Theo walked with my hand in his through the groups of people. We were starting to get stares so I tried to pull my hand out of his. His response was to lightly tighten his grip and adjusting my hand to the crook of his elbow.
More and more people began to stare and I started to become more and more uncomfortable.
We walked by a group of girls and I heard an angry shriek... Must be Audrey, I chuckled to myself. I really shouldn't be so petty, but that girl really got under my skin.
We walked up to a group of people, two boys and two girls. The taller boy with dark brown hair and dark eyes glanced quickly to the precarious position of my hand and smiled a large smile. The two girls looked intrigued and the other boy didn't seem to care at all.
"Guys, this is Persie, the daughter of my father's new Beta." He said, introducing me, grabbing the attention of the whole group.
They all looked at me now, surprised that my dad held such rank. They probably thought I was just some random girl that Theo had taken a liking to.
The tall boy smiled "Beta blood, eh? You are kind of small for a were wolf." He said looking at me intensely, making me shift from foot to foot.
"Jackson! That is extremely rude! Hi, I'm Chrissy, this i***t's mate." She said putting on one of the most kind smiles I've witnessed in my life. Chrissy was tall and muscular. Her build reminded me of my sisters. Her hair was a dark auburn and her eyes were a golden brown. She was very pretty.
"And this" she continued turning to the two quiet ones "Is Cheyenne and Elias." Cheyenne and Elias both had black hair and near black eyes. They were a little paler than Chrissy and Jackson but they were still of a larger build than me. Cheyenne nodded and smiled at me kindly and murmured a soft hello. Elias nodded his head respectfully but remained silent.
"Don't take them personally, they're always this quiet. Even when you get to know them." Chrissy said narrowing her eyes toward the two, making Cheyenne giggle.
"Are you two mates as well?" I asked.
They both looked at me with facial expressions that immediately made me laugh. "I'm taking that as a no." I said through my laughs, "I'm sorry if I offended."
Elias smiled a small but humored smile and shook his head. "She's my little sister. Like a shadow almost." His voice was low and raspy. The quality intrigued me. I bet he had a great singing voice.
My staring seemed to make him uncomfortable and he shifted his eyes to Theo. I quickly shook my head clearing the impulsive thinking. If I thought about it too much I would fixate on it. Not good to do that here.
"So Persie," Chrissy said in an interested tone " How are you liking it here so far?"
"Ah, it's ok. Just getting used to my classes and such." I replied.
"How old are you?" Jackson asked quickly
"17, I'll be 18 on Friday." I replied.
"August 29....you're a Virgo." Cheyenne said softly and I nodded to confirm her statement.
"Have you shifted yet?" Elias asked softly.
I froze. This is where it would get awkward, I was sure of it. My sister had already shifted, but I showed no signs of having a wolf. I showed siren qualities. My voice... almost hypnotized people. I had no sharpened senses other than the mind link I shared with my sister. It worked sometimes with my parents but I had to strain myself in order to get that to function properly.
"Ah, no." I replied looking at the ground. "I don't think I will have that ability, unfortunately."
The group silenced itself, knowing they brought up a sore subject. Theo cleared his throat to break the tension
"Not unfortunate at all, everyone is different, that is what makes the world amazing. Never feel sorry for being yourself. Wolf or no, you are always a member of this pack and will be treated as such."
Everyone nodded in agreement, they seemed sincere but I hardly knew them. I guess only time would tell if they actually meant it or not.
"So you will be 18 on Friday! Have any plans?" Chrissy chirped, changing the subject.
"Uh..." I said, unsure of whether or not Theo would want me to say anything.
"She does, we are going on a date." Theo said looking at his friends who had a shocked look on their face.
"Moving quick there, aren't ya?" Jackson joked. "Calling dibbs and not even letting anyo-eufff!" He was cut off by Chrissy's elbow to his rib cage.
She glared at him, telling him to shut up by the look of her face.
