Chapter 9

“Every eye on me felt like a blade, every whisper a lash… yet my spirit refused to shatter.” The morning air was thick with the scent of sweat and fear. I knelt in the center of the courtyard, wrists sore and bruised, head bowed as Kael circled me like a predator. Today, he had chosen to demonstrate my weakness in front of the entire pack—a public reminder of my place. “Look at her,” he sneered loudly, voice carrying across the stone yard. “Our precious little Gamma, trembling like a frightened pup. Is this what you call obedience?” The other Gammas murmured, some smirking, some hiding their shame. I forced myself to stay kneeling, every muscle aching, every bruise screaming. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, muscles coiling, instincts whispering that I could lash out, strike, fight. But I couldn’t—not yet. Survival demanded patience. Valen appeared at the edge of the courtyard, as silent and commanding as ever. Even across the distance, I felt his gaze press down on me, sharp, golden, predatory. My heart stuttered at the recognition, a dangerous thrill rising in my chest. My wolf growled low, responding to him, to the heat, to the forbidden pull that neither of us could deny. Kael leaned close, sneering. “Watch closely, little sister. This is your life. Humiliation is your inheritance.” A shove to my back made me stumble forward slightly, and a wave of hot, biting anger surged through me. My wolf flared, claws itching to tear, teeth itching to snap—but I clenched my fists, forcing the growl back down. Control. Patience. Endurance. Valen’s gaze never left me, and I could feel it teasing, daring, claiming a part of me I had long tried to bury. Even in fear, even under the humiliation, I felt it—the spark between us. The ember of something dangerous and powerful that had been growing inside me since the first time I sensed him. “Isolde!” Kael barked, shoving me down so my forehead hit the stone. “Do you call this strength? You are nothing!” Pain exploded across my skin, hot and sharp. My wolf whimpered low in my chest, muscles coiling, instincts screaming to fight. For a heartbeat, I felt it—pure, wild, dangerous. I could have struck him, could have sent every Gamma scrambling in shock—but I did not. I endured. Valen’s golden eyes flared, sharp and intense, as if he felt every pulse of my wolf, every breath of defiance. His presence was intoxicating, maddening, and terrifying. And yet… it was also a promise. A promise that I was seen. That I was marked. That I was no longer just Kael’s punching bag or the pack’s shadow. Kael laughed, cruel and sharp. “Pathetic! You will never rise above your place. Remember that!” I lowered my gaze, hiding the fire burning behind my eyes. My wolf calmed slightly, though the ember of rebellion remained, coiled and ready. One day, that ember would become a blaze. One day, I would no longer kneel. And when that day came… they would all see that I was more than a Gamma, more than a shadow, more than the pack’s toy. Until that day… I endured.
