Blake’s pov It's war, and watching people die was part of it. Death wasn’t new to me, but this was the first time it scared the s**t out of me. I looked at the woman who had effortlessly captured my heart. She was my mate, and to me, she was the most important person on earth. The burns and bruises on her body made my heart weep. At least she was still alive. I moved her hair to expose the crook of her neck. My lips curled into a sad smile. My mark should rest there, but I knew she wasn’t ready to accept me as her mate. I didn’t blame her, though. Her ex had put her through hell. I wanted to give her time, but I guess time didn’t wait for us. Fate can be cruel sometimes. I pursed my lips together and bent down, prepared to mark her as mine. My mark would save her life. I hoped she would understand. But even if she didn’t reject me, I couldn’t care less. My life was not as precious as hers. I inhaled her scent. Oh, she smelled so good. Her aura was pulling me into a daze. With my heart racing in my chest, I took a little while to enjoy her scent. Perhaps it was the effect of the bond; it was the first time a woman made me feel like that. My cheeks brushed against hers. The sparks that exploded surprised me. They were magical. My lips lingered on her soft neck, wishing the circumstances were different. Oh, how I wished she was awake and yearning for me, as I craved for her. I wanted to have the freedom to bask in her aura and sniff her alluring scent whenever I wanted. If only I could drown in the sea of lust with her, ravishing her every inch. It would be a privilege to hear her moan my name. Alas, all of that was far from reality. My mate didn’t want me as her life partner, and right now she was barely alive. Like I said, fate can be cruel. I gulped down my sentiments. It wasn’t the time to get emotional. Time was ticking, and I had to mark her. My teeth lengthened. I closed my eyes as I pierced her skin as gently as I could. Oh, she tasted so sweet. I longed for her, but I would do nothing without her approval. It was bad enough that I had to mark her without her consent. Despite my emotions going haywire, I would behave. My buddies were in the hospital room with us, but I paid them no mind as I cleaned her wound once the marking was finished. My gaze lingered on the bruises and burn marks on her body, which were now gradually fading away. I grinned. She was healing. My mark saved her life.
