Chapter 33 - Intricate Truth

What the f**k! How did he know what I was doing? Just one more meter and I would have had him.   Looking at Dr. L, who was very quickly backing away, Anthony had the impulse to kill him on the spot. But Captain Dempsey reacted faster. He pointed his gun in Anthony’s direction and made it very clear that if he moved, he wouldn’t hesitate to shoo.   “Captain Dempsey, the dog team is in place. Shall we start the search?”      Waiting outside the house were the four members of the dog team. Unlike the heavily armed SWAT offices, these guys were unarmed. Instead, they carried thick, high-strength fibre leads around their wrists. On the end of the leads were the intimidating police dogs, huge German Shepherds, with fierce brown eyes and sharp-looking sharp fangs.   The dogs scared the women in the house and they couldn’t help screaming. Even Steven was terrified and started to cry.   “Make the boy shut up.”   Steven's crying made a tall policeman next to him irritable. Mary tried but she couldn’t get Steven to calm down, so the policeman reached out to cover the boy’s mouth and stop his crying. Before his hand had even reached the boy’s face, there was a sudden gasp of shock from his teammates.   “I will kill anyone who tries to lay a hand on my family.”       Richard showed up to protect Mary and Steven. There was a cold expression in his eyes, aggressive and intimidating.   Clean sharp and decisive, Richard had run up behind the policeman and snapped his neck. The other policeman stared at him in shock. Who was he?! And how was he so strong? Even Captain Dempsey couldn’t break someone’s neck like that.   They had all assumed that Anthony guy was the main suspect. Where had this guy come from?        “You killed Kevin Lee? Shoot him now! I want him dead!”        When he saw his fellow officer slumped dead on the ground in a strange position, anger clouded Captain Dempsey’s mind, preventing him from behaving in a rational way. He wanted to pull the trigger and kill Richard there and then.   It was Dr. L who just managed to prevent that from happening by standing right in the Captain’s face and shouting:   “No, no shooting! You haven’t found the hostages yet so how on earth can you kill him?!”   “f**k off! I am gonna kill this bastard! Look what he did to Lee!”   Captain Dempsey suddenly waved his hand, which made Dr. L stumble backward and fall. To everyone's surprise, Dr. L, who had been so timid before, did not flinch this time. He quickly got up from the ground, looked at his watch anxiously, then turned to Captain Dempsey and shouted:        “Dempsey, I am in charge of this mission and I am ordering you to stop what you are doing. There are only a few hours left. It is imperative that we save the hostages.”         “What do you mean? Why are there only a few hours left?”   Captain Dempsey’s anger swiftly subsided as he thought things over in his mind. He realized that things were not as simple as he thought. This hostage rescue mission had been very confusing from the beginning.   With no explanation, Dempsey’s leaders had insisted that he cooperate with Dr. L. Now it seemed that things were even more complicated than he had imagined. This guy obviously knew more, at least he knew that the people they were dealing with were very dangerous. Dempsey felt he was being played like a fool.   “Damn it, Dr. L, I know when people are trying to hide s**t from me!" Captain stared at Dr. L.   "Captain Dempsey, I know you have doubts, but there are some things that you don’t need to know in your position. All I can tell you is that one of the hostages is Lora West that and one of her relatives will be a Presidential candidate in the next election. This family member is now seriously ill and needs the bone marrow of all his kin to save his life."   Candidate for the presidency? Dempsey's heart beat wildly. As someone who had worked a long time in the business, he knew who Dr. L was referring to. But that phrase: “we only have a few hours”, how could he be so specific? Did the police have a deadline for the hostage's life? But no, that couldn’t be possible. If so, there would be no need to catch the suspect for interrogation purposes, they would go straight to saving the hostages.   "Fine! I won't kill him for the moment. But what do you mean we only have a few hours?!" Dempsey stared at Dr. L, scanning his face. There was no way he would let one of his men die for a mission that didn’t make sense.   "Well, there are only a few hours to go, so it's not against the rules to tell you that, according to the international health agency, some mysterious virus will break out around the world in the next few hours. The virus has a high fatality rate and Lora West must be found so that she can be vaccinated.   Captain Dempsey, now you understand why I stopped you. Richard and Anthony are very dangerous. Lora West’s disappearance must be related to them.   You'd better interrogate them as soon as possible or we'll all be in trouble. Of course, you can be assured that the vaccine is available to both of us. As long as the mission is completed successfully, I will make sure that you and your family are safe," said Dr. L.
