of him."
I say firmly, though my voice slightly cracks and she sighs.
"Drinking might help you feel better for a while, but all of this will still be here tomorrow. Drinking isn't the answer."
Spencer says and I frown at her.
"No, maybe not, but for tonight it will help me forget and that is good enough for me."
She stares at me for a few more seconds before she sighs, and slowly nods her head.
"Fine... Let's go."
