Chapter 7

“Every breath, every heartbeat reminded me that I was more than they believed… even if I dared not show it.” The morning fog hung low over the courtyard, curling around the stone walls like tendrils of smoke. I crouched at the edge, scrubbing the floor, wrists raw, muscles screaming with exhaustion. Kael stood nearby, watching, his presence like a shadow pressing down on me. “You’re slow today, little sister,” he said, voice sharp. “Afraid the Alpha will notice your weakness?” I swallowed hard, forcing my wolf to lie dormant beneath my skin. But something new stirred in me—a flicker of control, a sense of awareness that my instincts could be harnessed rather than feared. A subtle pulse of power at the edges of my consciousness, like the first ember of a fire. Kael noticed it too. His smirk faltered for the briefest instant. “You feel it, don’t you?” he hissed under his breath, though I wasn’t sure if he meant fear or something else. “Something shifting…” I ignored him, lowering my gaze, focusing on the stone beneath my fingers. My wolf stirred, and this time, instead of growling or lashing out, it responded to my will. My body moved faster, more fluidly, dodging the scrape of a broom that Kael deliberately swung at me to provoke me. A flicker of satisfaction warmed me. For the first time, I felt… capable. From the shadows, I sensed him—Valen. His presence was faint but unmistakable, like the pull of the sun on a frozen lake. Even across the yard, my wolf twitched, muscles coiling at his scent. I forced my body to kneel lower, hiding the thrill that surged inside me. Valen’s gaze lingered, and I felt the weight of it pressing against my chest. There was something dangerous there, something intense, something that made my skin prickle and my heart race. I had learned long ago that danger and desire often wore the same face in the Alpha’s world. Kael leaned closer, voice venomous. “You’re playing with fire, little sister. Don’t think you can control it.” I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms. My wolf hummed low in agreement, a warning and a promise. Control was a weapon. Defiance was a spark. And both were mine to wield, even if only in secret. A sudden shout from the outer gates drew my attention. One of the elder Gammas had stumbled during a training task, and Valen’s glance swept over him like a predator. My heart tightened. Even now, he could crush anyone at will—and yet he seemed… fascinated with me. Kael noticed my attention drifting and shoved me roughly. “Focus on your place! Remember who you are!” I bowed, swallowing the flicker of fire inside me, but the ember of rebellion remained. My wolf pulsed beneath my skin, quiet but insistent, whispering that I could harness this, that I could survive, that I could rise. Valen’s eyes found mine again, and I flinched slightly at the intensity, a strange mix of fear and longing tightening my chest. There was a silent message in that gaze—power, desire, recognition. And I knew, even if I didn’t yet understand it, that he saw something no one else did. Kael grunted in frustration, sensing the invisible connection I could not speak of. “You’re… different today,” he muttered, a shadow of jealousy in his voice. I said nothing. I only lowered my gaze, letting my wolf simmer beneath my skin, letting the ember grow quietly. One day, I would not kneel. One day, I would not fear. And until that day… I endured.
