The world was quiet when I opened my eyes. Too quiet but everything felt suffocating. I didn't move as I was still lying beside Voridian and his arms were around me, the heat of his body grounding me in a way nothing else could. My cheek rested against his chest, and for a moment, I listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
Soon, I wouldn't be able to hear his heartbeat like this anymore. Our bond was still there, I could feel it but sooner or later, it was going to be over.
Voridian stirred beside me and I felt his breath on my neck and then he whispered my name, low and rough. “Elowen...”
I pulled back just enough to see his face. His eyes opened slowly, heavy with the same grief I was holding inside. I didn’t know what to say.
