CHAPTER 1: The First Impression
EMILY'S P.O.V
I quickly stepped out of the bustling streets of Crescent City and into the sleek, modern lobby of PetroCorp Headquarters. The entrance was guarded by a couple of men in black uniform. The building stood magnificently in the middle of the town, it's beautiful glass walls giving it an aesthetic look with the skies reflection.
As I walked quickly nearing the entrance, I was stopped by one of the security men who allowed me in after I answered a proper security check.
Adjusting my outfit and straightening out my hair with the palm of my hand, my heart pounded with nervous anticipation as i approached the reception desk, where a perky receptionist greeted me with a warm smile.
"Welcome to PetroCorp. How can I help you?" the receptionist whose blonde hair was packed in a neat sleek back bun and dressed in a black skirt and white shirt asked.
"I'm here for an interview with Mr. Nightshade," I replied, trying to keep the nerves out of my voice.
The receptionist nodded and picked up the phone to announce my arrival. My eyes wandered around the sophisticated interior, silver and gold linings designed the walls. As I got lost in the beauty of the environment, the sound of footsteps drew me back to reality.
A tall, impeccably dressed man in a maroon coloured three piece suit emerged from the elevator on the left, his piercing gaze locking onto mine. My breath hitched as I drank in his attractive features. His short black hair, well defined jaw line, dazzling blue eyes, moist pink lips and the outline of his muscles flexed under his expensive suit.
"Ms. Parker, I presume?" he said, extending his hand. My nervousness was on another level.
I shook it firmly, trying to ignore the tingling sensation that shot through me at his touch. "Yes, that's me."
"Excellent", he turned a bit to the receptionist and said," I want the file containing this month's contracts and business plans for the Chicago hotel on my desk in an hour*
"Okay sir", she replied curtly and turned around to get busy while his gaze met mine again.
"Right this way, please," Mr. Nightshade said, leading me towards his office. I walked briskly after the man as he led the way to what looked like a private elevator. We got in and it took us to the last floor. The man led me to a golden double door.
And as we entered, I couldn't help but be impressed by the opulence of the room. The walls were adorned with priceless works of art, and a panoramic view of the city stretched out before them.
The large brown mahogany desk sat proudly Infront of me, dominating the space. File folders and papers sat neatly around the desk, there was a silver Mac and two iphones there as well. There was also a gold name plate labelled, Mr. Nightshade.
"Please, have a seat," Mr. Nightshade said, gesturing to a plush leather chair opposite his desk while he took his.
I sat down, my heart pounding with anticipation. My hand gripped my bag as I tried to cool down. I still could not believe that I was actually sitting here, interviewing for the position of personal assistant to the CEO.
"So, Ms. Parker, tell me about yourself," Mr. Nightshade said, his gaze on me never wavering. My confidence kicked in and I launched into my prepared spiel, detailing my previous work experience and qualifications.
"I've never worked in an Oil and gas industry before but I have experience being an assistant to the manager of a business firm". I spoke briefly. I couldn't help but feel that something was off about Mr. Nightshade, there was something I couldn't quite put my finger on. The way his eyes turned a shade darker when I licked my lips. The way his gaze followed by every move like a hunter and it's prey. I handed him my Curriculum Vitae and he intently read through it.
I watched his facial expressions and body movements. He exuded so much confidence and poise that looking at him made me feel intimidated.
"From what I've been able to gather from your CV, It's safe to say that I can trust you with organisation of meetings and documents" he took a brief look at me with a raised brow.
"Yes of course, Mr. Nightshade", I replied lowly clearing my throat.
My interview was quickly drawing to a close. And I could tell that Mr. Nightshade was impressed by my credentials, but there was still something about him that made me uneasy.
He took some papers from my folder and handed it back to me.
"Well, Ms. Parker, I must say, you've certainly made quite an impression," Mr. Nightshade said, leaning back in his chair and swiveling a bit with his hand holding his jaw smoothly.
"Thank you, Mr. Nightshade. I really appreciate the opportunity," I replied, forcing a smile.
"Before you go, there's something I'd like to discuss with you," he said, his voice low and urgent.
My heart raced as I met his intense gaze, wondering what could possibly be so important that he needed to speak to me about.
The tension in the room was palpable as i waited for Mr. Nightshade to speak. I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears as I tried to maintain my composure.
Finally, Mr. Nightshade broke the silence. "Ms. Parker, I couldn't help but notice that you seem... different from the other applicants we've interviewed."
I raised an eyebrow, unsure of how to respond. "Different? In what way, exactly?"
Mr. Nightshade leaned forward, his eyes narrowing slightly. "There's a spark in you, Ms. Parker. A fire that I haven't seen in anyone else. Tell me, what is it that you truly desire?"
The question caught me off guard, and I hesitated for a moment before responding. "I... I suppose what I desire most is to make a difference. To leave my mark on the world in some way."
Mr. Nightshade nodded thoughtfully. "A noble ambition, indeed. And do you believe you could achieve that here, at Nightshade Enterprises?"
I considered his question carefully. Despite the strange atmosphere surrounding Mr. Nightshade, I couldn't deny that the opportunity to work for such a prestigious company was tempting. "I believe I could, yes. If given the chance."
Mr. Nightshade smiled, a hint of something unreadable flickering in his eyes. He stretched his right hand towards me, "Very well, Ms. Parker. Consider this your chance. Welcome to Petrocorp Industries."
"I've got the job? Oh my God, Thank you so much sir. You won't be disappointed", i said excitedly as I shook his hand. There's that tingling again and i look up at him to see if he felt it too. His blue eyes literally stare into my soul and my cheeks warm up in a light pink blush as I retract her hand.
Mr. Nightshade cleared his throat and hands me a form paper and a couple of documents to sign. When I was done I returned it to him.
He put the papers in a folder and returned it to his desk drawer. Returning to his seat, I felt his warm demeanor change into a cold one and an eerie chill swept past me.
"I want you here by 9am, first thing tomorrow morning. A cup of black coffee on my desk. The room on the left is your office. Lateness will not be tolerated. Any deformation of character and act of unprofessionalism will get you fired",he stated with a short glance at the silver door on the left wall of his office.
I nodded with a poker face on to make me look professional.
"No slacking during work hours. No intimate relationships with fellow employees and no emotions from your personal life should affect your work", giving me darker look and leaned forward towards me, "Ms. Parker, My number one rule is that I hate to repeat myself" his voice dropped an octave. My nerves were literally everywhere by now.
"Okay sir. Thank you", we shook hands again and I exited his office.
