CHAPTER 1: The Weight of Gold.
The ocean didn't care that Kevin Ashbourne was worth twenty billion dollars. It just kept crashing. Same as it did for fishermen. Same as it did for everybody. Kevin sat on that weathered bench at the edge of Crescent Bay Beach, jacket thrown over the armrest, white shirt sleeves pushed up to his elbows. He was sweating through the shirt anyway. "The Henderson merger is non-negotiable, Kevin. You will marry Lena. End of discussion." His father's voice, two weeks ago in the study. Not a discussion. A verdict. Behind him, his guys stood far back, two drivers in black that made no sense in this heat, pretending not to look at him. He hated it. He hated how the whole beach went quiet when he came. Mothers pulling kids closer. Teenagers picking up their towels and moving. People didn't see him. They saw the name on the cufflinks. Ashbourne. In PH, that name had weight. His family owned the land other companies built on. Owned the banks that gave the loans. Owned the people who made the rules for the banks. And Kevin? Kevin didn't even own his own evening. He watched a seagull dive and snatch something silver out of the water and fly off. Free. Lucky bird. It was getting late. Sun was low and everywhere was orange and pink, too fine for how he felt. He checked his watch, the Patek his father gave him at 21. His father called it a gift. Kevin knew what it really was. 5:47 PM. He should be home. Dinner with Lena and her parents. Another night of talking about seating charts and who sits where and smiling like he meant it. He didn't move. "You'll learn to love her," his father had said. "Arranged marriages bloom, Kevin." Easy for him to say. He married Kevin's mother because he wanted to. He loved her. Kevin didn't get a choice. "Excuse me?" Soft voice. Right in front of him. He opened his eyes. Girl, maybe 23, 24. Yellow sundress that kept blowing against her legs, hair in a messy ponytail, bare feet dusty with sand. Not social media pretty. Real pretty. The kind you look at twice because she's not trying. Kevin didn't change his face. That cold face he had practiced for years, he put it on. He stared at her. Four seconds. Five. Most people would have left. She didn't. "Are you okay, sir?" she asked. It hit him weird. When was the last time someone asked him that? Drivers didn't. His father didn't. Lena asked "are you okay" only when she wanted him to say yes so she could keep talking. No one asked like they meant it. His voice came out colder than he wanted. "What do you want?" She didn't flinch. She glanced back, three girls sitting on the sand about fifty meters away, watching, giggling, nudging each other. "Actually," she said, small smile, "I came for a hug." Kevin blinked. "It was a dare. My friends said I wouldn't have the guts to hug the scary billionaire." She tilted her head, looking at him. "I told them they were wrong." She knows who I am. Of course she knows. But she wasn't doing the thing everyone does, the sir, the bowing, the pictures. She was talking to him like he was just a guy on a bench. Something moved in his chest. When was the last time someone hugged him? Not handshake-hug, not photo-op hug. Real one. His mother used to. Before she died. Eleven years ago. Kevin stood up. He is tall. 6'2", and he saw her eyes widen a bit. But she stayed. This is insane. He opened his arms. Her face lit up, like really lit up, and she stepped in. When her arms went around him, something gave way. Not loud. Just a valve opening. Tension he didn't know he was carrying. She was warm. Hair smelled like coconut and salt. She held him like he was fragile, not scary. His head went quiet. For the first time in years, no merger, no wedding, no father's voice. Just quiet. He closed his eyes and held tighter before he could stop himself. He doesn't know how long they stood. Maybe thirty seconds. Maybe a minute. Time did that weird stretch thing. Then she pulled back, slowly, hands sliding off his arms. Cold air rushed back in. "Thanks," she said, smiling up at him. And before he could say anything, he didn't even know what to say, she turned and ran. Bare feet kicking sand, dress flying. Her friends swarmed her, screaming and laughing. Kevin just stood there. His drivers behind him shifted, confused. Kevin didn't care. He