Awkward encounters

Logan stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the space. The office was scattered and bare—boxes stacked haphazardly in the corner, a thick layer of dust covering the desk. It was far from ready for a man of his stature. Logan frowned. “Looks like I have some work to do,” he muttered, half to himself. Samantha didn’t respond. She stood at the door, fingers gripping the folder in her hands, heart racing in her chest. The silence between them felt like a ticking clock. She had to get out of there before her composure slipped. “If you need anything, just… let someone know,” she said quickly, her voice flat. Before Logan could respond, she turned on her heel and left, making sure to avoid even a fleeting glance at his face. Across the building, Ethan Blake was seated behind his desk, reviewing the upcoming drone project plans when his secretary, David Crane, entered the office with his usual flair. David was notorious for being in the know about everything happening in the office—mostly thanks to his love for gossip. “Ethan, you’ll never guess what I just found out,” David said, sliding into the chair across from Ethan with a conspiratorial grin. Ethan looked up, slightly annoyed at the interruption. “What is it this time, David?” David leaned in, lowering his voice dramatically. “You know the new guy, Logan Hale? The one you asked Samantha to show to his office?” Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Yes? My in-law” “Well,” David paused for effect, “turns out, Samantha is his ex-wife.” Ethan blinked, his hands freezing over the documents in front of him. His mind instantly reeled, the casual order he had given earlier suddenly feeling awkward. He had no idea that there was such a history between Samantha and Logan. His stomach tightened. He wasn’t sure if it was jealousy, concern, or something else entirely. But knowing that he’d unknowingly put her in such a situation…it made him uneasy. David grinned, clearly enjoying the drama. “I know, right? Crazy office dynamics, huh?” Ethan exhaled slowly, not sharing David’s enthusiasm. “Thanks for the heads up, David,” he said, dismissing him with a wave. As the door closed behind his secretary, Ethan leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowing in thought. The office always had its rumors, but this… this was different. He needed to be careful. Things could get complicated. ** Back in Logan’s office, Logan sat down at the messy desk, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. He glanced around the room, noting how disorganized it was, but he wasn’t focused on the mess. His mind was elsewhere—on Samantha. He hadn’t expected the flood of memories that came with seeing her again. The way her presence filled the room, the way her absence had left a void in his life that he hadn’t been able to fill, not even with his new wife. Snap out of it, he scolded himself. He was married now. To Blake’s daughter. That was supposed to be a good thing. Securing his future at Blake Industries had been a strategic move—one that the chairman himself had suggested. Marrying into the family had practically guaranteed him a managerial role at the company. It had been a clear path to success. But it had come at a cost. One he wasn’t sure was worth it anymore. His wife, Victoria Blake, had been nothing but supportive and caring. She was beautiful, kind, and everything a man could ask for in a partner. But Logan had never felt that spark with her, the way he had with Samantha. Victoria loved him in her way, and he was grateful for her loyalty, but he had never been able to love her the same. As he looked around the office, Logan’s thoughts returned to Samantha. The pain of their divorce had been buried beneath layers of ambition and duty. But seeing her again… it brought everything back. The promises he had made, the life they were supposed to build together—he had thrown it all away for a position at a company. And now, sitting alone in a disheveled office, he wasn’t sure if he had made the right choice after all. Samantha, having escaped Logan’s presence, found herself standing outside the office doors, her heart still pounding in her chest. She had thought she was over him, but seeing him again made her realize just how deep the wounds had cut. And now, they were working together, side by side. It was going to be a long few months.
