TWENTY-THREE Several hours had flown past since Tooms and Tony had returned from the accident site at the Hudson embankment. They had joined Steel and McCall, who sat at the conference table comparing notes on the off chance that something slotted into place. They knew, even though it was two different cases, that they must be related somehow. McCall stood up to get another coffee and, after peering into the empty vessel, stopped and took the cell phone from her pocket when it buzzed violently, alerting her of a new text message.
