Chapter 4: Your Husband
On the other side, Eudora Cook was swamped with work at the company. When she finally looked up, her team leader, Debby Charley, rushed over and asked, "Eudora, why are you the only one here? Where's Phoebe? She hasn't come in yet."
"What? Phoebe isn't here?"
Eudora Cook asked in confusion. It had been so busy in the morning that she hadn't even noticed Phoebe Hamlet's absence.
"Yeah! It's already this late, and she still hasn't shown up! And she didn't ask for leave. Do you think something happened to her?"
Hearing Debby Charley's words, Eudora Cook quickly pulled out her phone, worried, and prepared to call Phoebe Hamlet. However, after several attempts, there was no answer. It was then that she noticed an unread message from an unknown number.
Phoebe, wait for me at home. —158xxxxxxx1.
After reading the message, Eudora Cook replied in surprise.
—Who are you?
After a long while, there was no reply. Eudora Cook couldn't help but wonder who had sent the message and why they called her "Phoebe." Could it be a mistake?
Throughout the afternoon, the sender did not respond. Just as Eudora Cook was about to put the matter aside, her phone beeped again.
Your fiancé. —158xxxxxxx1.
Fiancé?!
Seeing the reply, Eudora Cook was bewildered. Phoebe has a fiancé, and I didn't know? Could it be someone from Phoebe's family?!
So, Eudora Cook kindly replied.
"Hello, you've sent the message to the wrong person. I'm not Phoebe; I'm her best friend. Phoebe's phone number is 139xxxxxxxx8, which is different from mine by the last digit."
She and Phoebe Hamlet had gotten their campus cards together in school, so their phone numbers were consecutive, differing only in the last digit. Phoebe Hamlet's number ended in "8," while hers ended in "9."
When Theodore Harrington received Eudora Cook's message, he was momentarily stunned. He instinctively checked the message content that his assistant, Jack, had sent him this morning. The number was indeed "139xxxxxxx9"!
Last night, he had used the girl's phone to call Jack, and Jack's phone had displayed the caller's number. Could it be that Jack had entered the wrong last digit?
At this moment, "139xxxxxxx9" sent another message.
"If you can contact Phoebe, please tell her to call me back. She's not answering her phone, and she didn't come to work. I'm very worried."
"I had someone pick her up."
Theodore Harrington replied. The butler said he had picked her up and arranged for her to stay at the villa in the eastern suburbs of L City.
Before Eudora Cook could read the message, Phoebe Hamlet called her.
Eudora Cook answered the call, concerned. "Phoebe, why didn't you come to work? Are you feeling unwell?"
Phoebe Hamlet replied coldly, "I'm fine. Can you resign for me? I don't want to work anymore!"
"Phoebe, what happened?" Eudora Cook felt tense hearing Phoebe Hamlet's icy tone.
Phoebe Hamlet continued in the same cold manner, "I'm fine! I've already gone home! By the way, let's not contact each other anymore. Don't mention me to anyone, and don't say you know me. In short, Eudora, we're done!"
"Done? Wait, Phoebe, what's going on?" Eudora Cook was completely confused, not understanding what could have happened between them to make Phoebe Hamlet suddenly want to end their friendship.
*Beep*
Phoebe Hamlet hung up without further explanation.
Eudora Cook held her phone, staring at the "Call Ended" screen, utterly baffled.
What's wrong with Phoebe?
Just then, team leader Debby Charley came over again and asked, "Eudora, will Phoebe come to work tomorrow?"
"I think she won't be coming back ever again," Eudora Cook shrugged slightly.
Debby Charley turned and left, looking disgruntled.
Eudora Cook then opened the message she had just received.
She was picked up by my people. —158xxxxxxx1.
It seemed that Phoebe Hamlet had really gone home! Could she have secretly gotten married?
Even with a fiancé!
Eudora Cook found the idea absurd. Was her best friend ending their friendship because of marriage? Something felt off.
After a long day, Eudora Cook returned to her rented apartment. She saw that Phoebe Hamlet's room door was open. Inside, all her things were still there, but Phoebe Hamlet was nowhere to be found.
"Phoebe? " Eudora Cook called out, but there was no response. She then called Phoebe Hamlet again.
The phone rang for a long time before Phoebe Hamlet finally answered.
"Phoebe, where have you been all day?" Eudora Cook asked, still very worried. After a busy day, she had almost forgotten about the morning's breakup.
Phoebe Hamlet, however, responded irritably, "Didn't I already explain everything to you? Why are you calling again?"
