Chapter 1
I parked the car in front of the hotel and handed the keys to the valet casually. He looked at the Aston Martin keys in his hand, his fingers trembling slightly. I gave him a friendly smile and patted his shoulder. "Don't be nervous; park it anywhere you see fit."
"Yes, sir," he replied.
Honestly, I was not fond of driving such a flashy car, but it was a college reunion after all. Even after all these years since graduation, I still had an overwhelming desire to prove myself.
Walking into the hotel, I found the room number Kevin had sent me. Before entering, I could hear the chatter inside from a bunch of young men and women, and I recognized a few familiar ones.
"If anyone was famous in college, it had to be Gordon. Everyone knew him."
"Others were famous for being pretty or smart, but he was famous for being poor, hahaha."
I glanced down at my Italian handmade shoes and smirked slightly. 'Do you guys want this kind of fame?'
I was indeed well-known. Just a week into my freshman year, my name was all over the school. When everyone submitted their college tuition, they all had brand-new bills, but I handed over a wad of crumpled notes.
From that day, everyone knew there was a freshman too poor to pay his tuition. I painstakingly counted out fifty one-dollar bills for the fifty-dollar fee. To earn money, I had done countless part-time jobs after high school. After deducting transportation and tuition, there wasn't much left.
Later, the guys in my class gave me the nickname "the Poor Gordon". Before college, I never felt ashamed of being poor. Growing up in a remote town where everyone lived similarly modest lives, my poverty wasn't so noticeable.
But this city was overwhelmingly big; I could never catch up with those above me.
Remembering the tears I shed in college because of poverty, I smoothed out the wrinkles on my suit and pushed open the door gently. The lively conversation paused momentarily as I entered.
Kevin stood up and waved me over. "Gordon, sit next to me."
I looked in his direction and noticed the woman on the other side of the empty seat immediately. Her long, wavy hair and rosy lips made her beauty even more striking with time.
Like me, Chloe was quite famous back then. She was the campus belle, while I was a joke. Yet, like any love-struck boy, I had a crush on her for four years.
Chloe noticed my gaze and gave me a faint smile. During our four years in college, she never once spared me a glance. Her sudden friendliness made me wonder if she knew my current status. But I had never attended any interviews about my company.
Filled with confusion, I still walked over to Kevin, my only friend from college.
Chloe suddenly stood up, blocking my path before I could sit down. Her face flushed like a shy schoolgirl as she hesitated to meet my eyes. "Gordon, I've liked you for a long time. I was too shy to tell you back then. Is it too late to say it now?"
I felt no emotional stirrings; those feelings I had for her had long faded. I was just wondering who had revealed my identity. I hadn't even told Kevin about it.
But as I was lost in thought for a few seconds, Chloe's expression changed. Her shy smile disappeared, replaced by a mocking look. She brushed her hair back and gestured to everyone in the room. "See, I told you, all I had to do was give him orders, and he'd do as I said."
