The tiny apartment where Camila and Anna lived was bathed in a warm golden glow as the sun sank low in the sky. A familiar background to their everyday existence was created by the quiet hum of the air conditioner and the faint sound of traffic outside. The whirlwind of medical expenses and the dread of her sister's illness consumed Camila's thoughts as she stood in the small kitchen, her hands busy slicing breakfast vegetables. “Won't you be at work today?" Anna inquired, still shocked to find Cami in the kitchen at 7 a.m. when she was supposed to have left before 7:30 a.m. Camila sighed, "I am, I just need to finish this meal quickly so you can take your meds while I take mine to work." "I can make breakfast myself; you don't have to," Anna said, adding that she was running late. "No, I'm determined to make it. As the doctor advised, you shouldn't put too much strain on yourself. I hope you don't do anything physically demanding when I'm gone," Camila said. It was 6 p.m. Camila returned slightly later than usual. "What caused your tardiness?" Anna asked, her face expressing concern. She claimed, "Madam Jessica utilized that as a punishment for starting work late today." After a while, it was nearly 7:30 p.m., and since Camila had gotten some sleep, it was time to head to the kitchen and prepare dinner. "Can you assist me with this, Cami?" Anna's voice interrupted her daydream. When Camila turned around, she saw her younger sister seated on the couch with a pile of medical documents in front of her. Anna's hair was thinning from the treatments, and her once-bright complexion had turned pallid. There was a glimmer of hope in her eyes, but her soul remained unbroken. “Of course, Anna. What do you need?” Camila wiped her hands on a dish towel and moved to sit beside her sister. The papers were a mix of hospital bills and treatment options, each one a reminder of the financial burden that weighed heavily on Camila’s shoulders. “I was just looking at this one,” Anna said, pointing to a document that said she needed a surgery that cost $300,000. “Relax Anna, we will find a way to get the money. It was a sum that felt insurmountable, a mountain she had no idea how to climb. “We’ll figure something out,” she said, forcing a smile. “Maybe we can set up a fundraiser or something.” Anna nodded, but Camila could see the doubt in her sister’s eyes. They had tried everything, crowdfunding, charity events, even selling some of their belongings. But the clock was ticking, and time was not on their side. As the evening wore on, Camila tried to distract herself with dinner preparations, but her mind kept drifting back to the bills. She had taken on extra shifts at the diner, but it still wasn’t enough. The thought of losing Anna was unbearable, and the weight of that fear pressed down on her chest. “Cami, can you pass me the salt?” Anna’s voice broke through her thoughts again, and Camila quickly grabbed the salt shaker, her hands trembling slightly. She forced herself to focus on the moment, to be present for her sister. “Here you go,” she said, trying to keep her tone light. “How about we make your favorite dessert tonight? Chocolate cake?” Anna’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. “Really? You know I can’t resist that!” As they baked together, the familiar scents of chocolate and vanilla filled the kitchen, momentarily pushing aside the shadows of worry. They laughed and reminisced about childhood memories, the sound of their laughter echoing off the walls. But even in those moments of joy, the reality of their situation loomed large. While they were enjoying themselves, Anna started crying once more, which caused them to stop talking. She said, "I wish dad was still alive, I miss his presence, hug, even his smile." Camila gave her a tight hug and added, "Dad will be proud in heaven, I know wherever he is he's still praying for us and looking after us." Camila's drab demeanor and slow gait were observed at work the following day. During a break, Jessica, her supervisor at the cleaning business, came up to her. "Hey Camila, how are things going? You seem a little strange today. Since Jessica is known for being a strict boss, Camila was taken aback to see her acting so kindly. With her sister's condition weighing heavily on her mind, Camila hesitated. Simply said, it's Anna's health. She will have to undergo a surgery, which will be very expensive. Jessica's face changed to one of worry. "How much does the operation cost? I'm so sorry to hear that and I apologize for not asking over your sister in a long time." Camila answered, her voice scarcely audible above a low murmur "Three hundred thousand dollars." Jessica's eyes got bigger. That's quite an amount. Have you considered your next course of action? “I don’t know,” Camila admitted, feeling the tears prick at the corners of her eyes. “I just feel so helpless.” Jessica placed a comforting hand on Camila’s shoulder. “If you need anything, just let me know. I’m here for you.” As Camila returned to her tasks, she felt a flicker of gratitude for Jessica’s support. But the reality of their situation loomed large, and she couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom. Later that evening, as Camila lay in bed, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to change. The world outside was quiet, but inside her heart raced with anxiety. She closed her eyes, hoping for a miracle, but all she could see was the mountain of bills and the ticking clock.
