Chapter 1: Trapped in Tradition
Seresa sat at the worn dinner table, her heart heavy with the weight of her parents' expectations. The small, cramped kitchen felt suffocating, the tension in the air thick and stifling. She pushed her meager portion of food around her plate, her appetite long gone. "Seresa, sweetheart," her mother began, her voice strained, "we really need to discuss your future." Seresa braced herself for the familiar conversation, her stomach churning with apprehension. She glanced at Marcus, her younger brother, who sat beside her, his expression a mixture of sympathy and resignation. "Why do we have to talk about this now?" Marcus piped up, his voice tinged with frustration. He shot Seresa a pleading look, silently urging her to intervene. Their father sighed, running a weary hand through his hair. "Marcus, we've talked about this. Your sister needs to start thinking about her future." "But what about now?" Marcus insisted, his tone growing more desperate. "Can't we just focus on getting through today?" Their mother's patience wore thin, her voice rising in frustration. "We can't keep burying our heads in the sand, Marcus. Seresa needs to start planning for her future, whether she likes it or not." Seresa felt a surge of anger rising within her, her hands trembling with emotion. "And what future do you have in mind, Mom?" she shot back, her voice tinged with bitterness. "Marrying off your daughter to some rich prick just to make ends meet?" Her mother's face paled, her eyes widening in shock. "Seresa, that's not fair," she protested, her voice trembling. "We're just trying to do what's best for you." Seresa scoffed, her lip curling in disdain. "And what's best for me, Mom? Selling myself to the highest bidder?" she retorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Their father slammed his fist against the table, his own frustration boiling over. "Watch your mouth, young lady," he growled, his eyes flashing with anger. "We're trying to give you an opportunity here, and all you can do is throw it back in our faces." Seresa felt her resolve waver, a knot forming in her throat. She wanted to scream, to lash out at her parents for their betrayal, but the words caught in her throat. She knew she was trapped – trapped in a life she never asked for, with no way out. With a heavy sigh, she lowered her head, defeated. "Fine," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'll do it. I'll marry him." Her parents exchanged a knowing glance, their expressions filled with concern. "Seresa, sweetheart," her mother began gently, "you know we only want what's best for you. And Louise... well, he may not be perfect, but at least he's stable. He can provide for you, give you the life you deserve." Seresa felt a surge of anger rising within her at the mention of Louise's name. Her ex-boyfriend, the cheating bastard who had broken her heart time and time again. How could her parents even consider forcing her to marry him? "But he's not what I want," Seresa protested, her voice trembling with emotion. "He's not who I love." Her parents exchanged a troubled glance, their expressions filled with uncertainty. "Seresa, we know you're upset," her father began, his voice gentle. "But sometimes in life, we have to make sacrifices for the greater good. And marrying Louise... well, it may not be ideal, but it's the best option we have right now." Seresa felt a surge of frustration welling up inside her. How could her parents be so blind? Didn't they see that marrying Louise would only bring her more pain and heartache? Didn't they see that she deserved so much more than that? But as she looked into their weary eyes, Seresa felt a flicker of doubt creeping into her mind. Maybe they were right. Maybe she was being selfish for wanting more. Maybe she should just accept her fate and move on. But deep down, in the depths of her soul, Seresa knew that she could never be truly happy with Louise. She could never settle for a life of mediocrity and compromise. She deserved passion, and love, and everything that Louise could never give her. With a heavy heart, Seresa pushed her chair back and stood up from the table. "I need some time to think," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Please... just give me some time." As she left the kitchen, her parents watched her go, their hearts heavy with worry. They knew that Seresa was strong-willed and determined, and they feared what she might do if they pushed her too hard. But deep down, they also knew that they were running out of time. If Seresa didn't agree to marry Louise soon, their family would be ruined – financially, socially, and emotionally. And so, as Seresa disappeared down the hallway, her parents exchanged a troubled glance, their minds filled with worry and uncertainty. For they knew that the path ahead would not be easy, and that the choices they made now would shape their family's future for years to come. --- As Seresa retreated to her room, her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. She paced back and forth, her heart pounding with uncertainty. How could she possibly go through with marrying Louise when every fiber of her being rebelled against the idea? The memories of their tumultuous relationship flooded her mind – the late-night arguments, the broken promises, the searing pain of betrayal. She had loved Louise once, with all her heart, but now all that remained was a bitter taste of regret. But as she stared out the window into the darkness, Seresa knew that she couldn't let her parents dictate her future any longer. She couldn't let their misguided notions of tradition and stability trap her in a life of misery and regret. With a steely resolve, Seresa made a decision. She would find a way to break free from the chains that bound her, no matter the cost. She would carve out her own path, on her own terms, and she wouldn't let anyone – not her parents, not Louise, not anyone – stand in her way. But as she lay awake in bed, her mind racing with plans and possibilities, a nagging doubt crept into her heart. What if she couldn't do it? What if she wasn't strong enough to defy her parents' expectations? What if she ended up alone, with nothing to show for her defiance but a lifetime of regret? But deep down, in the depths of her soul, Seresa knew that she couldn't turn back now. She had tasted freedom, if only for a fleeting moment, and she couldn't let it slip through her fingers. She had to fight for her happiness, no matter the odds. With that thought echoing in her mind, Seresa finally allowed herself to drift off to sleep, her dreams filled with visions of a future filled with hope, and love, and endless possibility.
