Chapter 38 Lucky Girl

1180 Words
Richard looked at him quietly. A lot of emotions were running through his mind. He had to admit that Dempsey did have some skills. He did not shoot wildly in a panic like the other offices; he analyzed the situation and sensibly left. That decision had saved his life in the end. It seemed that no matter the person or the context, it was more important to be smart than aggressive. A wise man would always control his emotions and fears so that he could survive.   "Well well… did you kidnap these people? Oh, there's another dead one. Boy, based on our country’s criminal justice system, you should be sentenced to death!"   Safe for the moment, Dr. L began to look around. When he noticed that Lora West was still alive, he was full of joy and relief.    “Death penalty? Who is gonna give me that sentence? The government or the monsters outside?”          Richard shot a cold look at Dr. L, then turned to pick up a thick steel bar in the corner and inserted it into the bolt. He had made a lot of preparations on this iron door to keep the mutant creatures out. Barring some major unforeseen event, the two mutant dogs would never get in.          “Damn it! Is it a virus? How did the dogs mutate? Hey, what’s happening outside? Why is it so messy? Why are all the phones dead?”          Looking through a narrow ventilation window in the basement, Dr. L found the entire community in a state of chaos. There were crowds of people crying and running around, and behind them, cats and dogs of all colors and sizes. They would suddenly jump out to bite people and then hide quickly in the grass.                                                                               Dr. L even saw a tiny Chihuahua lying on the chest of a dying old woman, biting hard and ripping out some organ or other.   What really worried Dr. L most was that when he tried to call his colleagues for help, he couldn’t even connect to the phone network. It seemed the whole thing was down.   "Virus? Bull s**t! If it's a virus, why are we humans all okay? We are screwed, the animals outside are going crazy. What should we do?"   Janet's chubby face was twitching with worry as she observed the situation outside. There were dozens of pets attacking humans. There was zero chance she could escape now.          “Just wait. When these mutant creatures finish their meals, they will leave.”          Looking at the mess in the neighborhood, Richard silently withdrew his gaze. No one could go out alive in this chaos. All they could do was wait for the creatures to leave.          "Wait? How long? I can't wait!" Dr. L said anxiously, pointing at Lora West.   "We need her out of here. Every second we delay could be very serious. We must leave here immediately. Captain Dempsey, I order you to rescue the hostages immediately and escort us out of here."          “i***t! f**k off! Dozens of my men died for this bullshit mission. Say more one word and I will throw you out to the dogs.”   Dempsey took off his mask, revealing a fierce face and a pair of angry eyes that seemed to be full of fire. His was the face of a middle-aged man in his forties. In addition to the vicissitudes of time, there was the added expression of grief at losing his men.    “Do you know the consequence of defying orders? Let me tell you the truth, this woman's serum and vaccine are important ... Ah!”          Dr. L was trying to explain, when he suddenly screamed and fell heavily on the ground. Behind him, Janet carried an aluminum tube and said in her dramatic voice, "Shut up! If I were stronger I would kill you with my bare hands! Now sorry, what were you saying?"            Speechless, Richard looked at Janet. There was a red patch on the end of the stick that seemed to be blood. What a ruthless woman! But it’s ok, save trouble.          “Attention, everyone! Those are mutant creatures outside. If you don’t want to become one, take an activation potion from me.”          Richard took the activation potions out from his bag. There were not many, about 200-300. The green potions were lined up side by side, just like glow sticks.          “Richard, this is the virus vaccine? And what about the mutant creatures you mentioned just now?”          Janet came up first, followed by Lily and Wayne. But both Anthony and Captain Dempsey did not move. They were staring at each other coldly, looking alert.          "There is no virus. This is called an activation potion. It is a special potion to prevent you from becoming like the monster outside.”          Richard didn’t explain much. He carefully took out an activation potion, opened the cover to reveal the needle, and walked over to Mary.   “Baby, come and get an injection, don’t be afraid, it’s okay.”   “No, I don’t want one. You know I’m afraid of pain.”   “It’s okay, I’ll be gentle. If you are scared, close your eyes.”          “Ok, fine. Be careful, baby.”        …          Everyone looked at them dumbly. How could they talk about this in such a normal way? It wasn’t just some everyday vaccine!   While people were distracted, Janet stooped to pick up two potions, opened the covers and poked them both fiercely into her arm. The abrupt action immediately caught everyone's attention.   “Janet, you injected two? Is it okay?”          Lily leaned against Wayne, her eyes full of worry.          "What are you afraid of, Richard told us this is an activation potion. It must be safe. Maybe one more can make me more beautiful? Hey, I’m hungry, do you have any food, Richard? "          “Oh god…” Richard shook his head, pointing at the food storeroom, and sighed. Fortune favors fools, he thought.   The function of the activation potion was more than just beauty. It was said to be extracted from human bone marrow, which could not only resist the degenerative effects of Radiation D, but also stimulated human potential.   If you were lucky enough, you could get mutant skills like Anthony had in the last life. In fact, the more activation potions you injected, the greater your chance of activating one of these superhuman skills.          Originally, an ordinary teammate like Janet would only be assigned a maximum importance rating of 1 in his plan. Richard had guessed that Janet could not withstand Radiation D, so her DNA would soon be broken. Before long, she would be a mutant walker and a threat to Mary and Steven.   Now that she’d taken a double dose of activation potion, Janet had doubled her chances of increasing her powers, and thus doubled her potential use to Richard.
