Confrontations

719 Words
The following day, the entire department gathered in the large conference room for the briefing on the new project. Logan stood at the front, commanding the room with his presence, as he discussed the details. The AI drones they were set to build would be revolutionary—cutting-edge technology that could change the course of the war in the Middle East. The country was relying on Blake Industries to deliver, and Logan was the key figure in making sure everything was perfect. “This isn’t just another project,” Logan said, his voice steady. “This is the biggest task Blake Industries has ever taken on. The AI drones we’ll be assembling have the potential to save thousands of lives on the battlefield. The entire world will be watching us.” Samantha sat among the team, trying her best to focus on the briefing, but her mind kept drifting. Logan’s presence was suffocating. His confident voice, the way he moved…it was like nothing had changed since their marriage. Yet everything had. As Logan continued speaking, the door to the conference room suddenly opened, and Ethan Blake stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on Samantha. “Samantha,” Ethan called out, interrupting Logan’s briefing. “I need to see you in my office. Now.” Logan’s eyes narrowed slightly as Ethan pulled her out of the room without explanation, but he continued with his presentation, though his expression had darkened. Samantha stepped into Ethan’s office. He was seated at his desk, leaning forward with a serious expression. “Close the door,” Ethan said quietly. Once she did, he gestured for her to sit. “I didn’t want to ask you in front of the others, but I need to know something. What’s going on between you and Logan Hale?” Samantha froze, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks. “I… nothing is going on.” Ethan studied her, clearly not satisfied with the answer. “David mentioned something about Logan being your ex-husband. Is that true?” She hesitated before nodding. “Yes, but that’s in the past, Ethan. We haven’t spoken since the divorce.” Ethan leaned back, his fingers tapping on the desk. “And now he’s here, leading this major project in my branch. Do you think there’s anything I need to worry about?” Samantha’s heart raced. She didn’t know how to answer. She hadn’t told Ethan about the messy details of her divorce, how Logan had broken her heart to climb the corporate ladder. How he had used his new marriage as a stepping stone to a managerial position. But she couldn’t bring herself to say all that now. “No, there’s nothing to worry about,” she managed. Before Ethan could press further, the door to his office burst open, and Logan walked in, his expression stormy. “We’re in the middle of an important briefing, and you’re pulling my team members out of it?” Ethan stood up, squaring his shoulders. “This is my branch, Logan. I can call whoever I want, whenever I want.” The tension between the two men was crackling like electricity in the air. Samantha stood frozen in the middle, feeling the heat of their battle. Logan’s dark eyes flickered toward her before turning back to Ethan. “We have a tight schedule to keep. If you have personal questions, maybe you could save them for later.” Ethan’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t back down. “I’ll run this branch how I see fit. Don’t forget, Logan, that while you’re here, you’re still working for me.” Samantha swallowed hard, feeling the awkwardness coil in her chest. She was caught in the middle of a power struggle between two high-ranking men—one of whom was her ex-husband, the other her current boss. And the worst part was, she couldn’t tell which one made her more uncomfortable. Logan took a step toward Ethan, with a low voice he replied. “I’m here to make sure this project is a success. Don’t stand in my way.” Samantha’s breath caught in her throat as the two men locked eyes, the unspoken challenge hanging in the air. This wasn’t just about the project anymore—it was personal. She could feel it.
