To New Beginnings
Kayla stared at the ornate gold-trimmed envelope in her hand, her fingers trembling slightly. The promotion she had worked tirelessly for over the past year was finally here. Yet, instead of celebration, her stomach churned with a mix of excitement and dread.
She hadn’t been back to her home country in five
years. Not since that night.
The memories she had buried so deeply began to resurface. Her stepsister’s cruel smirk. The bitter taste of the drugged wine. The panic when she realized she had been sent to the wrong room. Kayla clenched her jaw and forced herself to breathe.
She had left everything behind—her stepsister, her haunting memories, and the life she once knew. In the years that followed, she built a new life for herself, climbing the corporate ladder with determination and grit. This promotion was supposed to be her victory, her fresh start.
So why did it feel like a trap?
The sound of her phone vibrating snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Kay!, you’re not chickening out, are you?” her best friend, Lily, teased from the other end of the line.
Kayla forced a smile into her voice. “Of course not. It’s just… a lot to process. Moving back, new role, new boss—”
“New beginnings,” Lily interrupted. “Look, I know it’s not easy, but you’re stronger now. This is your chance to show everyone who you’ve become. Besides, the past is in the past. You’ve got this!”
Kayla closed her eyes. She wanted to believe Lily’s words, but the pit in her stomach wouldn’t go away.
“Thanks, Lily,” she murmured. “I’ll be fine.”
Two Weeks Later
The sprawling glass headquarters of Coleman Enterprises loomed before her, a testament to wealth and power. Kayla adjusted the strap of her bag and straightened her blazer. She was no longer the scared, naive girl she had been five years ago.
Inside, the office buzzed with energy. Kayla made her way to the top floor, where she had been instructed to meet her new boss, Asher Coleman.
“Assistant Henderson?” a voice called.
Kayla turned to see a tall, impeccably dressed man in his early thirties. His sharp gray eyes scanned her from head to toe, his expression unreadable.
“Yes, sir. Good morning sir” Kayla replied, forcing herself to hold his gaze.
“Same to you, I hope you had a good rest from jet lag.” He paused so Kayla could give her reply.
When she did, he returned it with a low tsk “ Well then I hope you’re ready to work,” he said curtly. “I don’t tolerate mediocrity.”
Kayla squared her shoulders. “I assure you, Mr. Coleman, I’m more than capable.”
He raised an eyebrow, almost amused, but said nothing further.
As she followed him to his office, Kayla couldn’t shake the feeling that this job would be far more challenging than she had anticipated.
But what she didn’t know was that her greatest challenge wasn’t the demanding CEO—it was the little boy she would meet later that day.
The meeting with CEO Coleman was brief but intense. His words were few, but his tone was sharp and his expectations were high. By the time Kayla left his office, her shoulders were tense, and her mind was racing with already prepared tasks.
“Welcome to Coleman Enterprises just like the one in country C another hellhole and this one is a bigger one,” she muttered under her breath as she entered her new workspace, a cozy office adjacent to the CEO’s. She set her bag down and took a deep breath, determined to prove herself.
Just as she began organizing her desk, a soft knock at the door caught her attention.
“Come in,” she called out, expecting another member of the staff.
Instead, a little boy peeked his head around the doorframe. He couldn’t have been more than four or five years old, with dark brown curls that framed his cherubic face and striking gray eyes that looked far too familiar.
“Hi,” the boy said shyly, stepping into the room.
Kayla blinked in surprise. “Hello there. And who might you be?”
“I’m Seth,” he said, clutching a small stuffed bear to his chest. “Are you the new lady working with my daddy?”
Kayla’s heart softened at his innocent tone. “I suppose I am. Does your daddy know you’re wandering around?”
Seth shook his head, his curls bouncing with the movement. “Nanny went to get my snack. I wanted to see who you are.”
Kayla knelt down to his level, smiling gently. “Well, I’m Kayla. It’s nice to meet you, Seth.”
Seth studied her for a moment, his little brow furrowing. Then, to her utter shock, he declared, “You’re my mummy.”
Kayla froze, the words echoing in her mind. “I—I think you’re mistaken, sweetheart. I’m not your mummy.”
But Seth was undeterred. He stepped closer, his wide eyes brimming with certainty. “Yes, you are. I can tell.”
Before she could respond, the sound of approaching footsteps filled the corridor.
“Seth! What are you doing here?” a firm voice called out, sending a shiver down Kayla’s spine.
Asher appeared in the doorway, his piercing gaze flickering between Kayla and his son. “What are you doing here?” he asked again, his tone both stern and controlled.
Seth didn’t flinch. Instead, he pointed to Kayla and said with absolute confidence, “Daddy, she’s my mummy.”
The room fell into a stunned silence. Kayla felt the weight of Asher’s gaze settle on her, his sharp eyes narrowing as if trying to decipher some hidden truth.
“I can explain,” she began, her voice faltering.
Asher crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. “I suggest you do.”
