Chapter 4: The Proposal

1003 Words
Seresa found herself in the passenger seat of a stranger's car, the dull hum of the engine filling the silence between them. Despite the unease that gnawed at her gut, she was consumed by a sense of desperate determination to escape, to flee from the suffocating reality of her own engagement party. Glancing sideways at the man behind the wheel, Seresa felt a surge of apprehension. She knew nothing about him – not his name, not his intentions, not even the direction in which they were headed. But in that moment, she didn't care. All she wanted was to put as much distance between herself and the chaos she had left behind. "What's your name?" she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty. The man spared her a brief glance, his eyes dark and unreadable. "You can call me... Julius," he replied cryptically, his voice low and gravelly. "How about you? Your name?" he asked. "Seresa." I answered. Seresa couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye, but she pushed aside her misgivings. Right now, he was her only lifeline, her only chance at freedom. As the car sped down the darkened highway, Seresa's thoughts raced a mile a minute. She couldn't believe she had just left her own engagement party with a stranger, but the sense of liberation that washed over her was intoxicating. Leaning back in her seat, she stole another glance at Julius, the mysterious man who had come to her aid. His features were obscured by the shadows of the car's interior, lending him an air of enigma that only heightened Seresa's curiosity. "Where are we going?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Julius remained silent for a moment, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "Anywhere you want," he finally replied, his voice calm and reassuring. Seresa couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope at his words. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she had the opportunity to chart her own course, to break free from the constraints of her past and forge a new path forward. As the miles stretched on, Seresa found herself lost in thought, contemplating the possibilities that lay ahead. Despite the uncertainty of her situation, she couldn't shake the feeling of excitement that bubbled within her, like a flame reignited after years of being smothered. With each passing moment, Seresa felt herself growing bolder, more determined to seize control of her own destiny. And as the first light of dawn began to paint the sky in hues of pink and gold, she knew that her journey was only just beginning. Suddenly, Julius spoke again, his voice cutting through the silence like a knife. "I have a proposal for you, Seresa," he said, his tone serious. Seresa turned to him, her heart pounding in her chest. "What kind of proposal?" she asked, her voice tinged with apprehension. Julius met her gaze with a steely resolve. "Marry me," he said simply. Seresa's eyes widened in shock at his unexpected offer. "Marry you?" she repeated, her mind reeling with disbelief. Julius nodded, his expression unreadable. "Yes, marry me," he affirmed. Seresa's mind reeled at Julius's unexpected proposal. The words echoed in her ears, each syllable sending shockwaves through her already tumultuous thoughts. "Marry you?" she repeated incredulously, her voice tinged with disbelief. "But... I just ran away from my own engagement party because I didn't want to get married!" Julius met her gaze with a steady intensity, his expression unwavering. "I know," he replied calmly. "But this would be different. A marriage of convenience, a temporary arrangement to suit both our needs. Let's say for a year" Seresa's head spun with the weight of his words. She struggled to comprehend the gravity of what he was suggesting – a union born out of necessity rather than love, a contract rather than a commitment. "But why me?" she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty. "Why now? In the middle of running away from my engagement? Seriously?" Julius regarded her with a thoughtful expression, as if weighing his words carefully before speaking. "Because I see something in you, Seresa," he said softly. "Strength, determination, resilience. Qualities that I believe would complement my own." Seresa felt a surge of emotion welling up inside her – confusion and apprehension. "But... a year?" she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "What happens after that?" Julius's gaze never wavered as he met her eyes, his expression grave yet resolute. "After that, we go our separate ways," he said simply. "No strings attached, no obligations. Just two people who helped each other when they needed it most." Seresa's mind raced as she grappled with the enormity of Julius's proposal. It was a whirlwind of emotions – confusion, apprehension, but also a glimmer of hope. Yet, she knew she couldn't make such a monumental decision in haste. "I... I need time to think," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "This is a lot to take in, Julius." Julius nodded understandingly, his gaze unwavering. "Of course," he replied, his tone gentle yet firm. "Take all the time you need. But know that the offer stands, whenever you're ready." With a heavy sigh, Seresa leaned back in her seat, her thoughts swirling like a tempest in her mind. She needed clarity, needed to weigh the pros and cons of such a drastic proposition. But amidst the chaos, a small voice whispered to her, urging her to consider the possibility of a new beginning, of freedom from the chains that bound her. As the miles stretched out before them, Seresa found herself lost in thought, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions and unanswered questions. And so, with resolve in her heart and uncertainty in her mind, Seresa made a silent vow to herself – to take the time she needed, to weigh her options carefully, and to choose the path that would lead her toward the freedom she so desperately sought.
