1- Who Knew Sins Can Be So Beautiful?
Nerilla Melisent Austell
"Miss Melisent Austell, Boss is waiting for you inside." Jayden told me, and I looked at my friend as I nodded my head and stood up from the couch and started to head where the guards wanted to take me.
This was it. My journey from light to darkness had begun again.
Working as an undercover agent is adventurous until things start happening to your target and they start getting suspicious of you. This time, my target was none other than Caspian Vermont, number one man on the Wanted list. The man the government wanted. The man who behaved like a saint in the outside world but had quite a dark reality. Especially behind the secret doors of his office.
And now I was exploring those dark doors.
And suddenly we stopped. The large door in front of me mocked me of the death that would be lurking behind me the moment I opened it. I was finally in the lion's den. And I had to break his teeth and run. Not so hard, right? It's f*****g impossible.
"Mr. Vermont, the lady is here." One of the guards said after knocking on his door.
Silence followed for a minute before Mr. Vermont decided to open his door with a click. He was still sitting behind the desk, a remote in his hand. It must be a mechanical door. Rich people.
And as soon as I entered his office, the door behind me went closed. And I knew there was no turning point. And Nerilla Melisent Austell never turned her back to any of her cases. I am the best our government has.
"Good evening, Mr. Vermont. It's a pleasure to meet you." I said quietly, looking at him, and I heard him clicking something before the lights of his office came into life, making me see him in reality.
Dressed in an expensive suit, Caspian Vermont was sitting behind his desk. He looked young. But mature. His dark brown locks were neatly combed back. His pale skin was glowing under the lights. His dark eyes were penetrating deep into mine. I, for myriad times, got reminded of how sins can be groomed so beautifully.
His face looked like a weapon, sharp, beautifully dangerous to one's sight. The amount of beauty his face had, made it nearly impossible to relate him to the crime world. But who could tell that this beautiful face is the owner of all the sins that run here?
"Miss Austell, were you not warned to keep your eyes low while meeting me? Or do you think you can look into my eyes? Who are you, Miss Austell? Are you worthy enough to make me look at you?" He asked me, and I licked my lips once, straightening my posture. The police training was speaking highly for me.
"I am here to work for you, Mr. Vermont. Or, at least, that's the reason why I was called here. And I don't work under fearful conditions. And if you called me here, inside your office, keeping all the other work aside to meet me, I believe I would be worthy enough to look into your eyes." I said, still staring into his dark eyes.
He tilted his head as he opened the drawer and removed his gun before pointing it at me. My heart almost jumped out of my chest when he pulled the trigger, making a loud noise as the bottles of expensive wine behind him exploded. My body didn't even move an inch. I was trained at the police academy to be ready for such moments.
We were never allowed to show fear.
Mr. Vermont looked at me with an impressed look, though it barely lasted a minute on his face. He was back to his stoic expression.
"Do you not value your life, Miss Austell? Weren't you scared that I could kill you in a minute?" He asked me calmly, placing his gun down and I smiled lightly at his question. That was such a dumb question. Who won't value their life? And I loved my life very much.
"I am not afraid of death, Mr. Vermont. It's not the same as not valuing my life. My life is far more important than anyone can think." I said honestly. Mr. Vermont can smell lies from a distance. I knew it.
When I was getting ready for the mission, I was asked not to lie anything about myself. Neither were my hair colored, nor was I given any kind of lenses to hide my identity. I came here as I was. Raw and honest. Because it was the only way to lure Caspian Vermont.
So, here I was. Dressed in a sweatshirt and a pair of dark leggings. My long hair was pulled in a high ponytail. My boots were soiled with mud. They often say, my face drips with innocence. The one who falls for me never doubts me. I am a good actor. But I never felt what they call love. No-one of them was capable of making my heart beat. No-one.
"Your life is important. How?" He asked me, crossing his arms over his built chest and I smiled at his question, shifting on my feet.
"I save lives. Isn't that enough to explain the importance of my life?" I asked him, and he raised one of his eyebrows, getting up from his chair. And my, my, my..... the man is tall.
"Miss Austell, my world is where we take lives, not save them. Tell me, how old are you?" He asked me, circling me, making me inhale in his scent. He smelled of his money. He smelled..... alluring. My mouth dried when he stopped walking in circles around me and stared into my amber eyes.
He was very close to my petite form.
