Ashley Smith, the twenty eight year old daughter of Harold and Lucy Smith who were members of the council of Eden, watched Father Caleb walk out with a distracted look on his face. It was the same every week. The priest came to her and left looking like he was in a trance of some kind. Ashley knew that the priest visited the ruin of his church every day and stood there for some time. The man was increasingly lacking focus and his behaviour reminded Ashley of people engaging in impulsive acts of self-destruction. It was still fairly early and Ashley had no plans for the rest of the day. Her parents were always busy with work and Ashley had no interest in work or education. She did not think she needed either.
