Chapter 58: The Story Behind Todd Lewis

1028 Words
When Todd Lewis heard about the mutant hamster problem, he reacted without hesitation. Once he got to the scene of the disturbance, though, there was nobody around to explain what was going on, and the area smelled of blood.   Todd called the police, and under their direction, he forcibly opened the door. Upon entering the place, Todd felt that things were not good, and he thought – From the pungent smell of blood, even a pig could tell that something is wrong. Not knowing what else to do, he ordered everyone to withdraw immediately, but before anyone could move, a black shadow entered the room. Without thinking, one of the security guards attempted to hit it with a baton. Unfortunately for him, he was too slow, and the shadow attacked his neck with vigor. The guard screamed as he fell to the ground. His hands clutched his throat, and blood jetted out from between his fingers. He began to convulse, and in a matter of seconds, he was dead. Slowly, the creature walked into the light, and the room was filled with fear. The thing that had attacked the guard was a horribly big, black hamster. It was the size of a cat. Its sharp teeth were nearly ten centimeters long, and it was covered in blood.   Todd fled the apartment. Once he was outside, he tried to phone the police, but the lines were down. So, he sent several security guards to the nearby police station to report the situation; but, much to his dismay, only one man returned. Todd asked the man what had happened, and he said, “You may not believe this, but the minute we walked through the gate, we were attacked by a flock of mutant sparrows. Then we were attacked by a three-meter-long zebra snake. It bit the head security guard’s face. Its venom was poisonous, and he was dead in under a minute. Then we met a big black cat and a group of fist-sized black ants, and by the time we reached the police station, four out of the seven men you sent were dead.  As for the three of us that arrived at the police station, one man just disappeared. He was walking a little slower than the rest of us. So, who knows what manner of  ferocious beast dragged him away?” Todd: “And in the end, only you survived?” The security guard nodded his head silently. Todd thought about it for a minute, and then, in a low voice, he said, “There must have been a Doomsday event…”  “What are we going to do?” the security guard asked. Todd: “We will have to form a security detail to collect all available food. Then we need to clean the plants and trees near the property to prevent fierce animals from hiding in them.” In the following days, Todd encountered a man and a beautiful woman that had escaped from building number 14, only to be followed by a huge mutant dog. Fortunately, the dog seemed to be full, so Todd was able to rescue them. The man’s name was Milos Jackson. The woman’s name was Vera Albert Thompson, and the big dog’s name was Mutant Creature. After being saved by Todd, Vera was fond of him. Not only did she give him a pistol, but she also gave him sound advice. She believed that society was on the brink of a total collapse, and that they needed to hoard food, recruit people from the community, and organize rescue teams. The things she suggested made sense to him, so he went along with them – and sure enough, by the third day, civilization as they had known it, was a thing of the past. Thanks to Vera’s quick thinking, and Todd’s response, his people managed to get by that first hurdle. In the community, with the exception of  Jacky O’Brien’s gang, he could not think of anyone who might pose a threat to them and their way of life. Today, however, when Todd brought his men to collect food again, they unexpectedly met with resistance in the form of three strangers; two men and a woman. He was startled, and a man named Wood Brown whispered into his ear: “Captain, shouldn't you be scared? You can see the size of the bags the men are carrying. They must be filled with food. We have not eaten since last night, and one of our men fainted. These three should leave the bags as compensation! If they dare to resist, we can kill them. They are outnumbered and you have a pistol, so you don’t need to worry about any resistance.” “Do you really think that we should steal their bags?” Todd asked. Wood nodded and said, “Not just the bags… We should take the woman as well. Look at her chest, butt, and legs. She is a real tootsie! Now that the world is so chaotic, there is no one to stop us from doing as we please. To whomever we please…” A girl? – thought Todd. He took off the gold-rimmed glasses and rubbed his eyes. He didn’t need the glasses, but he wore them as an accessory. Vera liked them, and after rescuing her, he felt like a hero in a movie, and it made him feel good to do things for her. He had saved the beautiful woman, and now he wanted to win her heart. Thus, he could control his animal urges, and this woman didn’t interest him. It was understandable, though, that his men would want an outlet. “Will it work out?” he wondered. “Those men look very strong, and they are not afraid of us…” Brown eyed the men skeptically. They had their hands in their pockets, as if they didn’t have a care in the world. “It’s false bravado,” he said. Little did he know that the one man had a bullet-loaded pistol hidden in his pocket, and the other had a police issue submachine at ready. “I think that they are frightened,” he continued. “Listen to me. I will trick the woman while you surround the men. What do you think?”
