Chapter 1: The Morning Song
The sun peeked over the hills, painting the sky with soft oranges and pinks. Birds chirped sweet tunes in the trees, and a cool breeze gently rustled the leaves. On the edge of a quiet village, in a tiny red-roofed house, lived a bright-eyed girl named Katie.
Katie was five years old, and though she was small, she had something very big to care for—her very own little farm.
Each morning, as soon as the sunlight touched her windows, Katie would hop out of bed with a big smile on her face. She wore her favorite orange shirt with blue overalls, slipped on her yellow boots, and grabbed her straw hat from the peg.
“Time to see my farm friends!” she said, twirling out the door.
Down the dirt path she skipped, humming her morning song:
🎵
"Good morning, sun, good morning sky,
Hello to the birds flying by!
To moo and baa and cluck and neigh,
Let’s start another happy day!"
🎵
At the end of the path stood her little farm—cozy, cheerful, and full of life. A white wooden fence wrapped around the fields. There were patches of green vegetables, bright red strawberries, and a flower bed where bees danced from bloom to bloom.
But best of all were the animals.
First to greet her was Snowy the sheep, soft and fluffy as a pillow.
“Baaa!” Snowy bleated happily, rubbing her woolly head against Katie’s hand.
“Good morning, Snowy!” Katie laughed, scratching behind her ears. “Did you sleep well?”
Next came Moo-Moo, the gentle brown cow, who gave a slow, friendly “Moooooo” and blinked her big eyes at Katie.
“Good morning, Moo-Moo! Ready for breakfast?”
Katie headed to the chicken coop. Inside, the hens clucked and flapped as they waited excitedly.
“Here’s your grain, girls!” Katie said, sprinkling feed. “And thank you for the eggs!”
Katie collected three smooth, warm eggs and placed them gently in a basket.
Just beyond the coop stood her shiny little red tractor. It wasn’t too fast or too loud, but it helped her carry water and baskets from one place to another. She patted the steering wheel proudly.
“Ready for another fun day, Red?” she giggled.
With everyone fed and happy, Katie made her way to the garden beds. There were plump orange carrots, rows of leafy lettuce, and tiny tomatoes still green but growing fast. Katie knelt down and tugged gently at one of the carrots.
Pop! Out came a bright orange carrot with a curly green top.
“Perfect for lunch,” she whispered.
Suddenly, she heard a rustling in the garden. She turned her head and gasped.
A tiny brown rabbit peeked out from behind the sunflowers. It had long ears, twitchy whiskers, and a nose that wiggled fast. In its mouth was—Katie squinted—a strawberry!
“Oh!” she said softly, tiptoeing closer. “You like strawberries too?”
The rabbit froze.
“Don’t be scared. You’re welcome here,” Katie said, kneeling down. “I’ll plant some just for you.”
The rabbit stared at her for a moment… then nibbled the strawberry, slowly and calmly.
Katie grinned. “I’ll call you Nibble.”
And just like that, the farm had a new friend.
