CHAPTER 15 “YOU’RE NOT GOING out again are you?” Her mother’s voice had that familiar whine to it as she watched her daughter combing her hair in the mirror. “Yes, I’m meeting a man in a bar.” Thelma smoothed down her black cocktail dress and thought she’d get the argument over with straight away. “What?” “I said do you know where I left the keys to the car?” She suddenly decided she couldn’t face another scene while feeling so excited. “No, I haven’t seen them.” Sylvia’s face took on a sulky look, but Thelma decided to rise above it. “I won’t be late back. I’m meeting a friend for a drink.” “Who is she?” “Somebody from the Pilates class.” “Can I come? I’ll pay for the drinks. It’ll be my treat.” “Not tonight, Mum. Another time.” No! No! No! “Well, I’ll wait up for you.”
