Episode 1: The Demon Who Closed His Eyes
The lecture hall buzzed with chatter, but Aria hardly noticed. She had long since perfected the art of zoning out in class, staring at the professor while her mind drifted elsewhere. Today, though, her attention was stolen by something different. Someone new had walked into the room. He wasn’t just handsome—he was breathtaking. Tall enough to make the doorway look too small, his posture radiated the kind of cold elegance that made others shrink back without realizing it. His black shirt and tailored jacket seemed sculpted to him, his long legs carrying him across the hall as if he were untouchable. But what unsettled her most was the way he closed his eyes. Slowly, deliberately, as though the entire world ceased to exist for him in those moments. And when he opened them again—dark eyes, almost too deep to be human—the air around him shifted. Aria’s friend, Mei, nudged her from the side. “Hey, stop staring, you’ll drool.” Aria blinked, heat rising to her cheeks. “I’m not—” “Yes, you are.” Mei smirked. “Every girl in here is. Look at him. He’s like—what’s the word—an aristocrat straight out of a Gothic romance.” The boy—no, man—didn’t even glance at the stares directed his way. He moved to the back of the lecture hall, sat down with perfect composure, and closed his eyes again. Aria’s other friend, Daniel, leaned forward from the row behind them. “Rich. Definitely rich. Look at that watch. And those shoes—custom made.” “You notice the strangest things,” Mei muttered. But Aria wasn’t listening. Something about the stranger’s presence pulled at her, like a thread tied invisibly around her wrist. His aura was cold, yet… magnetic. And when his eyes flicked open once more, they landed on her. Just for a second. Her heart stumbled. --- Lucien closed his eyes again. Humans always stared. They couldn’t help it. His kind had always been made to attract, to command, to bend wills without effort. Five thousand years, and still, he couldn’t escape the same reactions. But this girl… The brief moment their gazes met was different. She hadn’t looked at him like prey or like someone untouchably divine. Her stare had been sharp, fearless—curious, even. Interesting. Lucien exhaled softly, a faint smile twitching at his lips before disappearing again. It had been centuries since anyone had caught his attention this quickly. He had lived through wars, plagues, kingdoms rising and falling, countless human faces blurring into nothing. Yet hers lingered. Perhaps enrolling in this ridiculous human institution wouldn’t be so boring after all. --- After class, Mei immediately hooked her arm through Aria’s. “Okay, confession time. You were staring at him, right? Who is that?” Daniel answered before Aria could. “Lucien Vale. I overheard some seniors talking. He transferred here but nobody knows from where. Rumor says his family owns half the city.” “Rich and gorgeous.” Mei sighed dramatically. “The universe is unfair.” Aria forced a small laugh, though her chest still felt unsettled. “You two can drool. I’ll just… pass.” “You say that,” Mei teased, “but you were hypnotized.” Aria didn’t respond. She couldn’t explain the strange heaviness in her chest when his eyes had met hers. It wasn’t just attraction. It felt like… he had seen through her. She shook her head. Impossible. --- Lucien lingered near the courtyard fountain later that evening, eyes half-lidded as the human students passed by. He felt their stares, their whispers, but none mattered. Then he heard it—the sound of laughter. Bright, unrestrained, cutting through the dusk. His gaze shifted. Aria stood with her two friends under the lamplight, her hair catching the faint glow, her smile bold in a way few dared in his presence. She looked unafraid. Unmoved by the weight of his existence. For the first time in centuries, Lucien felt his composure crack. Just a little. “She’ll be trouble,” he murmured under his breath. Yet he didn’t walk away. --- That night, Aria lay awake in her dorm, staring at the ceiling. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his face—those dark, bottomless eyes, the way he seemed both distant and dangerously close. She told herself it was just curiosity, the way anyone would be curious about a mysterious, ridiculously attractive transfer student. But deep down, she knew it wasn’t that simple. Something about Lucien Vale wasn’t normal. And she couldn’t decide if she wanted to stay away from him… or if some part of her was already too close.
