THE PRICE OF A DEBT
Heavy rain fell that night.
It lashed against the windows of a small rented house at the end of a narrow alley.
Laura sat on the cold floor, hugging her knees. Her t-shirt and training pants were soaked from walking home from college in the rain. On her lap was a glass of plain tea and a plate of rice with a fried egg. That had been their dinner for the last 3 days.
In front of her, on a shabby sofa, sat a middle-aged man. His face was gaunt, his eyes red, and his hand trembled holding a glass of cheap liquor
That was her father. Bramantyo.
Laura : “Dad… let’s eat first, okay?” Laura’s voice was soft. Careful.
Dad : ram looked up. His eyes were empty. “Eat? With what? You haven’t even paid your tuition, Laura!”
Laura : Laura lowered her head. “I can work part-time again, Dad. Take more night shifts at the cafe. I’m sure it’ll be enough to pay Pak RT’s debt…”
Dad : “PAK RT’S DEBT?!” Bram slammed his glass down. It shattered. “That’s only 2 million! I’m talking about 300 MILLION! THREE HUNDRED MILLION, LAURAAA!” He yelled.
Laura flinched. Her chest tightened.
300 million. That number had haunted them for 2 years. Ever since her father’s textile company went bankrupt after being scammed by a business partner.
Since then, their lives had turned upside down. From a mansion to a 2x3 meter rental. From a car to a broken-down motorcycle. From a bright college student to a girl working 3 jobs just to survive.
Knock. Knock. Knock. Three knocks on the door. Heavy. Authoritative.
Dad : Bram turned pale. The cigarette in his hand fell. “He… he’s here,” he whispered.
Laura: Laura frowned. “Who, Dad?”
Before Bram could answer, the wooden door was pushed open.
And standing in the doorway were 6 big men. Black suits. Black sunglasses. Blank faces.
In the middle of them stood a man.
all. Maybe 190cm. An expensive black suit soaked by rain but still neat. Slightly wet black hair. A sharp jawline. Eyes… gray eyes that were cold. Staring straight at Laura.
As if he’d known her for years. A chill ran down Laura’s spine.
Nathaniel : “Good evening, Mr. Bramantyo,” the man’s voice was low. Hoarse. But full of power. “I’m Nathaniel Adiputra.”
Bram immediately fell to his knees. “My King… I’m sorry… I’m late on the payment…”
KING? Laura was confused.
Nathaniel didn’t even glance at Bram. His gaze was locked on Laura. From her wet hair, to her pale face, to her trembling hands.
Then his lips curved. Slightly. Not a smile. More like a predator who had finally found his prey.
Nathaniel : “I didn’t come to collect the debt,” he said. “I came to collect the payment.”
Bram : ram swallowed hard. “B-but Sir? We had an agreement…”
Nathaniel: “An agreement,” Nathaniel cut him off. He stepped inside. 2 of his bodyguards closed the door. The rain outside seemed to disappear. “You said that if you failed to pay within 2 years, you would hand over the thing most precious to you.”
Laura: Laura’s heart pounded. “What do you mean?”
Bram: Bram couldn’t bring himself to look at Laura. His head hung lower. “Forgive me, my child…”
Laura: Laura’s blood ran cold. “Dad? Payment for what?”
Nathaniel finally moved. One step. Two steps. Stopping right in front of Laura. He smelled expensive. Cedarwood and blood.
He crouched down, level with Laura who was sitting on the floor.
The distance between them was only an inch
Nathaniel : “Laura,” he said her name. Softly. As if he’d memorized it a thousand times. “18 years old. 3rd semester student. Blood type O. Brown eyes. And…”
His finger lifted. Touching Laura’s chin. Tilting it up so she had to meet his eyes.
“…possesses a bloodline I’ve been waiting for for 200 years.”
Laura: Laura slapped his hand away. “Let go! Are you crazy?! Dad, who is this?!”
Bram: Bram was crying. “He’s the Wolf King, Laura. Leader of the 12 largest packs in Southeast Asia. He… he’s the one who lent Dad money back then. With collateral.”
Laura: Collateral for what?!” Laura screamed.
Nathaniel stood. Elegant. Dangerous. “The collateral is you.”
He looked at Bram. “Mr. Bram defaulted. So per our contract, his firstborn daughter is now mine. Starting tonight.
Laura: “WHAT?!” Laura’s world collapsed.
“NO!” Laura stood up. “I’m not an object! I’m human! Dad, please tell me this is a lie!”
Bram: Bram could only cover his face. “I had no choice, Laura… If it wasn’t you… he would take Dad’s life… and Mom’s from the grave…”
Laura : “So you sold me?!” Laura backed away. Tears fell. “For 300 million? I’m your daughter, Dad!”
Nathaniel signaled with 2 fingers. Two bodyguards immediately stepped forward.
Laura: “Don’t touch me!” Laura kicked. Bit. Scratched. But the strength of 2 grown men was too much.
She was dragged away.
“LET GO! HELP! IS ANYONE THERE?!” Laura scream
Nathaniel walked past her. Stopped at the door. He looked down at Bram still on the floor.
Debt paid. From now on, she’s mine.” Nathaniel Said
Then he looked at Laura who was struggling. His voice was only loud enough for her to hear
“I’ve waited for you long enough, Laura. 18 years. Don’t make me wait any longer in the car.” Nathaniel said
The door closed.
The rain poured harder.
Laura was dragged into a long black car. Inside it was cold. It smelled expensive. And there was one empty seat next to Nathaniel.
The door locked from the inside. Click.
aura was panting. Her clothes soaked. Mascara running. “What do you want from me? Money? I don’t have anything!” Laura
Nathaniel leaned back. He took off his suit jacket. The muscles on his arms showed through his white shirt.
Nathan : “I don’t need your money, Laura,” he said quietly. “I need your blood.”
“Blood?” Laura Confused
Nathaniel: “Yes. The blood of the Moon Guardian’s lineage.” He looked at Laura’s neck. “Blood that can break a 200-year-old curse on my family. Blood that can make me… normal again.”
Laura shook her head. “I don’t understand…”
“You will,” Nathaniel took Laura’s hand. Holding it tight. Cold. “At my house. In my territory. In the place where you will be mine… forever.”
The car drove off. Leaving behind the small rental and a father still kneeling on the floor.
Laura stared out the window. Jakarta was dark that night.
And for the first time in her 18 years of life…
She realized she had just been sold.
Not to a human.
But to the Wolf King.
