Chapter one
Song yi's pov . Just seeing him stand there, staring at me the way he did, made shivers run down my spine. My body guard, Gao, had been working for me for about a week now, I hated him at first, I was so sure what a royal jerkass he was, and I insisted my dad bring me anyone else but him, dad didn't listen of course, as usual, he felt Gao was the best for the job, and having him changed was out of the question. I hated dad's decision as much as I hated Gao, but it didn't take me a long while to realize why dad had chosen him, and why I had to as well. Gao was no doubt a professional, I had witnessed him fight once, his reputation was indeed deserving of him. Gao wasn't at all the kind of guy I would ever have agreed to date, heck, a week ago I wouldn't have had him come even nine yards to me, yet now, for some reason, my heart skipped a beat each time he looked at me. I know it isn't right, actually, it is far from right, he is a married man after all, I shouldn't be doing this, he is my body guard, and I'm a reputable actress, I should get my mind off this craziness. I tried to keep my balance as I descended down the low marble stairs, it felt like it was minus zero degrees out here, I had goose bumps all over, what one wouldn't do for the red carpet ? even if it meant catching a cold, it was worth showing off my red velvet, Indonesian style, ball gown, which was sleeveless by the way. Everything was going well, I was descending gracefully down the stairs, he wasn't looking at me anymore, and I felt the rhythm of my heart go back to normal, until he turned at the last minute, and our eyes locked. Like they had been glued together, he didn't look away like he used to, I couldn't look away if I wanted to, it was a desperate situation, for me more than it was him, my fingers began to fidget, starting slowly, I tightened my grip on the hem of my gown, squeezing at the delicate edges so much I feared they might've gotten wrinkles on them, and as if that wasn't enough my heart was pounding so loudly I could almost hear the thundering thump thump ram against my chest. What was wrong with me ? Gao had barely said anything, barely done anything, yet here I was sweating and quivering like a fish out of water. This was getting out of hand, I tried to pull my eyes away from Gao, despite the longing I had to keep looking. It was a full moon tonight, perhaps that would be a better distraction, frankly, anything was at this point, but I think I stared for too long, because the next minute I felt my heels give way, the stair that had been under my feet a few seconds ago vanished, I let go of the gown I had been holding, and a shocking gasp ripped the sound right out of my voice, I was falling, with no means of support, falling on the hard marble tiles, any moment now. Instinctively I placed both my hands across my face to protect myself, and then braced for impact. I couldn't have imagined what would have happened if I had slammed my body against the hard stairs, chances were I would have gotten a bunch of cuts and bruises all over my body, might've possibly ended up breaking a thing or two, maybe add a migraine to that equation, my gown would've been completely ruined, not to mention the terrible scars that would've been left on my skin. No one hired an actress with a bunch of scars, my career would've been over in a flash, and all because I got nervous looking at my body guard, what a story that would've been. Fortunately it was a story I never had to tell, not with my bodyguard around of course. It took a minute for me to recover from the shock of almost falling down the stairs, before now, I only pondered the different things that would've happened if I had, now however, that was history, the firm hand on my waist and back made sure of that, warm air grazed my neck now and again, and the tingles returned, but I couldn't see anything, then I remembered, my eyes were still closed, I opened them quickly and yet again right there was another shocker. I was leaning on Gao, ( but of course I was) we were so close that there had barely been any space between us, ( so much for keeping a distance ) my heart was going to explode in my chest if I didn't do something about it, I tilted my head up hesitantly, I couldn't believe this was happening, Gao was starring at me again, his eyes, those big blue hypnotic orbs looked like they could bore crevices into my very soul. His eyes scanned my body for a moment, before he asked " Are you alright ? " I nodded slightly, showing I was, at least I hoped I was, things could've turned out way worse, anyway, the good news was I was fine, and still in one piece, that was more than could be said about my stilettos though. I realized one of the heels had loosened when I tried to stand after Gao let go of me, it was the one on my left foot, it must've broken when I missed my step, the heel bent suddenly, almost making me twist my ankle, and as expected I lost my balance, but luckily, Gao caught me again before I had a chance to fall to the ground. This time was