Aria's pov
I staggered backward, tripping over my own feet as my scream reverberated through the room's walls. My palms scraped the chilly floor as I fell hard to the ground.
I scurried to my feet while keeping my gaze focused on the scene in front of me.
"Why is my life timing so awful?" I asked myself as I crawled forward slowly.
My eyes widened in horror as I staggered backward once more, and I was unaware that my hands had flown to cover my mouth.
As I drew nearer to him, tears fell down my cheeks. The regent's corpse was spread out on the ground, a silver dagger sticking out of his chest, its blade buried deep in his heart.
He was surrounded by a dark, crimson pool of blood that was slowly leaking across the chilly floor. As I stared at the gory scene, I felt a scream rising in my throat.
I sat there stunned, the scene's reality sinking into my mind. At my feet lay the regent, a man I had known and feared. Only the sound of my labored breathing broke the suffocating silence.
As I looked at the dead reagent's body, a chill went through my body. Who would have done this? Moreover, why? I had no answers to the questions that were racing through my head.
I mustered the last of my courage and used all of my remaining physical and spiritual strength to have the dagger removed. Both my hand and my body were now covered in blood.
As I sat there pleading for assistance, the door flew open, letting maids and guards pour in.
I sat in the middle of the confusion, gripping the bloody dagger in my hand while my body trembled violently. With shocked, horrified, and accusing expressions on their faces, the guards and maids gathered around me.
I flinched away from the dagger as one of the guards put out his hand to seize me. My eyes went wide with terror.
I pleaded, rubbing my palms together, "No, please."
Insults were hurled at me, and some maids gave me hard cheek slaps while guards moved forward to seize me. Despite the fact that my mouth failed me this time, I could only cry uncontrollably.
"What is happening here?" The voice of Alpha Rowland rose above the throng. The maids and guards moved aside from him until he was standing directly in front of me.
I nearly choked as I said, "I swear with the moon goddess i didn't do it," but I was prepared to clear my name.
One of the maids pointed to the silver dagger and said, "It is a lie, she killed the alpha reagent with that dagger," which made me cry even more.
"That is ridiculous." Rowland answered, advancing toward me until his gaze finally fell upon Regent Eric's corpse.
"Everyone saw the dagger." Others joined the maid in her argument, saying, "I did."
"How was it possible for a weak omega like me to survive the alpha reagent without speaking, killing him without getting hurt?" I started to doubt myself while I was staring at my bloody hands.
Alpha Rowland stared at me with unreadable eyes and a narrowed brow. With a firm voice, he turned to face the maid who had accused me.
"What evidence do you have to back up your claim?" Without averting his gaze from mine, he asked.
Is he attempting to protect us? Kayla chirped in, my wolf. We are doomed, I thought to myself as I laughed pitifully.
The maid paused, her anxious gaze flitting about the room. She stammered, "I saw her arguing with the reagent earlier last night."
"And now she is holding a dagger while standing over his corpse," chimed another maid. I noticed that the people who were opposing me were Amelia's stooges when I looked up.
I roared in laughter and got to my feet. Where I found the courage was a mystery to me.
My eyes were burning with anger as I screamed, "I met him like this, not that I killed him."
Alpha Rowland's eyes shifted back to me, looking for any hint of remorse. I shook my head, crying more as I insisted that I was innocent.
"I did not kill him, so it is not true. I swear, "Even though everything was against me, I still cried more."
He commanded, "Drag her to the dungeon, she will be executed in two days now," and left as the guards pulled me out.
I shouted after him, "Alpha Rowland, hold on, I have something to say," and he turned to look at me. He indicated that I could speak by raising an eyebrow.
I started to speak, but he nearly spoke before me.
“I Alpha Rowland…..” I interrupted him while he was speaking.
I hurt Alpha Rowland's ego by declaring, "I Aria of Dark Howl pack, a lowly omega hereby reject you as my mate." I also severed all of our connections. I watched as he swiftly marked the pains with a chilly glare while holding his chest.
I gave him a victorious smile and turned to leave. Everyone let out a shocked gasp. The moon goddess pairing a weakling like me with the alpha was unexpected.
Kayla told me in my mind as I cut her off, "This will be the biggest mistake of your life."
With my own thoughts, I sat down on the chilly, bare prison floor and muttered, "He was practically useless in our life, not as if he was ever going to accept me as his mate or concubine."
After losing my sleep due to being accused of murder, I closed my eyes to give my brain a break. I had just gone to sleep when I heard my name being whispered.
When I slowly opened my eyes, I saw Lydia, my best friend, standing directly in front of me in the cell.
“How did you enter?” Looking around to avoid pointing fingers at her, I asked her inquisitively.
As she pushed me out of the cell, she muttered, fumbling something into my hands, "Leave that, I will explain later."
"Go as quickly as your legs will allow you to, and enter through the rear gate," she muttered as she shoved me.
Without second thought, I turned to my heels.
I thought, "Perhaps there is still hope for me," as I sprinted out of the pack without turning around.
