THE PRAYER BEFORE THE CRASH
New York City glittered under a blanket of early evening snow, the kind that made everything look softer, calmer, almost magical. From the 32nd floor of her penthouse, Elena Hayes could see the entire skyline glowing—gold, red, silver—like the city was already preparing for Christmas Eve. Inside, the atmosphere was even more luxurious. Soft jazz Christmas instrumentals played in the background while warm steam drifted from the massive marble bathtub she was soaking in. The lights were dimmed to a golden hue, scented candles lined the edges, and a gentle lavender aroma filled the air. Elena rested her head against the edge of the tub and closed her eyes. For the first time in weeks, she felt… peace. “Homegirl,” she murmured lazily, speaking to her AI assistant, “play something softer. Something that won’t remind me of work.” The AI replied in a smooth, warm female voice, “Of course, Elena. Switching playlist. Enjoy your evening.” Slow piano replaced the jazz. Elena exhaled, sinking deeper into the water. This was the life she built—peaceful, luxurious, and entirely her own. At least, that’s what she told people. But she knew the truth. Having money didn’t stop loneliness. Having success didn’t stop her mother’s constant question: “When are you bringing a man home?” And having everything she wanted didn’t fill the empty space in her heart she kept pretending wasn’t there. Her mind wandered to the staff she had left in charge of today’s big Christmas wedding. It was a high-profile event—one she had personally designed before handing it over to Anna to test her capabilities. Elena needed to stop working herself into exhaustion, so this was supposed to be a step toward trusting her team more. She was determined to enjoy her night. At least until her peace shattered. Her bathtub-side phone began vibrating, and the AI immediately announced, “Incoming call from Anna.” Elena groaned. “Oh, God. Why is she calling now? Decline it, Homegirl.” “Are you sure, Elena?” the AI asked gently. “Yes. Decline—” But the phone rang again. And again. Persistent. That meant trouble. “Fine,” Elena sighed and lifted her head. “Pick up.” The call connected, and Anna’s panicked voice exploded through the speaker, “Ma’am! Ma’am, are you there?!” Elena’s eyes narrowed. “Anna, breathe. What’s going on? I’m supposed to be relaxing.” “You didn’t hear?” Anna cried. “The bride left! She ran away! The groom is furious. The whole wedding is collapsing.” Elena sat up straight, water sloshing around her. “Excuse me? I gave you ONE assignment. One. And you can’t fix this yourself?” “I tried!” Anna whimpered. “But the groom is— he’s really angry. He said he wants everything cancelled. The decorators are confused, the chefs are waiting, the guests are asking questions—” “Oh my God.” Elena pressed her fingers against her forehead. “I trusted you with this. I wanted to see if you could handle the company without me. Anna, this is disappointing.” “I know, ma’am. I’m so sorry. Please come. Please.” Elena let out a long, exhausted breath. So much for peace. “Homegirl, end call.” “Call ended,” the AI confirmed. Elena stood from the water, wrapped herself in a thick white robe, and marched to her dressing area. Clothes flew off hangers as she got dressed in record speed—a fitted cashmere sweater, high-waist jeans, a long coat, and her black ankle boots. “Homegirl,” she called while brushing her hair into a sleek ponytail, “turn off all music and lights.” “Of course, Elena.” The penthouse lights dimmed. The music stopped. She grabbed her keys, her phone, and her bag. Just before leaving, she paused. She looked around her beautiful home—the quiet, the luxury, the loneliness. “Mom will call tonight,” she muttered to herself. “She’ll ask the same thing again… ‘Where is your man?’” She shook her head. “I shouldn’t have promised her I’d bring someone home this Christmas. What was I thinking?” Elena locked her door and stepped into the hallway. The elevator ride down felt unusually long. When the doors opened, cold December air swept across her face, reminding her how harsh New York winter could be. Her car—a sleek black Mercedes—sat waiting in the garage. She entered, started the engine, and pulled out. --- The drive was calm at first. Snowflakes drifted lazily across the windshield, and city lights blurred softly behind them. Elena drove with one hand and drummed her fingers on the steering wheel with the other. Her phone chimed. A message from her mother. Mom: Elena, when are you coming home? You’re not bringing a man again this year? Please don’t come alone. Elena swallowed. That familiar pressure tightened her chest. All her life, she had dreamed of love—real, magical love. She planned princess-like weddings when she was a teenager. She imagined walking down aisles, laughing under mistletoe, holding hands in the snow. But every man she ever trusted… broke her heart. She didn’t know if her heart had anything left to give. --- Elena pulled into a fuel station. The snow was thicker now, the air colder. She stepped out, filled her tank, then leaned against the car door, staring at the glowing city in the distance. The world felt strangely quiet. She whispered softly into the night, “Christmas… it’s been so long since I asked for anything. But tonight, please… just one miracle. Just give me a sign that love still exists. And if nothing happens today… I’m done. With men. With trying. With all of it.” She closed her eyes. “Amen.” The wind blew gently around her. She took one single step toward her driver’s door— CRASH!!! A car slammed into hers, metal screeching, glass shattering. Elena gasped, stumbling backward in shock. Her heart thundered. The door of the other car creaked open. A tall man stepped out, shaking snow off his coat. He lifted his head… …and Elena froze. Because she knew that face. And he knew hers. Josh. Her old classmate. The boy who once shared dreams with her in high school hallways. The man she never expected to see again. And the miracle she had just prayed for.