even worse than the last, I fell backwards struggling to keep my balance, Gao reached for me just in time before my head smashed against the pavement, and pulled me to him the next minute, our noses nearly kissed when he did this, and our lips were only an inch away from doing the same, ( nicely.. done.. shoes ) The tension that was building inside me was like a volcano preparing to erupt any minute now, at this point I could feel the hardness of the muscles and abs underneath Gao's tuxedo, as my hands were pressed to his chest, and I temporarily lost focus, until a beam of powerful bright light suddenly flashed at us, forcing both of us to look in its direction temporarily. The light hurt my eyes, making me winch, I pulled my face away from it almost immediately, but not Gao, he continued looking, even though I could tell he strained to see past the blinding light. It was difficult telling who could be behind the sudden flash that was coming from the car's headlight, but whoever it was, he was doing it deliberately. Gao stiffened, ready for a fight if that was what this meant, he wasn't scared of anything. He took one look at me, at my broken heels and then back at the car, right before the light dimmed. " Chong Song yi ! " I suddenly heard someone shout my name, I knew that voice all too well, what was he doing here ?. I turned around immediately, only to find a familiar face leaning out of the car's window, he had a surprised look on his face, and his jaw dropped just by seeing me stand there with Gao. Dong sai fang, son of Kim Sai Dong, owner of Kim Sai Companies, was one of my dear friends, his dad was a multi millionaire, and also a friend of my father, or at least that was what my dad had me believe, dad had tried talking me into starting a relationship with Dong several times, but it just didn't feel right, I liked Dong no doubt, as far as sticking up for me went, Dong did it to the latter, from my homework troubles to drunken nights, he was my guardian angel. Following in his father's footsteps, Dong was learning all he could about his father's business, he was the only heir of his father, and one day he would have to manage the business, Dong was intelligent, loyal, a really caring person and he wasn't bad looking either, there was no doubt in my mind that he would do well, but he just wasn't my type, and as much as my dad wanting a relationship between the two of us went, I knew he only did that to strengthen the partnership he had with Kim Sai, for dad it was nothing more than a business initiative. Even though Dong and I had been friends ever since we were kids, the thought of dating him had never crossed my mind, I knew he had feelings for me, but we couldn't have the relationship he hoped for, he was a good friend, and that was all I wanted him to be. Dong was aware of the attempt that was made on my life a week ago, that had put him in full-time protector overdrive, he had been lingering around and calling me non stop ever since, asking if I felt safe, if anyone bothered me. He even took the liberty of personally rescheduling my appointments and letting go of most of the staff at my place, he didn't leave any stone unturned, two days ago he had been summoned by his father, they had business to take care of , and his father wanted him to be there, the experience was good for him. Dong had blatantly refused to go, he didn't mind the consequences, and that had only made his father furious, Kim was an impatient man, he hated not having his way all the time, and time and time again he had boasted that his no nonsense attitude was one of the reasons why he ended up being as successful as he was today, according to him, emotions and sympathy only drown you in a pool of problems. When I could, I tried as much as possible to avoid the man, I didn't need a shrink to tell me he didn't like me much, especially now, since I was the reason why his son had become so rebellious, still, dad wanted me to marry Dong, I couldn't believe him. Mrs Kim however wasn't as uptight as her husband, not from the beginning at least, she used to be gentle and welcoming when we were kids, however, that changed when she found out about her son's feelings for me, she had gradually become cold and distant. When it came to her son, and the future of the Kim empire, nothing else mattered more. I could understand, she was only being a protective mother, and seeing as Dong was the only heir of the Kim empire, she had to be careful, they were one hell of a family, anyway, that was the most I knew about them, now back to where we were. I had painted an impression so terrible about Gao to Dong the last time he asked about the choice my father made concerning a bodyguard, that I imagine anyone who heard me wouldn't have hesitated to shoot Gao right in the face, so I imagine what Dong must've been thinking, seeing Gao holding me this way, in the middle of the night, I didn't need to read his thoughts, he looked infuriated and from the way he marched towards us, I feared he was ready to slam his fist into Gao's face.
