Chapter 10

590 Words
“For the first time, I felt my power, my wolf, and myself… and it terrified them all.” The courtyard was empty, bathed in the pale light of dawn. I knelt on the cold stone floor, rubbing at the bruises that still throbbed across my arms. Every movement was careful, deliberate; every breath a quiet defiance against the life I had been forced to endure. Kael was absent this morning, likely watching from the shadows, waiting for a misstep. I sensed his presence anyway, a dark weight lingering, threatening. My wolf stirred, restless and aware, sensing the tension in the air. And then… I felt it. A pulse of energy, raw and unbridled, coiling in my chest. My instincts whispered, sharp and urgent, and I allowed myself to focus. For the first time, I let the wolf guide me, subtle movements that no one would notice but that made my body stronger, sharper, faster. My breath steadied, my muscles tensed with control rather than fear. I exhaled slowly, feeling the surge of power settle. It was intoxicating, a fire I had never dared to acknowledge. My wolf hummed in agreement, pleased at the taste of freedom, of potential. A shadow moved at the edge of my awareness. Valen. I sensed him before I saw him, a predator lurking silently, watching. His gaze was intense, golden eyes glinting with curiosity and… something darker. Desire? Obsession? It made my stomach twist painfully, my pulse quicken. “You’re stronger than you know,” he murmured, voice low, almost a whisper, meant only for me. “Do you feel it? The wolf… the power… the bond?” I clenched my fists, forcing my mind to focus. My wolf pulsed beneath my skin, acknowledging him, responding to him, yet obedient to my will. The connection was subtle, dangerous, undeniable. Before I could respond, a cold laugh echoed from the shadows. Kael had returned, smirking, his eyes sharp with suspicion. “Playing with forces you don’t understand, little sister?” he taunted. I forced myself to kneel lower, hiding the heat of the power that surged within me. But Kael noticed the subtle shift—the confidence, the poise, the spark of something more. His smirk faltered for the first time in days. Valen stepped closer, golden eyes never leaving mine, and I felt the pull again—the dangerous, forbidden pull that had been growing between us since our first encounter. Every instinct screamed that this was a moment of peril, yet my wolf and I thrummed with awareness, ready, alive. “You will learn control,” Valen said softly, voice threading between warning and promise. “Harness it, or it will consume you.” I nodded, knowing I understood more than the words implied. The wolf, the power, the ember of defiance—they were mine to wield. Kael could threaten me, humiliate me, and torment me, but this… this was untouchable. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Careful,” he warned. “The Alpha sees more than you think.” Valen’s smile was thin, predatory, private, as he turned to leave. “And sometimes,” he whispered, voice meant only for my ears, “the wolf sees more than the Alpha ever could.” As the shadows swallowed him, I felt the fire settle deeper within me. My wolf hummed, satisfied, strong. For the first time, I tasted power, control, and a dangerous kind of freedom. One day, I would not only endure. One day, I would rise. And until that day… I endured.
