Chapter 32 - Dr. L

Everyone was in a panic, that was until Vera stepped forward. Despite her initial fright, she soon regained her poise.
“You… Where are you from? I am the Deputy Secretary to the Mayor! You have made a big mistake. I need to talk to your boss!”
As an official in the political system, Vera was very familiar with the rules. Something had gone badly wrong here and someone was to blame.
This residential area, the Villa Zone, was full of families of important government officials. How could there be an operation like this with so many armed police!
“Deputy Secretary to the Mayor?”
The officer Vera spoke to sounded slightly unsure about this as if he didn’t know how to treat her. But then a large, stout officer came forward, pointed his gun at Vera's chest, and said,
“I don’t give a f**k who you are! I’m warning you now to back off, or you’ll be responsible for what happens.”
“Well, what if I don't? Are you big, bad SWAT team guys afraid of me? This country is governed by the rule of law. It doesn’t matter who you are or who you work for, you have no right to kill people without trial!”
Vera was overwhelmingly forceful and took another step forward.
“I’m warning you! Do not come any closer!”
The big man jerked the muzzle of his gun at Vera's chest, and for a moment it actually looked like he was going to shoot!
“Enough! The man we're after is dangerous but I don’t think this woman has anything to do with it. Captain Dempsey, put the gun down please.”
At this critical moment, someone finally intervened to stop the unruly officer.
A short, middle-aged man poked his head out from behind the SWAT team.
“Dr. L, are you she isn't who we're looking for?”
Captain Dempsey looked back with a frown at the small, mouse-like man. He was always hiding behind them, nervous and out of place. It was hard for the Captain to disguise his contempt.
He really had no idea how this wretched man, Dr. L, came to have the power over him. He was authorized not only to be fully responsible for all arrests but also whether to kill or not.
“Captain Dempsey, don't worry, I have smelt the woman. There is no odor of blood around her. She’s not the one we need,” Dr. L answered.
He still wasn’t showing his whole body. He just leaned his head around and glanced furtively at Richard and the others, like some sick voyeur.
“Who is this perverted man? We are the ones being held at gunpoint, yet he is the one hiding like a cowardly rat.”
Everyone cursed him silently. But Henry Pope’s body was still warm; no one dared to curse Dr. L in case he ordered his men to shoot.
It was strange that this guy was here together with all these armed SWAT teams. Were there really such high-level criminals here? Everyone waited anxiously for his next words.
“That tall, thin guy over there. He smells of blood. Take him first.” Dr. L pointed at Anthony. When he saw Anthony staring back at him, he immediately retreated to hide behind Captain Dempsey. Anthony looked like he could kill him just with the ferocity of his stare.
Blood? Hearing this, Richard thought maybe Anthony had been hurt while retrieving the potions.
Seeing Richard's puzzled look, Anthony quietly shook his head.
When he went to the hospital to get the vaccines the previous night, he had accidentally injured a security guard at the hospital, and the guard’s blood had splashed on Anthony’s clothes. Then, just a few hours later, the police were at the door, along with the mysterious Dr. L. How could he have smelled the blood smell on him? It was like he was a sniffer dog!
“Okay, put your hands up right now! We have received a report that there are a number of people who have gone missing in this house. Dog Team, get in here and search everywhere. Be sure to find the hostages.”
Richard and Anthony looked at each other. Sure enough, the SWAT teams were indeed after Edith, Kelly, Lora and the two cops.
Anthony gave Richard a slight nod, a decisive look on his face, and calmly walked forward.
No, Anthony wants to risk it! Richard's heart tightened as he guessed what Anthony was up to.
Anthony wasn’t coming forward to surrender, but to take Dr. L hostage!
He must know how dangerous this is! Richard thought to himself.
Why would Anthony risk his life? He is much stronger than me; if he wanted to escape this situation, even all these SWAT teams wouldn’t be able to hold him. He’s doing this for Steven. He is risking his life to get my family out of this!
For a moment Richard clenched his fists.
“My name is Anthony. I’m handing myself in. I’m the one you want.”
Anthony stared calmly at Dr. L, his hands raised in the air, and slowly approached him. Beneath his calm exterior, however, he was aiming murderous thoughts at Dr. L.
Ten metres, eight metres, five metres…
With his experience, Anthony knew that if he got just a little closer, he could catch Dr. L before any of the police officers could respond. Then the SWAT team would give up and Richard's family could leave!
“Stop, don't come any closer! If you take one more step I'm afraid you'll try something . Captain Dempsey, Anthony here is very dangerous. I suggest you shoot him immediately!”
Dr. L twisted his body and ran awkwardly behind the officers. His gait was so ridiculous it would have been pretty amusing to Anthony, were the situation not so serious.