"Twenty-four, Mr. Vermont." I lied. I was twenty-five. But I didn't want everything to be honest. When he searches for me, certain things should remain unmatched. Small things, of not so great importance. But I wanted him to know something different.
"Don't you think you are too young to be working with the Vermonts? We kill and smuggle to get most of our illegal money. Are you sure you want to waste your life in this illegal and dark life, Miss Austell? There will be instances where you'll get tortured, you'll be bullied. There would be time you would have to kill. Are you sure you're ready for this?" He asked me, and I stared at him, straightening my back.
"Aren't we all a little too young for what we are doing, Mr. Vermont? What are you, thirty, and a Mob boss? I have seen and worked with mafia bosses who are fifty or forty-five. You are too young to control all the mobs. But it's at an early age that it gives you success. Besides, I have been raised here. I got involved at an early age. It's impossible not to get involved now. I know some people, while some know about me. It's not safe for me to not fight anymore." I told him honestly, and he hummed in answer.
"I am twenty-eight, not thirty. And whom have you worked with before, Miss Austell?" He asked me, despite knowing the answer himself. I am sure he is testing me.
"The Dantes and the Willows. I mean I have worked with many mafia families, but precisely for Dantes and the Willows." I answered, and he hummed in answer, scratching his chin.
"If I remember clearly, Dantes' boss is behind bars." Mr. Vermont said, and a dark smile concealed the impassive expression on my face. How can I not remember Dantes going to jail? It was my mission. A great success. It was so hard to get all the proofs against him. I almost lost my left arm and life in the process.
"Yes. He was arrested for smuggling heroin into the ports. And not to mention the diamond smuggling that made headlines a week later after his arrest. Dante is no longer in the race. Such a shame. He.... he paid quite well." I said, and Caspian Vermont's dark gaze was interrogating my soul, trying to unwrap my truths.
But I was a tough player. A very discreet yet open to my enemies. And him being my greatest made it even more important for me to hide my reality from him while giving away literally everything.
I hadn't changed my name, my appearance. My behavior. Vermont can't catch me for lies. I need him to love me. To tell me his darkest, deepest and his ugliest truth. One day, I'll push him behind the jail.
"Weren't you the new addition to his gang when the police became doubtful of his activities? Dantes' gang still blame you for his arrest. What's your take on this, Miss Austell?" He asked me carefully, and I smiled at him.
"New additions are often a trap laid down by the oldest and the most trustworthy members of the boss, Mr. Vermont. I had been working for what..... seven months for Mr. Dante when the police arrested him. It was his most trustworthy member, and best friend, Filas. I warned him about his betrayal but he trusted him over a newcomer. How would I know which port supplied what drug when I was handling the department to train the female recruiters? The rats are always the oldest member of the gang, Mr. Vermont. The one who let you feed on their trust and then stab you back, hiding behind the newcomers."
"Fair enough, Miss Austell. But I am still not very sure why you want to work in the fighting department instead of taking the house job? You'll still be under mafia protection, but a little safer than working as the first-line guard of my gang." Caspian Vermont said, making me tug on the sleeves of my sweatshirt.
"I can't cook. Even as a teenager, I was dependent on others for cooked food. Also, I used to spend a lot of money eating outside. I won't mind if you pay me less than what Dantes paid me, I just need good cooked food all the three times." I said, and he looked askance, his lips curling up, not in a smile, but a sneer as he stared at me. He didn't trust me.
"What about housekeeping?" He asked me, and I couldn't contain the chuckle that escaped my lips as I stared at Caspian Vermont, the deadliest man on the list of gangsters. The man with saint eyes and a devil for heart.
"Are you sure you asked your men to recruit fighters and not wives for you, Mr. Vermont. What is this obsession with seeing women cooking or cleaning all the time?"
His eyes darkened at my dark joke. He was quick to press me against the cool walls of his dark office as he pressed his face closer to mine, leaving only infinitesimal space for me to breathe. If it wouldn't have been for his expensive perfume, I would definitely have minded him invading my personal space.
"If I asked my men to recruit wives for me, Miss Austell, your sharp tongue would have pushed you out of the line in the first round itself. If you dare to use humor with me again, I won't leave this tongue of yours to joke ever again. Are we clear on this arrangement? Because let's be clear here, you either leave my office as my employee or you leave this office dead. So, don't ruin your chances of living considering how you save the lives of people. Yes?" He asked me, making me close my eyes as I shivered at his threat.
