Vance called at seven in the morning.
Mia was already at the kitchen table with coffee. She answered before the second ring.
"The man in the photograph," Vance said, "is William Cross. Managing director of a private investment consortium based in New York called the Whitmore Group." She paused. "He was never named in the Ashby investigation. He was never charged. He was never formally linked to the Meridian Foundation — every connection between the Whitmore Group and Meridian is structured through four intermediary entities specifically designed to create distance."
"He funded Ashby," Mia said.
"The Whitmore Group is the single largest LP in three of the vehicles Meridian used to distribute the student data revenues,"
