It had been a month of sundays since that horrendous day. I had moved to Pittsburgh and kept running errands for my living. I used to wonder, why the cops have not been able to arrest me despite murdering a man infront of a dozen of people. A busy schedule diverted my mind from those guilty thoughts and I was thankful enough for that.
Alarm went off as rays of sunlight sneaked into my room through the gap between curtains. I let a big yawn out and rubbed my eyes. Nervousness was in command as i got ready for my job interview at a respectable fabric company.
'Welcome mate, you may wait here until the interview panel is ready'. Receptionist urged.
'Yeah sure'. I replied.
As i waited in the lobby, two gentlemen in black suits entered through the main door and muttered across me. Meanwhile, i was called in for the interview which went smooth and confident. I was hopeful for the vacant position as it matched my traits and skills. I walked out of the office and waited for my uber to arrive. Meanwhile, the two gentlemen came out too and stood behind me. I could hear them talking about arrival of a new boss at that office. I kept thinking of the new boss, how would he react to me being a newbie and what if he learns about my dirty past.
Fast forward to the next day, i arrived at the office at time and walked in wearing my brand new navy blue suit with red tie. Receptionist greeted me and settled me in my cabin. Bunch of files awaited me on my wide desk, i got busy in thoroughly reading those files and suddenly the idea of meeting with the new boss crossed my mind. I got up and headed towards the cabin of my boss. He was not present in his cabin so i asked the receptionist about his arrival.
'He will be here soon, it's his first day too just like you' she replied with a smile.
I came back and continued my work in my cabin peacefully until i heard people greeting and welcoming someone out in the corridor. I snapped out of my comfy chair and rushed outside to meet him, but he had already gone into his cabin. I followed him and opened the door after knocking it formally.
'May i come in Mr Lincoln? I asked anxiously.
'Sure, please get yourself seated'. He replied.
He was a tall handsome chunk with sharp french beard. His physique fuelled his beauty even more. He seemed to be a good person, physically and spiritually.
'It's my first day here, so is your sir' i said.
'Oh, that may be a good start to a long and strong bond' he replied with a broad smile.
As time passed by, our employee and employer bond transformed into friendship which lead us to hang out even after the working hours. I always feared the day when he will learn about my disgusting past. I was certain if he comes to know somehow, it would most probably effect our friendship. Having a friend like him after such a long time, it felt really good and i would never risk losing someone geniune as him.
A year went on, we were as usual chilling at a cafe near our office when he got a phone call, it was his old friend who wanted to meet him urgently. This phone call turned out to be a deja vu for me. He excused me and went out of the cafe to proceed with the call. After a few minutes he ran in and asked me to follow his lead. I tried to calm him down as he was overwhelmed of excitement and joy.
'Mr lincoln, what's wrong where are we going?' I asked out of curiosity.
'My childhood friend is here, what a surprise it is'. He replied excitingly.
Both of us reached the city airport and he asked me to wait in the car while he went in to recieve his friend. After waiting anxiously for half an hour i spotted Mr. Lincoln walking out of the terminal, along with him walked a man of a height almost equal to Mr Lincoln. The man had a long bandholz beard and wore shinny sunglasses.
I want seated in the front of the car and that man sat behind me while Mr Lincoln drove the car back to the cafe.
'Meet Mr John Carter, my childhood bestie'. Said Mr Lincoln
My mind clicked upon hearing the name of john, there are millions of people named john what are the odds of him being the john i know, i said to myself. Out of curiosity i even tried to see his face properly in the rearview mirror but he looked unfamiliar. To get to know him a little better, i asked him about his occupation without turning my face towards him. After a introductory conversation i concluded he wasn't the john i knew. Moreover, Mr Lincoln told his name as John Carter whereas the John i knew was Johnson Charles.
We got to the cafe and sat down in a corner. Mr Lincoln had ordered 3 mojitos to start with a 'memorable to be' conversation.
I noticed that Mr John didn't take off his glasses which made me unable to recognize him by his sharp eyebrows and eyecolour. Johnson Charles wasn't fond of beards upto my knowledge but he was unpredictable. He didn't react unusual when he saw my face which made sure that he wasn't the man i was thinking.
'Excuse me, i will be back in a snap, you may continue your conversation' Mr Lincoln said and walked in the restroom.
'I will be back too, excuse me' Mr John said and followed Mr Lincoln.
My heartbeat accelerated as he followed Mr Lincoln suspiciously.
'Is it a conspiracy' i asked myself.
Eventually, i decided to have a look in the restroom as it had been 5 minutes eversince they both got in. I creeped in and heard them arguing so i hid behind the sink counter.
'You have a friend like him? He is a criminal, Lincoln'. Mr John shouted angrily.
'Shut your mouth John, i was most probably your fault because you have temper issues. Mr Lincoln replied all flared up.
'If you are to advocate for him then go on'. John shouted back.
'You were... You were with your enemy the whole time, why didn't you just kill him already'. Mr Lincoln asked while grunting.
I sneaked my head out and saw John grabbing Mr Lincoln by the neck and pointing a knife at him. Mr Lincoln was pushed against the wall and was helpless. I pulled out my phone and started to record the scene just in case. After arguing for some time John pearced the knife through the neck of Mr Lincoln. I could hear the blood dripping in the gutters. Meanwhile, John was sitting beside him in the puddles of blood, mourning the death of his brother like friend.
It sent shiver down my spine to see Mr Lincoln dying there on the floor. I felt guilty as hell, i got him killed. Had i accumulated some courage, i could have saved my friend from that cereal killer John. I had to snap out of it, i had the recording and i was one who had to ensure justice for my friend. I had two options, to make a run for my safety or to confront John face to face. I was in a state of shock and agony and had no energy left to handle the rage of him. Hence, i made up my mind to make a run.
I got up quietly and tried to sneak out but luck had other plans. I hit my funny bone on the pillar behind me and accidently screamed out of pain. Upon screaming John turned his face towards me and spotted me sneaking out.
'Stop you rascal, you are the reason for the death of Lincoln'. He shouted steamingly.
My only objective at that time was to protect the recording and get to a safe haven. Clouds begin to build up in the sky and it started to drizzle. It was once again a deja vu for me. I paced through the streets as John followed me along. It was about to be dark and i had to get to my apartment as soon as i could. John's leg looked injured from the last time action had commenced which made him slower than me. Jumping over the trash cans and running through the alleys, i finally made to my apartment. Before anything else, i transferred the recording to my USB because evidence was the key.