"Hello everyone!" a strong voice said over the sound system. "I hope you are all enjoying the festivities of the evening. Let's not forget the reason for our lovely gathering. This is to welcome our new Beta and his lovely family into our pack."
Oh no. The Alpha was announcing our presence publicly, I was just hoping we would be gradual knowledge.
"If you see them make sure you give them a warm welcome! Kaden, Ariel, Persephanie and Athena, Welcome to the pack!" He toasted. Everyone was given a flute of champagne during the speech, rather quickly because it was not a long speech (I guess the Alpha was not a man of many words) and they toasted our arrival. A loud joint welcome spread across the crowd of pack members.
Sure enough it seemed that the whole pack was now determined to find one of us and introduce themselves. I quickly downed the champagne I was given and asked Theo where the bathroom was. He looked worried at the urgency of my tone but agreed to escort me there quickly.
We entered his home and he took me down a quiet hallway. I went into the restroom quickly, my breathing starting to become rapid.
I was not social and didn't handle meeting so many new people well, especially since I was separated from my family. Usually they did the talking and I just smiled and answered when spoken to.
"Persie, are you ok?" Theo's voice came from the other side of the door, making me jump.
I cracked the door and pulled him inside quickly.
"I don't do so well with meeting people. I tend to have panic attacks, I'm hiding." I looked at my feet, ashamed that I was such a coward. " You don't have to stay, I will be fine by myself. I'm just trying to calm down a bit."
His footsteps got closer to me and he put his finger under my chin to guide my face to look at his. He was smiling.
"I don't like people either. Lets go find something to do until the party is over."
My mouth dropped open. Surely he couldn't mean. No way. We hardly knew each other. He pulled me out of the bathroom and ushered me up the stairs two flights and down another hallways. He opened a door and pushed me in. Just as I was about to protest I noticed the room he put me in. It was a library.
"I like to find peace in here." He shrugged. I smiled looking around the grandeur room until my eyes stopped on a beautiful piano in the corner of the room.
I walked over to it and touched the keys, "Do you play?" I asked Theo, not taking my eyes off the instrument itself.
"Ah no. My grandma did. Nobody who lives here now plays, but we keep it for rememberance of her." he said.
"I see." I murmured "Would you mind if I played it a little?" I looked up to him to gauge his reaction.
"Be my guest." He said enthusiastically, sitting in a chair getting comfortable.
I sat down and warmed up with scales, I know. I just like to begin that way...its habit. I began to play a song my mother taught me. I began to sing the lyrics of the sea and a storm that took the lives of sailors. I always tended to get lost in music..everything melted away when I played. I felt safe.
I finished my song and opened my eyes. Theo's eyes were wide with shock. He immediately clapped and stood. I bowed jokingly and said my thank you's.
I sat on the couch across from him and leaned back. I felt so much better now that I had played. I felt the seat beside me move and I opened my eyes and saw Theo had sat beside me. He took my hand in his and gently rubbed it with his thumb. It was calming, and made me feel oddly safe.
After a while of silence, Theo sat up quickly. "Oops. I've kept you too long. Your mom's noticed you are missing from the party." He grinned mischievously. I sighed. He stood holding his arm out to escort me back.
We reached the party grounds again and my mother met us at the door of the terrace.
"Are you ok?!" She asked worried, shooting a suspicious glance at Theo and scanning me for injury.
"Yes mom, Theo just understood I was overwhelmed and took me somewhere quiet to calm down." I said impatiently. She knew I hated parties.
Theo handed me off to my mom and made his way over to his father to chat.
"He is very handsome." my mom stated. She turned to me, worry filling her eyes. Her voice filled my head
Do not let him take who you are, wolves don't understand our free souls. I know what is about to happen, my darling you must stay true to yourself, do you understand?
I nodded in confirmation. My mother looped her arm in mine and we mingled for about an hour more, then made an early exit to save my sanity.
