Chapter 37 - One after another

"You can't do this to me. Let me in. I can be useful to you!" Dr. L squeaked.

He was completely unaware that a dark figure was slowly approaching him along the wall.

"Useful? Your only function was to feed those creatures out there and you will satisfy that purpose!"

Richard held the knife up as if to stab Dr. L’s hand. He didn’t care that his wife and child were just behind him. Nothing was more important than protecting them.

"No, Richard. Look outside. Janet and Lily are coming in this direction!"

Mary stopped Richard because through a the crack of the door Janet, she spotted Lily and her boyfriend stumbling towards them.

“All right, open the door and let them all in!"

For a moment Richard considered not letting them in but Janet and Lily were Mary’s best friends. If he didn't help them, Mary would never forgive him. Besides, Richard's impression of Janet and Lily was not bad and he needed people who could be trusted.

In the end, Richard wasn't sure if the dogs would leave. If they blocked the door, some meat bait would be needed to distract them. If Dr. L didn’t behave, he would be the first one to be tossed out as bait.

But Richard soon found that he had oversimplified the whole thing. With Janet and Lily running towards in their direction, Captain Dempsey, Toby, and several others had followed them. The escaping group instantly attracted the attention of a mutated dog.

The creature roared and its four powerful claws scratched against the floor tiles while its huge body surged forward toward the group.

“No, don't eat me. I don't want to die!”

At the back of the line was Toby. He had lost his glasses in the chaos and due to his short-sightedness, the large mutant dog appeared even bigger, like a train flying towards him.

Without thinking, he grabbed someone behind him and threw her in front of the mutant dog. The woman fell to the ground screaming.

"Rose? How could you do that to my girlfriend, asshole!"

Beside Toby, a stout man rushed to him with a roar. It was Thomas, one of Mary's classmates. He and his girlfriend, Rose, had been hiding behind the police while they were surrounded. When Toby betrayed Richard, Jacob supported him and added a few words himself.

He thought they were working together. He did not expect that Toby would pull Rose down in order to stay alive. He was even more vicious than the two mutant dogs.

"Jacob, have you lost your f*****g mind? If you keep getting in the way, we will both die.”

 Realizing that he couldn’t get rid of Jacob, Toby was very anxious. In just a few seconds, there only remained half a thigh and a pile of organs where Rose’s body once was. The rest of her body had been completely devoured by the mutant dog.

“f**k you. I will come for you later.”

Looking at the wreckage of Rose’s corpse, Jacob was distraught. But he was very clear that if they didn’t run now, Toby and he would die together. He kicked Toby's leg hard and then turned to run. However, a sharp pain spread from Jacob’s ankle through his whole right foot. He lost his balance and fell to the ground.

"No need to come for me anymore. Since you love your girlfriend so much, you can keep her company."

Behind him, Toby was holding a paper knife covered with blood.

At the moment Jacob turned around, Toby stabbed him in the right foot with a paper knife. Blood was seeping out from the puncture wound and there was a trail of blood on the floor.

“Toby, you son of a bitch...”

Before Jacob could finish his sentence, he suddenly found that everything went very dark. Something was pocking his head and a fishy smell hung over him. He tried to reach out to grab Toby, but he found that his hands were touching something prickly instead, like countless needles poking him. Then he felt a sudden pain in his neck and lost all feeling in the darkness.

With just one bite, the mutated dog bit off Jacob's neck and swallowed his entire skull.

Hearing the sound of chewing, Toby started to tremble. He looked forward and saw Captain Dempsey moving carefully away; he clearly wanted to escape when the mutant dogs were feeding on his dead body.

"Please save me…"

Toby’s brain was awash with regret. He had just gotten a girlfriend but they hadn’t slept together yet. He didn't want to die with so little life experience.

Unfortunately, no one paid any attention to him. No one responded to his cries for help. Dempsey witnessed everything and despised Toby for betraying his friends.

After finishing off Jacob's body, the mutated dog jumped straight for Toby and its large fangs pierced his neck. Toby cried as his flesh was torn from him like dried beef jerky by the two mutant dogs. His last regretful thought before losing consciousness was that he had killed two people in order to survive and it had all been for nothing.

“Shut the door!”

Captain Dempsey finally entered the room, then collapsed on the ground, breathing heavily.
