Chapter 1: Reluctant Partners
Lena Carter didn’t need anyone. (A reckless but highly skilled private security agent; sharp-tongued, independent, and emotionally guarded). The rhythmic pounding of her boots against the pavement echoed through the dimly lit underground parking garage. Her gun was steady in her hand, the cool metal familiar against her palm. A low hum of adrenaline coursed through her veins, sharpening her focus as she scanned the rows of sleek, black cars for movement. "Target is secure. Exiting the perimeter now," she said into her earpiece. "Copy that." Harper Quinn’s (Lena’s quirky and brilliant best friend; the team's tech genius) voice crackled over the line, bright and efficient despite the tension. "Backup’s thirty seconds out." Lena didn’t need backup. She never had. But Harper had learned long ago that Lena’s independence wasn’t up for negotiation. Lena reached her black SUV and tugged open the driver’s side door. Just as she slid behind the wheel, her phone vibrated in her pocket. Frowning, she pulled it out and checked the screen. _PHONE RINGS_ Director Holt (tall and sharp-eyed, with graying hair and a calm authority that demanded respect.) Her boss didn’t usually call unless it was important. "Lena," Holt’s deep voice came through the line, calm but authoritative. "New assignment. High-priority client." "I'm listening." "You’ve heard of Sophia Hayes?" Lena’s brow furrowed. "The socialite? Daughter of Richard Hayes?" "That’s the one. She’s in trouble. Marco Voss is after her." Lena’s jaw tightened at the mention of Voss’s name. He was a ghost in the city’s underworld—a man whose influence seeped into every corner of organized crime. Ruthless. Untouchable. "And why would Voss be interested in Sophia Hayes?" Lena asked. "That’s what you and Knight are going to find out." Lena’s spine stiffened. "What do you mean, ‘Knight’?" Holt’s pause was too long. "You’ll be partnered with Ethan Knight on this one." Lena’s hand tightened around the steering wheel. "You’ve got to be kidding me." "You two are the best we have. If anyone can keep Sophia alive, it’s you and Knight." Lena’s mouth curled in distaste. Ethan Knight (A charming and strategic top agent; Lena’s rival) was the last person she wanted to work with. Cold. Calculating. Too smooth for his own good. And cocky. God, was he cocky. "Holt," she started. "Non-negotiable, Carter." The line went dead. Lena tossed her phone onto the passenger seat and swore under her breath. An hour later, Lena stood in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of the security firm’s headquarters, arms crossed over her chest as Ethan Knight strolled in like he owned the place. "Late as usual," Lena said, not bothering to hide the disdain in her voice. Ethan’s mouth twitched into a lazy smirk as he slid into the seat opposite her. "It’s called making an entrance." Lena narrowed her eyes. "Try making it on time." Ethan’s gaze flicked over her, sharp and assessing. He was too good-looking for his own good—dark hair, tailored suit, and that irritating glint in his hazel eyes that suggested he knew exactly how much he got under her skin. "So," Ethan said, leaning back in his chair with the easy confidence of someone who knew he was the best in the room. "Sophia Hayes. What do we know?" Lena’s jaw clenched. "Not much. But Voss wants her alive, which means she knows something valuable." "And we have to keep her breathing long enough to find out what it is." Ethan’s smile sharpened. "Should be fun." Lena scowled. "This isn’t a game." Ethan’s eyes darkened. "No. It’s not." Director Holt entered the room, cutting the tension between them. His gaze swept over both of them with the cool detachment of someone used to managing egos. "Glad to see you two are getting reacquainted," he said dryly. "Sophia’s at her estate under guard. You’ll head there tonight. Keep her safe. Find out why Voss wants her. And try not to kill each other in the process." Ethan rose from his chair with fluid grace. "No promises." Lena watched him leave, her teeth grinding together. This was going to be a nightmare. Sophia Hayes lived like royalty. Her estate sprawled across ten acres of land, hidden behind a high wrought-iron gate and state-of-the-art security. The mansion was all gleaming marble, floor-to-ceiling windows, and expensive art that screamed old money. Lena surveyed the perimeter as they approached the main entrance. "Security’s tight," she murmured. "Not tight enough if Voss is interested," Ethan replied. A tall man in a crisp black suit opened the door for them. "Ms. Hayes is waiting in the sitting room." Sophia was perched on a cream-colored sofa, legs crossed, a glass of white wine dangling between her manicured fingers. She looked every inch the socialite—perfectly tousled blonde hair, a designer dress that cost more than Lena’s car, and an expression that was equal parts boredom and mild annoyance. "You’re the bodyguards?" Sophia’s tone was light, but her blue eyes sharpened as they swept over them. "Protection detail," Lena corrected. Sophia’s gaze lingered on Ethan. "Nice suit." Ethan smiled faintly. "Thanks. It’s tailored." Lena rolled her eyes. "We need to know if anyone’s contacted you or threatened you directly." Sophia sighed and set down her glass. "My father’s enemies have always been a problem, but this is the first time anyone’s made it personal." "How so?" Sophia’s jaw tightened. "I received a package yesterday. No return address. Inside was a black playing card with a red ‘V’ on it." Lena’s gaze sharpened. "Voss’s signature." Ethan’s smirk disappeared. "Did it say anything?" Sophia’s hand trembled slightly. "Just a note. ‘Time’s up.’" Lena exchanged a look with Ethan. This wasn’t just about intimidation—Voss was making his move. "You’ll stay here tonight," Lena said. "We’ll monitor all communication. No one comes in or out without clearance." Sophia’s gaze turned wary. "How serious is this?" "Very," Ethan said softly. They set up in the security room overlooking the estate’s grounds. Lena stood by the window, watching the perimeter through night-vision binoculars. Ethan sat at the console, monitoring the camera feeds. "You think she knows more than she’s letting on?" Ethan asked. "Definitely." Lena’s brow furrowed. "She’s hiding something." "And Voss thinks it’s worth killing her over." A flicker of movement caught Lena’s eye. "Hold on." She adjusted the binoculars. A shadow moved along the east fence line. "East side. Two figures. Armed," Lena said. Ethan was already moving. "Let’s go." They reached the east wing just as the glass shattered. "Down!" Lena shouted, shoving Sophia to the ground. Gunfire erupted. Lena returned fire, her shots precise. Ethan was at her side, cutting down the intruders with cold efficiency. When the dust settled, three bodies lay crumpled on the floor. Sophia sat up, shaking. "They—they tried to kill me." "No," Ethan said grimly. "They tried to kidnap you." Lena crouched beside one of the attackers, pulling back his sleeve. A tattoo on his wrist: a red ‘V.’ "This was a message," Lena said. "Voss isn’t going to stop." Sophia’s breath hitched. "Then what do we do?" Lena’s gaze met Ethan’s. For once, they were on the same page. "We take the fight to him," Ethan said. Lena smiled coldly. "Now you’re speaking my language."