This man is far more dangerous than the men I have dealt with.
"Yes, Mr. Vermont."
"Great. Now, you have quite a sharp tongue. Unnecessarily sharp, I must add. Let's see if your skills are as sharp as your tongue. It would be a shame to lose your tongue if you didn't win over our fight, yes? If you want to work for me, then you must be the best to work here. With me. And to be the best, you need to win from me." He said, and I swear I never regretted using my tongue ever before.
Caspian Vermont was the best of the best in the world for Mobs and killing.
And he would understand by my fighting skills that I am a police officer. The undercover.
"What, Miss Austell? Are you scared of never being able to joke again?" He asked me, and I pressed my lips in a thin line.
"I am not scared of death or torture, Mr. Vermont. You'll kill me if I lose. But what if I win, Mr. Vermont?" I asked him confidently, having faith in my police training. I just need to be careful to not look too perfect in his eyes. He would know in a minute, otherwise.
"If you win, you work with me. Not just with my guards. But with me. I'll include you in my very discreet group. But once you get in there, you either leave for hell after death, or you don't leave at all." He said, and I smiled at him.
"Just take care of my food then, Mr. Vermont. I wouldn't want to starve myself." I said, and he looked at me with his eyes darkening with what looked like malice.
"You wouldn't starve if you make it to the end today, Miss Austell. But before that, I need to check for a weapon." He said, and my heart nearly stopped for a split second.
"You won't touch me, Mr. Vermont." I warned him and he laughed as he stared into my eyes.
"I never touch a woman that doesn't belong to me. You don't need to worry about that. I don't w***e around. And Miss Austell, you have nothing that impresses me." Ouch.
"Rythm!" Caspian roared and a timid lady rushed inside his cabin. His eyes darkened as he looked at Rythm, the woman in her late thirties, ready to piss her pants from his stare.
"Check the lady for weapons. And when you feel suspicious, strip her out of that garment." Mr. Vermont instructed her, making my eyes widen as I stared at him with anger and disbelief raging in my blood. Hare dare he!
"I am a fighter! How can you expect me not to bring any weapons with me?" I asked him, and he tilted his head as he opened his palm for me.
"Hand me over your weapon then, Miss Austell." I hesitated as I pointed outside the door.
"The men have my weapons." I said, and he shook his head, asking Rythm silently to check me. He removed a pair of handcuffs from his drawer and handed it to the lady, making me stare at them with distaste.
"Excuse me? Why the handcuffs?" I asked him, and he looked at me with an aphonic expression.
"So that she can check you without your interference. Now be supportive and cooperative, if you don't wish to feel the bullet in your head." He said, and I curled my lips together letting Rythm handcuff me to his table before she awkwardly started to check me around with Mr. Vermont's gaze at me; he was staring at me intently.
"I thought you didn't touch women who don't belong to you."
"I don't, Miss Austell. But I need to see if you are being checked thoroughly," he said.
Rythm's hands were moving down from my neck to my breasts, to my waist, touching every inch of my body, making disgust to crawl on my skin. Mr. Vermont's stare was intense, unwavering as he kept staring at me. It felt like the fingers of Miss/Mrs. Rythm had the touch of Mr. Vermont's gaze.
He was practically touching me, violating me with his gaze.
Her hands rushed down to my pants, making me clench my jaw as I tried not to vomit on his floor when Rythm's hand went to my back, to my rear, before she pushed herself away from me, noticing my ugly stare at her.
"Just a necklace and this pair of earrings, Master Vermont." I snorted when she referred to Mr. Vermont as Master Vermont, making the man glare at me.
"Remove them and place them on my table, Rythm. And maybe you can send them to the forensic lab to check if she is here to spy on me. You can leave now, Rythm. Untie her and leave." I knew he would do this. I was so prepared.
"Of course, Master Vermont."
When Rythm left, I rubbed my wrists. This was the first time I was shackled with handcuffs. It's usually the opposite. I am a police officer! I handcuff criminals. Criminals don't handcuff me.
"You are straight." He said, and I looked at him weirdly. And his point is?
"Rythm's touch disgusted you. If you lose the match, which you would certainly do, and would still be left with the desire to live, I can actually breed you." I choked on my breath as he stared at me with a crooked grin. And the bastard even looked handsome with such an evil smile on his face.
"After all, recruiting wives wasn't that bad of an idea." He said, and I never hated anyone as much as I hated him at that moment.
