I was just about to step forward and continue dealing with that little brat when a sharp, agonized scream from Ava cut through the chaos. She cried out, "Kevin! What's wrong with you? Don't scare me like this!"
I spun around sharply. Kevin's face had drained of every last bit of color, and he slumped limply into his mother's arms, completely unconscious. A gash so deep that it cut all the way to the bone sliced across his cheek, with blood still oozing steadily from the wound, and the sight was sickening.
"Quick! Call an ambulance!" I barked at the stunned waiter standing frozen behind me. The next second, I was already lunging forward, dropping to one knee to check the boy's condition. "Alert the hotel infirmary! Have the doctor bring a first aid kit and get here now! Move!"
The entire lobby erupted into total chaos. And yet, cutting straight through the noise came sharp, grating applause and whoops of celebration, loud and unmistakable.
Emma cackled, clapping her hands so hard that her face crumpled into a mess of wrinkles. "Great! That's what you get for messing with us and mistreating my grandson! This is what you get for picking a fight with us; you deserve it!"
The brat copied his grandma, bouncing up and down as he shrieked, "He's just playing dead! Bleh bleh! Shame on you! Throw all of them out!"
Ethan's head snapped up. His bloodshot eyes bore into the shouting old woman and child, and a thick blue vein bulged and throbbed against his forehead. He didn't utter a single word, but the murderous fury pouring from his gaze was so thick that it dropped the temperature in the room several degrees.
I helped the hastily summoned hotel doctor work on the boy, packing the wound to stop the bleeding and running a quick check. All the while, I listened to that inhuman, sick celebration from the family behind me, and my heart turned to ice. 'Silas, look at this! Look what you've let run wild!' I thought.
Ethan slowly pushed himself to his feet and turned to me. He said coldly, "Ms. Blair, it looks like our partnership ends here. Effective immediately, I'm withdrawing all my investment, and we're cutting off the entire supply chain." He paused for a beat, his gaze shifting to the still-yelling brat, and the murderous rage in his eyes was almost tangible enough to touch. "As for this brat that hurt my son, I want blood for blood."
He flicked his hand in a casual gesture, and the two huge bodyguards behind him stepped forward instantly. The bodyguards marched straight for the boy without the slightest hesitation.
When Emma saw them coming, she dove in front of the kid like a protective mother hen, squawking at the top of her lungs, "How dare you! This is an outrage! This is the Hayes family's territory! I dare any of you to lay a single hair on my grandson!"
I stepped in to try to talk Emma down. I said, "Your grandson hurt a kid. Shouldn't he at least apologize to the family first, right?"
She puffed out her chest, stuck her finger right in mine and Ethan's faces, and sent spit flying everywhere as she shrieked, "Apologize? Not a chance in hell! I bet this name scares the living daylights out of you! My daughter is Chloe Reed, and she's the lawful wife of Mr. Hayes, the head of your group! Silas dotes on my daughter and gives her everything she wants! If you so much as lay a finger on Rory today, my daughter and son-in-law will make sure you can never show your faces anywhere in this city again!"
The whole lobby went dead silent. Nothing echoed through the space but her arrogant, blustering threats. 'Mrs. Hayes? When did Chloe take my place?' I wondered.
Emma saw that I had frozen mid-step and immediately assumed that I had been intimidated. She snickered in that sharp, condescending tone of hers, her face twisting into a smug, wrinkled sneer. She said, "Well, well. Chickened out the second you heard my son-in-law's name, huh? Weren't you so tough and cocky just a minute ago?"
She planted her hands on her hips, and her spittle almost splashed right in my face. She added, "Let me tell you something. A big shot like Silas isn't some lowlife trash like you can afford to mess with! If you know what's good for you, you'll get down on your knees right now and grovel to my precious grandson to apologize!"
