I stared hard. This was unmistakably one half of the pair of family jade heirlooms passed down through my family.
Back when my parents got married, my grandma had placed them in their hands with her own, a symbol of unity in marriage and eternal family legacy.
Then, on my wedding day to Silas Hayes, my father had solemnly handed one pendant to each of us.
Mine still rested warm and safe against my chest at that time.
But Silas's... it was hanging around this spoiled brat's neck at that moment, just a decoration for him to flaunt while he ran roughshod over everyone.
I forced down the searing pain and white-hot rage coiling in my chest.
'Fine,' I thought. 'I am going to find out just how many more secrets my so-called good husband has been hiding from me.'
Just then, the hotel's revolving door swung open again.
Ethan Vance walked in, beaming, with his wife, Ava, on his arm and their six-year-old son Kevin's hand in his.
He was the biggest investor in the entire local social circle, and the man my father had been trying to connect with for ages.
I hurried forward to greet them, but before I could even open my mouth, a shrill, enraged scream tore through the quiet harmony of the lobby.
"Who said you could come in here!" the spoiled brat shrieked.
The spoiled brat went sprinting out of the private room, his little face twisted into a mask of fury. He jabbed a finger right at the tip of Kevin's nose and screamed hysterically, "Today's my birthday, and it's only mine! Who the hell do you think you are? Get out! Get out right now!"
Before anyone could even react, he spun around, lunged at the nearby catering cart, snatched up a glinting steel dining knife, and hurled it at the Vance family with every ounce of strength he had. The blade made a whooshing sound and then a loud c***k as it grazed Kevin's smooth, pale cheek before embedding itself deep in the decorative wall behind him.
For a split second, nobody moved.
A deep gash bloomed on the terrified boy's face, and bright blood crept slowly out of the wound.
Ava Vance let out a sharp, breathless scream and wrenched her son tight against her chest, shielding him with her whole body.
The smile slid clean off Ethan's face and froze there. When his gaze landed on the screaming brat, his eyes were so cold they could kill.
Ethan said coldly, "Fine, just fine. Ms. Blair, your hotel... has really been an eye-opening experience."
My heart dropped straight through my stomach.
Ethan was our most important investor. Nearly half the hotel's supplies and cash flow depended on him.
Blinding rage shot straight to my head, and I lunged forward to grab the spoiled brat.
But the kid's two grandparents lunged faster, cutting me off, and one of them slapped me hard across the face.
Then they tilted their heads down to sneer at my name tag. Emma sneered, "Ivy Blair? You shameless little w***e! A lowly little manager dares to touch my precious grandson? You have got a hell of a lot of nerve!"
Then they turned to the pale-faced Vance family, looking down their noses at them with undisguised contempt.
Emma continued, "What are you staring at? Can't you understand plain English? Get your little bastard out of here now! This entire hotel is booked for my grandson today! The fact that my grandson is letting you walk out of here on your own two feet is already more than enough dignity for you!"
She planted her hands on her hips, spittle flying and practically spraying straight into Ethan's face. She added, "If you do not get moving right now, I will call security to drag you out like dead dogs! Don't you dare blame the Hayes family for not leaving you any dignity when that happens!"
I was just seconds away from losing control and lashing out when the assistant manager darted between us in a flash. She said frantically, "I am so sorry, sir! She does not know her place. Please do not get angry. There is no point ruining your mood over this! I will apologize on her behalf. I will even get down on my knees if that is what it takes! I am so sorry, I am really so sorry!"
Then she turned to me, her voice dropping to a frantic, pleading whisper. She pleaded, "Ivy, my good lady, please do not do anything reckless. Think about this hotel. If we offend the Hayes family's golden child, this place will go under for good. We will all lose our year-end bonuses, everything we have worked for this year!"
I clenched my fists so tight that my knuckles made a loud, sharp c***k.
I had never swallowed such a massive insult in my entire life.
The little brat lapped up every bit of the assistant manager's groveling, and his chubby, round face immediately bloomed with smug, arrogant satisfaction.
He copied a mannerism he had seen on TV, dragging out every movement like a puffed-up little tyrant as he plucked a napkin to wipe the grease off his grubby, pudgy fingers.
He said with a smug grin, "Hmph. At least you, old lady, know how to follow the rules!"
