CHAPTER FIVE – Fear Has a Name
“The most terrifying people are not the ones who scream in anger… but the ones who stay calm while destroying everything.”
---
The drive back was silent.
Not peaceful.
Not comfortable.
Heavy.
---
Jessy sat beside Kay, staring out the window while the city lights disappeared one after another.
But her mind wasn’t on the road.
It was on the way people looked at him tonight.
The fear.
The respect.
The caution.
---
And Elena’s words.
Things like this don’t end well.
---
Jessy swallowed slowly.
“What exactly do you do?”
Kay didn’t answer immediately.
That alone made her nervous.
---
“You ask too many questions,” he said finally.
“And you avoid too many answers.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
---
Jessy turned to face him fully.
“People are scared of you.”
A pause.
“They should be.”
---
Her chest tightened.
The way he said it—
Like he accepted it.
Like he didn’t care.
---
“Why?” she asked quietly.
Kay looked out the window this time.
“Because fear keeps people honest.”
Jessy frowned.
“No. Fear makes people dangerous.”
---
For the first time that night—
Kay actually looked at her.
Really looked at her.
---
“Who taught you that?” he asked.
Jessy blinked slightly.
“My mother.”
Silence filled the car.
Then—
“She was smart.”
The softness in his voice surprised her.
---
Jessy looked down at her hands.
“She died when I was fourteen.”
Kay’s expression changed slightly.
Not pity.
Something quieter.
---
“I’m sorry.”
Jessy looked up quickly.
The words sounded strange coming from him.
Too human.
---
“You apologize?” she asked softly.
Kay leaned back slightly.
“When it matters.”
---
Jessy didn’t know what to say after that.
---
The car entered the mansion gates.
The large iron doors closing behind them made Jessy’s stomach tighten again.
Still trapped.
Still here.
---
When they entered the house, the atmosphere felt different.
Tense.
Even the staff moved carefully.
---
Kay noticed it immediately.
“What happened?” he asked coldly.
One of the guards stepped forward.
“There was movement near the east gate.”
Jessy frowned slightly.
“Movement?”
“We handled it,” the guard added quickly.
---
Kay’s face darkened instantly.
“Handled it how?”
The guard hesitated.
That hesitation alone changed the air.
---
Kay stepped forward slowly.
Dangerously calm.
“I asked you a question.”
“We caught one of them,” the guard answered quickly. “The others escaped.”
Jessy’s stomach twisted.
One of them?
---
Kay’s eyes hardened.
“Where is he?”
“In the basement.”
---
Jessy froze.
Basement?
---
Kay loosened the cuff of his sleeve slightly.
A small movement.
But somehow terrifying.
---
“I’ll deal with it.”
---
Jessy watched the guards step aside immediately.
No argument.
No hesitation.
---
And suddenly—
She understood.
The fear wasn’t fake.
---
Kay turned slightly.
His eyes landed on her.
“Go upstairs.”
Jessy opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because something in his expression warned her not to argue.
---
But as he walked away—
Curiosity pulled harder than fear.
---
And Jessy made her first real mistake.
---
She followed him.
---
Quietly.
Carefully.
Keeping distance between them.
---
The deeper they went into the house, the colder it became.
The lights dimmer.
The silence heavier.
---
Until—
She heard it.
---
A scream.
---
Jessy stopped breathing for a second.
---
Another scream followed.
Pain.
Real pain.
---
Her heart slammed against her ribs.
What was happening down there?
---
She moved closer slowly.
And then—
She saw it.
---
A man tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Bleeding.
Terrified.
---
And Kay standing in front of him.
Calm.
Perfectly calm.
---
Jessy’s body went cold.
---
“You were seen near my property,” Kay said quietly.
The man shook violently.
“I-I was just delivering a message—”
“From who?”
Silence.
---
Kay crouched slowly in front of him.
No anger.
No shouting.
That somehow made it worse.
---
“I don’t repeat myself.”
The man’s breathing became uneven.
“I can’t say—”
Kay grabbed his jaw suddenly.
Hard.
The man cried out.
---
Jessy flinched.
---
“You came into my territory,” Kay said softly. “Near my house.”
His eyes darkened.
“Near her.”
---
Jessy’s breath caught.
---
The man panicked instantly.
“It wasn’t about the girl! I swear!”
---
Kay went still.
Dangerously still.
---
“Interesting,” he murmured.
“I didn’t mention a girl.”
---
The man realized his mistake too late.
---
Jessy felt fear crawl up her spine.
Not because of the bleeding man.
Because of Kay.
---
The calmness.
The control.
The way danger lived inside him so naturally.
---
Kay stood slowly.
Then—
Without warning—
He punched the man hard enough to knock the chair sideways.
---
Jessy gasped quietly.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
---
Kay turned instantly.
Their eyes met.
---
Silence.
---
Jessy’s heart stopped.
---
For one second—
Nobody moved.
---
Then Kay spoke.
Quietly.
“Come here.”
---
Fear rooted her in place.
---
“Jessy.”
His voice hardened slightly.
“Now.”
---
Her legs moved before her brain could think.
She walked toward him slowly.
Carefully.
---
When she got close enough, Kay looked at her for a long moment.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Just… intense.
---
“You disobeyed me.”
Jessy swallowed hard.
“I-I just—”
“You followed me.”
---
The bleeding man groaned behind them.
Jessy tried not to look.
---
“I was worried,” she admitted softly.
The words surprised both of them.
---
Kay stared at her.
Something unreadable flashing through his eyes again.
---
Then his expression hardened.
“This is not a place for you.”
Jessy looked around shakily.
“No kidding.”
---
For the first time—
A small breath escaped him.
Not quite a laugh.
But close.
---
Jessy blinked slightly.
Did he almost smile?
---
“Go upstairs,” he said quietly this time.
Less cold.
More tired.
---
Jessy hesitated.
Then—
“What are you going to do to him?”
---
The room became silent again.
---
Kay looked at the man on the floor.
Then back at her.
---
“What I have to.”
---
Her chest tightened.
“You’re going to kill him?”
---
Kay didn’t answer.
And somehow—
That was worse.
---
Jessy stared at him.
Really stared.
Trying to understand what kind of man stood in front of her.
Monster.
Protector.
Danger.
Safety.
---
Maybe all of them.
---
“Jessy.”
She looked up again.
---
“You shouldn’t see this side of me.”
---
The strange thing was—
He almost sounded serious.
Like he actually meant it.
---
But it was too late.
Because she already had.
---
And now—
She could never unsee it.
---
“Every dangerous man has two faces… the one the world fears, and the one he hides from the person he loves.”
