Sophia Chen's office was a fortress of glass and steel.
Adrian stood at the window, looking down at the city spread beneath him. From this height, the Harbor was a distant smudge, a wound on the city's face. The people on the streets were ants, their lives insignificant, their struggles invisible.
*They look down on us from up here,* he thought. *They think we're nothing.*
He turned away from the window. Sophia was at her desk, surrounded by files and documents, her face pale with exhaustion. She'd been working for days, tracking the money, following the trail.
"Selena told me you found something," Adrian said.
Sophia looked up. "I found a lot of things. Some of them are going to change everything."
She gestured to a chair. Adrian sat down, his eyes on the documents spread across the desk.
"The money trail," Sophia began, "is a labyrinth. Shell companies, offshore accounts, fake charities. It's designed to confuse, to obscure, to make it impossible to trace."
"But you traced it."
"Some of it." Sophia pulled out a single sheet of paper. "The money flows from the Eight to Damien, and from Damien to his soldiers. But there's a pattern. A pattern that leads back to someone else. Someone who's been pulling strings from the beginning."
Adrian leaned forward. "Who?"
Sophia met his gaze. "I don't know yet. But I've narrowed it down. The money passes through a series of accounts, each one more complicated than the last. But they all lead to the same source. A person who's been operating for decades. Someone who controls everything from the shadows."
Adrian felt a chill run down his spine. "My mother."
"No." Sophia shook her head. "Your mother is the head of the Eight. She's powerful, but she's not the source. There's someone above her. Someone who's been manipulating everything from the beginning."
Adrian stared at her. "That's impossible. My mother controls everything. She told me herself."
"Maybe she believes that." Sophia's voice was gentle. "Maybe she's been lied to, just like everyone else. But the money doesn't lie. It flows from the Eight to your mother, but it flows to her from someone else. Someone who's been in the shadows for decades."
Adrian felt the world tilt. His mother. The head of the Eight. The woman who'd killed Dante. And even she was a puppet.
"Who is it?" he asked. "Who's controlling everything?"
Sophia shook her head. "I don't know yet. But I'm close. The pattern is clear. The money flows through a series of accounts, each one more complicated than the last. But they all lead to the same place. A place that's been hidden for years."
Adrian leaned forward. "Where?"
Sophia pointed to a name on the document. A name that made Adrian's blood run cold.
"Your father," she said. "He's been controlling everything from the beginning."
---
Adrian stared at the name. His father. The man he'd never known. The man who'd abandoned him before he was born. The man who was supposed to be dead.
"That's impossible," he said. "My father is dead. He died before I was born. My mother told me."
"Your mother told you a lot of things." Sophia's voice was gentle. "She's been lying to you your whole life."
Adrian felt the world tilt. His father. The man he'd never known. The man who'd been controlling everything from the shadows.
"How do you know?" he asked. "How do you know it's him?"
Sophia pointed to a series of transactions. "The money flows from this account to your mother's accounts. The account is registered to a shell company, but I traced it back to its source. A man named Edward Cross."
Adrian felt his breath catch. Edward Cross. His father. The man who'd abandoned him. The man who was supposed to be dead.
"He's alive," Adrian said. "He's been alive this whole time."
Sophia nodded. "And he's been controlling everything. Your mother. The Eight. The entire city. He's been pulling the strings from the beginning."
Adrian stood up. His hands were shaking. His vision was blurry.
"I need to find him," he said. "I need to find him and I need to destroy him."
Sophia looked at him. "Adrian—"
"Don't." His voice was flat. "Don't try to talk me out of this. He's been controlling everything. He's the reason my mother abandoned me. He's the reason Dante is dead. And I'm going to make him pay."
Sophia nodded slowly. "Then we'll do it together. But first, we need more information. We need to know where he is, what he's doing, and how to stop him."
Adrian looked at her. "What do you need?"
Sophia pulled out a folder. "I need you to find someone. Someone who can help us."
Adrian took the folder. Inside was a photograph of a man. He was older, with gray hair and a weathered face. His eyes were cold, calculating.
"Who is this?"
"His name is Arthur Vance." Sophia's voice was flat. "He was one of the Eight. A financier. He left the organization years ago, but he knows everything. He knows the secrets. He knows the truth."
Adrian studied the photograph. "Where do I find him?"
Sophia handed him a piece of paper. An address.
"He's in hiding," she said. "He's been hiding for years. But I found him. He's living in a small town outside the city. Under an assumed name."
Adrian took the paper. "I'll find him. I'll make him talk."
Sophia reached out and touched his arm. "Be careful, Adrian. He's dangerous. He might try to kill you."
Adrian looked at her. "I'm counting on it."
---
Adrian left Sophia's office and walked through the glass tower's lobby. The city spread out before him, cold and indifferent. The Harbor was a distant smudge, a wound on the city's face.
*My father,* he thought. *The man who abandoned me. The man who's been controlling everything.*
He felt something break inside him. Not grief. Not anger. Something deeper. Something that felt like the death of hope.
He got into his car and drove. He didn't know where he was going. He just drove, through the streets of Uptown, past the glass towers and the sleek storefronts and the people who lived in a world he would never understand.
He found himself at the Harbor. He parked the car and walked down to the water.
The Harbor was quiet. The ships were dark, their lights extinguished. The water lapped against the docks, slow and rhythmic.
Adrian stood at the edge, looking out at the darkness. The water was cold and black, like the void inside him.
*I'm going to find him,* he thought. *I'm going to find my father, and I'm going to make him pay.*
His phone buzzed. A text from James:
*"Where are you? The crew is getting restless. We need you here."*
Adrian stared at the screen. He wanted to ignore it. He wanted to disappear into the darkness and never come back.
But he couldn't. He had responsibilities. He had people who depended on him.
He typed a reply:
*"I'm coming."*
---
Adrian arrived at the Sunset Bar an hour later. The place was still a ruin—shattered glass, bullet holes, bloodstains on the floor. But the crew was there, waiting for him.
James was standing in the center of the room, his face pale with worry.
"Where the hell have you been?" he asked. "We've been trying to reach you for hours."
Adrian didn't answer. He walked to the bar and poured himself a glass of whiskey. His hands were still shaking.
James followed him. "Adrian. Talk to me."
Adrian took a long drink. The whiskey burned his throat, warming him from the inside.
"I found my father," he said. "He's alive. And he's been controlling everything."
James's face went pale. "What? That's impossible. Your father died before you were born."
"That's what my mother told me." Adrian's voice was flat. "She lied. He's been alive this whole time. He's been controlling the Eight. Controlling everything."
James stared at him. "How do you know?"
"Sophia found the trail. The money flows from him to my mother. He's the source. He's the one pulling the strings."
James shook his head. "I don't believe it. Your father—"
"Is a monster." Adrian's voice was cold. "He abandoned me. He let my mother raise me alone. He let her pretend to die. He killed Dante. And I'm going to destroy him."
James looked at him for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"Then we'll destroy him together. But first, we need to find him. We need to know where he is."
Adrian pulled out the address Sophia had given him. "He's in a small town outside the city. Hiding under an assumed name. I'm going to find him."
James studied the address. "That's dangerous. He might try to kill you."
Adrian smiled. It was a cold smile, full of teeth and nothing else.
"I'm counting on it."
