As soon as she stepped into the house, Rachel and Rebecca seemed to surround her. They led her away from Derek. And for some reason she didn’t understand she was reluctant to let him go too far away. She wasn’t in the mood to question it. For now, knowing he was in the next room was enough. “Are you all right, Mama?” Rachel asked as they pulled her toward the sofa. “I’m tired, but fine.” “It was Dad, right?” Rebecca’s eyes narrowed. “Yes, it was your father.” Laurelynn heard the exhaustion in her own voice. “Derek said you didn’t fight, why not?” Rebecca tilted her head and watched her as if she knew there was more to the story. Laurelynn filled them in on what had happened, why she hadn’t fought going with Neil and ended with how grateful she was that people had come to rescue her.
