Chapter 1: The Escape
It was the lights out of the new year and everyone just wanted to continue but unfortunately it wasn't possible, why?... Mrs Edwin was in charge, she was the meanest orphanage head ever unlike sister roselyn who was unavoidably absent. The very moment Mrs Edwin's cologne was smelled by the poor children every form of chit chat stopped.
During lunch the next day, Katie had lunch duty but as always skipped it and then got herself into the 'BBB' which was short for the Big Black Book, but she couldn't care less she was at a rebellious age; she was 16 years old and would do anything to see what the world beyond the four walls of Saint Peter's orphanage looks like, although she was born in The orphanage and was always told by their heads that the world was evil, she still believed otherwise, some of the children who were picked as reasonable ages from the Church Street always told stories about the city and how colourful it was, how the food was edible, how the festivals were entertaining and the zenith of their stories was always of the amazing fireworks on New Year, Christmas, and other festivities which they could never pronounce right.
one fateful night after 'lights out', the rebellious Katie took out a napkin and a chunk of coal which she got from the kitchen and throughout her big escape plan while she was busy at that she perceived 'the Edwin' and without thinking twice she threw the piece and hurried to bed. The following morning the plan was gone "But where?" she asked herself and while she was thinking, someone slid a note in her pyjamas and it's read:
if you ever want to see your precious plan again meet me behind the chapel after lunch.
~anonymous.
After Katie had already this mysterious note, she could do nothing but pray that the 'mystery Guy or girl' was not a tattletale. She was anxious for lunch and that was suspicious since she never like to lunch duty. Immediately after lunch the younger rushed to the chapel only to find a tall handsome lad
"Hi I'm Keith you have a really nice plan but something is missing...". The lad was saying until he noticed that the girl in front of him was lost in thoughts. "hello...?" He said to retrieve her audience but she was unable to answer until he tapped her on the shoulder, back to reality. " I'm so sorry, I was just wondering why I don't know you... I mean I'm very popular, but you don't know everyone..." Katie said in her defense . " Well true, you're very popular, but you don't know everyone, like me ... no one knows ." Keith was another rebel, he was also sixteen years old, no one knew him because, he sneaked out every morning and returned only for lunch and for bed. He had gone to the city many times and had alot of acquaintances there; both the rich and the poor, he had tasted many of the city food and affirmed that they were delicious. Keith answered the many questions Katie had to ask .
The teenagers became very close and planned very well for their big escape and this time, they weren't coming back. "We need alot things, because the route we would follow would take at least three days to reach the city" Keith informed. " But why? You always went and came back on the same day" . Katie said. "Well you see, the secret door I followed was at the security house and he only let me pass because I offered to help him every Friday" he said . "And so?" Katie asked still confused. " The main problem here is that every worker has been ordered to never let you out since you always made your will to escape blantant" Keith explained and now it was clear to Katie that she had no choice in this . Keith was the shepherd and she the sheep and all she had to do was follow and do as her he bade her.
One of the fridays on which Keith helped Mr. Eastwood the security guard, he was spotted by Mrs Edwin. " Hey you come here at once" she ordered. The lad was scared to his bones, he had lied to her that he was terribly sick and could only stay at the clinic until night but this was morning. "Yes ma'am" he said with a shiver in his voice. She questioned him but he had no answers, fortunately the kind old guard came to his rescue . " Edwin dear, the lad is still very sick, but his sickness comes and goes you see, and so, he offered to help old me.
" Is that why I pay you? To send the children to work for you?" Edwin yelled, but Mr. Eastwood replied in the calmest yet stinging tone "You do not pay me, the church does and it also pays you" and walked away. Mrs Edwin felt very embarrassed, for she had job at been insulted infront of a child.
According to Keith and Katie's escape plan, they were to stay behind while others went to the chapel on Sunday. They packed two camp tents, three gallons of water, a lighter, all of their belongings , plenty of food and a map of the route they were to take, they packed all of the necessary stuff in two backpacks and when Sunday came, they hid away in the boys bathroom, because Mrs. Edwin was prohibited from going in there. There was a secret door that led into a forest. They ran fast with their baggage until Saint Peter's was out of their sight and that was the end of the orphanage lives forever.
