Chapter 1
It was a sunny Friday afternoon in Switzerland. The clear blue sky, misty mountains and the clear ocean, he looked down from the helicopter to admire the wonders of nature.
Adrenaline pumping through his veins, Micheal adjusted his googles, checked his parachute rig one last time to confirm if they are in place, adjusted his harness and his helmet. He rubbed his hands together to gain friction and blew into his palm. The helicopter indicated the altitude of 10,000 feet. It was time to make the drop.
The co-pilot shouted at the top of his voice “we are going to jump from 10,000 ft! You deploy your parachute at 5,000 ft! Remember the air gets thin up here, you might feel a little dizzy.”
“No problem.” Michael nodded his head.
Micheal signaled the pilot and gave him the thumbs up sign. The co-pilot opened the door. The rush of wind was exhilarating. Michael stood at the edge of the door with his back facing the door, waiting to embrace the free fall, and then he fell over.
Mid air, Micheal turned, he was dropping really fast, he blinked a couple of times to get the view below him. He felt on top of the world. The feeling was indescribable, he felt free and the adrenaline rush was so intense
The altimeter beeped signaling the altitude at 5,000 ft. Micheal deployed his parachute, it billowed out and it was smooth surfing from there. The once roaring wind was replaced by windy air which was calm and serene. He took in the picturesque landscape, mountains, greenery and the beautiful blue sky of Switzerland. It was soothing. He deeply inhaled, he never felt more alive.
Gliding through the sky, Micheal felt like a dream, he was floating on air. When he was close to the ground he quickly averted the mountains and targeted an open field. He landed smoothly and jogged to a stop, the parachute lying lifeless on the floor.
He removed his helmet, googles, and his parachute rig. He was bursting with excitement and adrenaline. He had never experienced something like this. He rubbed his face and raked his hands through his hair. His jet black hair wet with perspiration.
Michael Woods standing at 6ft2 tall, was a tall eligible bachelor with broad shoulders, brown eyes and a hard jaw line, and a scar that ran underneath his jaw. Absently he rubbed his scar, it was from a previous daredevil escapades.
He strolled to the entrance of the resort, he was greeted by the manager and offered him a towel and a seat in the waiting room. He texted his location to his driver. It was mid day he ordered brunch. He didn’t realize taking risks could leave one so hungry.
A platter of baguette, scambled eggs, cheese, pickles, ham, bacon, peach fruit, and orange juice was served. He ate with gusto.
His driver arrived shortly, he thanked the manger for his hospitality and left the resort.
He arrived at the hotel he lodged, it was a short drive from the resort. He slotted his key card and entered into the room, taking in the ambience of the room allocated to him, the clear blue sky, the beautiful landscape and the misty view of the mountains. Immediately he shed of his clothes and proceeded to take a hot bath. With the water slicing down his back and chest, he rested his head on the bathroom wall to to reminisce about his jump. It was exhilarating and scary.
He stepped out of the shower and towel dried himself, wrapped the towel on his slender waist. Streaks of water flattened down the hair on his chest to the V of his waist.
He ransacked his box and brought out a pair of sweatpants and a boxer briefs.
He sat on the arm chair facing the window scrolling through his phone. He had several missed calls, Two new messages from his best friend Simon Garnier and his sister Nicole.
Simon’s message read “How did your skydiving go?”
“Text me when you get this message, I took Helen on a spa date.” Micheal scoffed.
Simon his best friend and only friend from childhood. They went to the same college, built a name for themselves, together they carried out daredevil risks, Simon met his wife Helen on one of their escapades. The moment Simon saw her he was smitten like an adolescent boy seeing a girl for the first time. Michael was the best man for his wedding, ever since then Simon had never dropped the topic of marriage, love and family. He didn’t believe in love or marriage.
Micheal quickly replied “I’ll tell you the details in person. Say hello to Helen for me.” He hit the send button.
He didn’t bother to open his sisters message he dialed her number. It rang once, on the second ring she took the call. She answered groggily “Dad is pissed, he’s threatening fire and ice if you don’t return today” she didn’t bother for pleasantries.
“ I have a flight to catch this evening, you’ll see me shortly this evening.” He replied tartly. With that he ended the call.
He rubbed his finger tips on his eye, and bent his head to rest on the chair, and slowly exhaled.
At 31 his father was trying to control him, despite being the CEO of JWOODS Industriies a conglomerate company with several branches throughout the pacific, and his father was currently the Chairman of the board of directors.
The company was founded by his great grand father, a multi million generational company. Despite having a degree in business, his father still treats him like a teenager. He always tried to box him in a corner with the topic of grandchildren and marriage.
He took the sudden trip to Switzerland, because skydiving has been on his bucket list, and he needed to get away from the pressure of work. He boarded the next available flight two days ago without prior notice to his father or anyone else. He needed to be free from the brooding look he received each day at work.
He had an 8hour long flight to catch to New York. He quickly arranged his bags, and called his driver to take him to the airport.
He passed through customs and security, he was glad people didn’t recognize him here, but how could they when he was dressed in polo cap, sunglasses and Lacoste t-shirt and tailored pants and brogue shoes.
On board the Swiss airlines, first class cabin, his phone chimed, he tapped on the notification, It was a text from his mum.
“Family dinner by weekend, be there! There’s something your father wants to discuss with you.”
Micheal groaned, “not again.” He loved his mum, but she loved her husband more.
He quickly texted Simon “pick me up at JFK at 5.”
