A Familiar stranger

The office was buzzing with the usual hum of computers and murmured conversations when Samantha caught wind of something that immediately grabbed her attention. Her coworkers were talking in hushed tones, leaning over cubicles, sharing rumors about a high-level transfer to Blake Industries. Their eyes flicking nervously to the lobby every few seconds. “Have you heard?” Maya leaned over from the desk next to Samantha, her eyes wide with curiosity. “They’re bringing in someone from corporate—big news. Top official, apparently.” Samantha raised an eyebrow, her interest piqued. Maya had a tendency to get caught up in office gossip, but this felt different. “From where?” Samantha asked, trying to sound casual, though her heart rate quickened. “Somewhere in the States,” Maya replied, tapping her pen against the desk. “They say he’s coming to work here at the branch. High-ranking, definitely someone important. I heard he’s got connections all over the company.” “That’s insane,” said Chris, a colleague from accounting, leaning in from the other side of the cubicle. He was always up on the latest industry news, and he had an uncanny knack for getting the facts—when he wasn’t busy cracking jokes. “People are talking about this guy like he’s a game-changer.” “Do you think they’ll give him an office here? Or just make him work remotely like everyone else?” Maya’s questioned, turning her attention back to Samantha. Before Samantha could respond, the unmistakable figure of Logan Hale strode into the lobby. His sharp, tailored suit seemed to command the room, and the moment he stepped inside, the atmosphere shifted. All eyes were on him. Samantha froze. Her heart skipped a beat. Logan was still as striking as she remembered. The broad shoulders, dark hair that never seemed to be out of place, and the confidence in his stride—the very presence of him took her back to the days when he had been her everything. He was a man who promised her the world—together forever, he’d said. She had believed him, heart and soul. But all of that had crumbled when he walked away, leaving her for another woman in the company. The betrayal still stung deep in her chest, a scar she wasn’t sure would ever heal. She could still remember the hollow feeling when she’d seen him with his new wife—their chairman’s daughter, no less. The woman who had always been there, just waiting for a chance. And when Logan remarried so quickly after their divorce, Samantha felt like the floor had dropped out from under her. The world she had built with him, the future they’d dreamed about—shattered in an instant. The promises of heaven and earth now felt like lies. Her stomach churned as her eyes locked on him, and she instinctively turned away, pretending to focus on the email in front of her. “Oh wow, Logan Hale…” Maya murmured, her eyes fixed on the dashing figure standing in the lobby. “He still looks… damn good.” Chris, whose usual bravado was replaced by a rare look of admiration, nodded. “Huhn huhn,” Samantha could feel the weight of her friends’ glances on her, the “damn” looks that told her everything she needed to know. They knew. They always knew. Just as Logan made his way deeper into the lobby, he was greeted by Ethan Blake. Ethan Blake—the managing director of this branch. Samantha’s pulse skipped a beat again, but for entirely different reasons. Ethan was another level of handsome, with a quiet intensity that always drew attention when he entered the room. Tall, with striking features that were both rugged and refined, he exuded power. His smile was confident, but there was something sharp in his eyes, an intellect that Samantha had noticed from the very first time they’d met. As the two men exchanged a brief handshake. Logan, with his charisma and experience, and Ethan, the young son of the company’s chairman, who had quickly risen to the top. The air felt thicker now, the room practically holding its breath as the two men interacted. Ethan, a brilliant mind, and the kind of man who had every woman in the office swooning. He could charm just about anyone with a single smile, but it was his mind that made him so dangerous. Every woman had a soft spot for him, and every man respected him. Yet, as much as they were both formidable forces in the company, there was something undeniably electric about the dynamic between them. And with Logan’s sudden presence, it felt like there was an unspoken challenge in the air. As Logan and Ethan made their way further into the office, the murmurs around the room quieted down, and the air shifted once again. Ethan stood confidently at the center of their large office space, with Logan just beside him. “Alright, everyone, listen up!” Ethan’s voice rang out across the office, drawing the attention of the team. “I’d like you all to meet Logan Hale, who will be joining us for the next few months as we tackle the upcoming project. As you know, Logan is a top-ranking member of Blake Industries, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have him here with us.” There was a shift in the room as the team absorbed the weight of Ethan’s words. Everyone knew the significance of Logan’s position. A man like him, a key player in Blake Industries, didn’t just drop into a branch for no reason. “This project we’re working on is classified, so I expect everyone to be on top of their game,” Ethan continued. “Logan will be leading the team on the development of high-tech AI drones for national security. It’s a big deal, and we need to be at our best. I trust you’ll all show him the respect he deserves.” Samantha couldn’t help but watch as Ethan’s eyes briefly swept over the team, pausing for a moment before his gaze landed on her. It was subtle, but it didn’t escape her. He was looking at her, his eyes narrowing with an almost imperceptible nod as if signaling her. “Samantha,” Ethan called, and her heart skipped. “Can you walk Logan to his new office? He’ll need a hand getting settled in.” She blinked, caught off guard by the request. Of all the people Ethan could’ve chosen to show Logan around, he’d called on her. Her name was always the one that came to his mind when something special needed to be done—whether it was handling an important task or just ensuring things went smoothly. And, as much as she tried to ignore it, the others had noticed. Her colleagues had begun to look at her differently, with jealousy simmering beneath the surface. Samantha could feel their eyes on her as she stood up, her palms suddenly clammy. Walk Logan Hale to his office? Her ex-husband. The man who had once promised her forever, who had shattered her world into pieces. The man now walking into the building as if he belonged here, just as much as Ethan did. “Sure,” Samantha managed to say, her voice more composed than she felt. She didn’t dare look at Logan, even though she could feel the weight of his gaze on her. Instead, she walked toward Ethan, who was waiting with a knowing smile, as if this moment had been planned all along. As she reached the door to Logan’s new office area, Samantha hesitated for a moment. She could feel his presence behind her, but she kept her head forward, swallowing the lump in her throat. She didn’t want him to see how much he still affected her. With a final glance at Ethan, who had his gaze fixed on her, Samantha opened the door to Logan’s new office unsure of what she was to do next.