could still feel where her arms were. He didn't know her name. Didn't know anything about her except she asked if he was okay and hugged him like she meant it. And in thirty seconds she did what nobody else managed in years. She made him feel like a person. --- The drive home was silent. Black Maybach, AC too cold. Kevin staring out the window, replaying it. The way she didn't flinch. The way she smiled. The way she held him. He hadn't felt that quiet in years. Maybe ever. Even his sleep was scheduled, optimized. That hug was none of that. It just happened. The gates opened. Ashbourne Estate. Servant already at the door. "Sir, your father and Miss Henderson are in the dining room." "I'll be there in ten," Kevin said, mask back on. He went up, locked his bedroom, pulled his tie off and dropped it on the floor. Sat on the edge of the bed and put his face in his hands. She hugged me. He could still feel it. Warmth on his chest. Who was she? Probably just a girl doing a dare, already forgetting the grumpy rich guy on the beach. But he couldn't forget. Phone buzzed. Marco: Dinner with the Hendersons again? Need escape plan? Marco was the only one who got it. Best friend since uni, business partner, only person who saw Kevin, not the bank account. Kevin typed: Don't need one tonight. Actually feel... okay. Marco: Who are you and what have you done with my best friend? Kevin almost smiled. He went to the mirror. Sharp jaw, dark eyes, hair perfect. Ashbourne heir head to toe. But his eyes looked different. --- Dinner was exactly as bad as he thought. Lena across the table, blonde perfect, dress perfect, smile perfect. Talking about venues. "We're thinking of Orchid Hall, but mother says Rose Hall has better chandeliers," she said. Kevin nodded in the right places. He was thinking about sand on bare feet and coconut smell. "Kevin? Are you listening?" He blinked. Lena staring. "I asked which venue you preferred," she said, a little sharp. "Whatever you want, Lena," he said. His father at the head of the table nodded like Kevin was a good dog. "Good. The Hendersons have been generous to include us. Show some enthusiasm." Enthusiasm. He forced a smile. "Of course, Father." Lena's parents smiled back, that smile of people who already counted the money. Their daughter married to Ashbourne heir, name forever linked. They didn't care if he was miserable. They cared about the merger. "So," Lena's mother, Catherine, said, "have you discussed honeymoon?" Stomach clenched. "Not yet," Kevin said. "We were thinking Maldives," Lena said. "Or Bora Bora. Overwater bungalows." She said it like she'd ever wanted something she couldn't buy. Kevin thought about the beach again. Waves. Yellow sundress. That hug that cracked his chest open. Are you okay, sir? No. But for one minute, he was. And he wanted it again. --- Later, he lay in bed, staring at ceiling. He grabbed his phone before he could tell himself not to. Browser open. He typed: beach near Ashbourne estate yellow dress girl Stupid. He knew it was stupid. Results, all junk he'd seen a hundred times. Ashbourne heir to marry Henderson heiress. Merger of the century. Billionaire bachelor no more. Bachelor. He was never a bachelor. He was a deal his father made. Phone buzzed. Marco: You okay? You seemed off at dinner. Kevin: I met someone today. Marco: Who? Where? Kevin: A girl. At the beach. She asked if I was okay and then hugged me. Marco: A hug? That's it? Kevin: That's everything. Pause. Three dots. Marco: Bro you sound like a romance novel. You're scaring me. Kevin almost laughed. Kevin: I don't even know her name. But I can't stop thinking about her. Marco: Dangerous, bro. You're engaged. Your father will kill you if you fall for her. Fall for her. Was that what this was? Kevin didn't know. He just knew he needed that quiet again. Kevin: I know. Marco: So what will you do? What will he do? He couldn't call off wedding. Couldn't fight his father. Kevin: Nothing. There's nothing I can do. Marco: Then stop torturing yourself. Sleep. Tomorrow is new day. Tomorrow is new day. Kevin wished it was that simple. He dropped the phone on his nightstand and closed his eyes. Sleep took hours. When it finally came, he dreamed of waves, and yellow, and warm arms. And for the first time in a long time, he smiled in his sleep.
