Elsie stepped around Marinda, crossing the room to hug her mum. "I'm okay. I was just asking. I'm not annoyed you're working late or anything."
"Something is clearly bothering you." Brenda drew back after returning the hug, keeping her hands on Elsie's shoulders and needing to look slightly upwards to meet her gaze.
"My boyfriend is missing. Don't you think that should bother me?"
"Are you sure that's all it is?" Brenda persisted.
"Yes, Mum. Now go to work. This is what you've been waiting for. Getting the chance to take on more responsibility. You never know, he might actually enjoy cutting back at work and you'll get to keep all those extra responsibilities." Elsie stepped back out of her mum's grip, trying to make her smile as natural as possible.
