CHAPTER 42 NEVILLE COULD HEAR the baby screaming as he turned the key in the lock. “Hi Thelma!” He put his laptop case down in the hallway and ran upstairs. His daughter was alone in her bedroom, standing up and gripping the sides of her cot, with tears pouring down her face. “It’s ok. It’s ok. Daddy’s home now.” Neville picked up the sodden toddler and changed her nappy. Her cries subsided with the attention, and she sucked her thumb. “Let’s go and find Mummy.” He carried the baby downstairs and looked in the kitchen. There was no sign of Thelma. “Thelma!” He called out as he walked into the living room. Oh no, not again! The empty bottle of wine on the floor near to her hand said it all, as Neville walked over to the sofa to where Thelma lay sleeping off its effects. Ano
