CHAPTER 36 JULIAN WOKE EARLY and wondered at what point he’d stopped thinking about Malcolm. Was it while the drum and bass had pounded through his ears at the club? Was it while he was making a fool of himself on the dance floor with Simon? Or was it much later back at the flat when Simon had said there was no need to crash on the sofa when he had a perfectly good double bed? Julian lay awake as Simon slept, and pondered his good fortune. Little more than a day ago he was contemplating ending it all on the rails at London Bridge tube station. Now thanks to Simon’s kindness and generosity he felt a whole lot better, albeit embarrassed and ashamed of his own actions that night. Simon stirred and woke. “Hey. You’re still here then. You didn’t chuck yourself over the Embankment!”
