The rest of the day went by in a blur of information, getting set up in my classes and being preoccupied with the idea of a date.
Finally, the last bell rung and I hurried to my locker. I grabbed my books that I would need for my homework and closed my locker and double checked that it was secure.
‘Athena where are you’ I thought to my sister ‘we are going to miss the bus’. No answer, hmm weird I thought to myself. Just then I felt my body jerk forward, the push was hard enough to make me fall but I have pretty good balance so I just stumbled, catching my balance quickly.
“You should watch out where you’re going, freak,” said a high-pitched voice, I sighed internally; Audrey.. great, I really didn’t have time for this right now. I turned to face her.
“I was standing here, maybe you should get your eyes checked. First you cant do a decent face of make up and now you cant see someone standing right in front of you.” I stuck with the taunts because I knew it got under her skin. If she came to me tomorrow and was a decent person I would drop the bickering, but I wasn’t about to let myself get walked all over by some prissy b***h.
She growled, which alerted me that maybe I took it too far. Crap, Athena where are you, I need back up!” I thought hastily. I didn’t have sensitive senses like her so I couldn’t exactly tell when I was dealing with a human verses a wolf.
Audrey reached out quicker than I could comprehend and pulled me close to her. “ I don’t know who you think you are, skank,” she said angrily, “But if you think you can get away with insulting me AND getting my man you have another thing coming.”
“Your man?” I replied boredly, my mind was racing for an exit route. She could hurt me if she wanted to, I wasn’t blessed with strength or speed.-, “Who might that be?”
“Theo! I heard he asked you out and you said yes!” She growled.
“Ahhhh, I see. You’re jealous he wont give you the time of day.” I said with a fake realization. She tightened her grip on my arm, making my bones protest, but I refused to let her know she was hurting me.
“He is MINE!” She basically roared in my face. I think it was pissing her off that I wasn’t reacting, she thought I was a mere human. She was wrong but I would make sure she didn’t know that.
“Am I now? That’s news to me.” A low voice came from behind me and I immediately relaxed in my mind. Thank god, Theo had amazing timing.
“Let go of her,” he said in a voice that sounded a little different than his usual, more authoritative and a LOT more dangerous.
Audrey looked at him shocked, her mouth hanging open and her cheeks red with embarrassment. “Let go of her NOW!” He said again with authority oozing from his presence.
Audrey let me go while shifting her eyes to the ground. She stalked off down the hallway, her shoulders tense, obviously furious. I turned around to Theo to tell him thank you. But when I turned, I bumped into his chest, I hadn’t realized how close he was to me. I took a step back and looked up to his face, which was not a very happy face, if I may add.
He realized that I was looking at him and made an attempt at relaxing (it didn’t work) He forced a smile on his face, which I returned. He was trying hard to reassure me the least I could do is thank him.
His blue eyes dilated while he looked at me, “Are you ok?” He gingerly took my arm and made mental notes of the bruises.
“I’m fine, Theo. Thank you for stepping in. Seems like Audrey really doesn’t like m- “
Just then I heard Athenas voice in my head screaming at me to hurry up because the buses were getting ready to leave.
“s**t! Sorry, I’ll see you tomorrow!” I said taking off waving my hand in the air at Theo. It’s times like this that I wished that I was taller, a person who was 5’2” really had issues maneuvering a high school hallway. Especially when the population was half werewolf. With a lot of excuse me’s and worries, I finally made it to the bus ramp.
Unfortunately for me it was not in time. All the buses had already left. “Shit.” I said to myself. Looks like I’m walking home today.
I texted my mom, dad and Athena letting them know I was walking home so they wouldn’t worry. I explained the situation with Audrey too. I turned around to make my way to the front, it was hot as hell. Arkansas was not as bad as Florida, humidity wise, but it was still the south and it was August.
I made my way to the road and started my walk, I put my headphones to my iPod into my ears. At least I would have time to listen to my music before we met our new Alpha.
I had been walking roughly three miles, I was in my own world contemplating real life jamming to my music. I was thinking about Theo and how peculiar the circumstance around him was. We just met today, yet I felt like I had known him forever. He was so.... mouthwatering. I am not like most girls my age, I like to think. I’m not boy crazy, I do well in school, I don’t lie to my parents, and I definitely don’t fool around with boys. But his eyes... his lips....his hair.... ugh. I sighed, looking up at the sky praying to Poseidon for self restraint.
Just then I noticed a purple sports car pulled to the side of the road in front of me by a hundred feet or so. I slowed my pace down, stranger danger and all.
The driver’s side door opened and I stopped completely. I was just hoping it wasn’t Audrey, I highly doubted Theo would come to my rescue this time.
A person put their feet out the door and stood. Unbelievable, I thought to myself as Theo turned and faced me with an easy smile. “Persie, get in the car. I’ll give you a ride home!”
I thanked Poseidon under my breath and walked up to the car, taking a picture of the tag and sending it to Athena in the process.
“Are you suspicious of me?” Theo asked, feigning offense.
“I hardly know you. I just met you today and you’ve been stalking me.” I laughed at my own sarcasm, pointing out just how much I had seen him today.
“Stalker, eh?” He said laughing “Adding that to resume.” He smiled charmingly at me not taking his eyes off the road.
I laughed at his joke and told him my address. “Really?” He said surprised “Well, then guess we are neighbors too.”
My mouth dropped open. This is unreal. “Now i have to see you at HOME too? You are a stalker.” I laughed.
He pulled up to the end of my drive way.
“Theo, thanks again” I said looking at him as I gathered my things “You didn’t have to, but I do appreciate you being so kind.” I smiled at him.
Just then I felt his hand on my cheek, “Any time, doll.” He said in a low voice. His eyes flicked down to my lips and back to my eyes. “What are you?” He asked me and my breathing hitched. Why was he asking that?
“I-I’m just a girl,” I said in a whisper leaning closer to his face, not breaking eye contact. “Obviously. What else would I be?”
“I don’t know. Something unique.” He said leaning in closer to me. We were so close I could count his eyelashes if I wanted to. I had never been kissed, and here I was, with the most beautiful boy on the planet, maybe two inches away from kissing him.
Knocking on my window broke the trans and I turned to see my dad standing there. “Oh my god.” I said, horrified.
I quickly got out of the car, and leaned down in the car. “Thanks again Theo, see you in class tomorrow.” I closed the door quickly and he pulled off. “Hey dad.”
I was so embarrassed at this point I knew my face was as red as a tomato. There was a boulder in my stomach. I didn’t dare make eye contact with my dad.
“Who was that?” He asked gruffly, like he was trying to stay calm.
“A boy in my classes. He saw me walking and offered me a ride. He lives somewhere in the neighborhood.” I murmured.
“Ah.” My dad said simply.
“Dad, I’m sorry...I don’t know what came over me. Please don’t be mad.” I said, feeling ashamed.
“Persephanie, I’m not mad. Just concerned. That doesn’t mean I don’t trust your judgement.” He said in an awkward voice. “Regardless, we have to get ready to meet with the Alpha, were having dinner at his home tonight.”
“Yes sir, sorry for today again.” I said hurrying in the house to get ready. Tonight was important, I needed to dress my best and get my mind back on track
