The night was rough. Courtney didn’t sleep well and neither did I. She cried and fussed and nothing I did seemed to calm her. “You want your mama, don’t you?” I asked as I held her in my arms while she wailed. Her little face was red and her cries seemed anguished. I hoped she wasn’t sick. Olivia hadn’t put any medicine in Courtney’s bag or told me that she was ill. I had no idea what to do. Finally, in desperation, I loaded her into her car seat, strapped her in the car, and hit the road. I was going to take her back to Olivia, but as soon as I hit the Garden State Parkway, Courtney’s crying stopped and she fell asleep, so I turned around and drove back to the house where I put her down in the master bedroom and she slept peacefully through the night.
